Faceoff is slated for noon (ET) inside the Carrier Dome. The Fighting Irish currently are in first place in the league. The Fighting Irish are coming of a 13-7 win at Ohio State on Tuesday. THE SYRACUSE SERIES Saturday will be the ninth meeting all-time between Notre Dame and Syracuse. The Orange hold a 7-1 advantage in the series. Syracuse topped Notre Dame twice last season. The Orange captured a 10-4 decision at the Konica Minolta Big City Classic at MetLife Stadium and then the Orange bested the Irish 9-3 in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Tournament at Villanova. The Fighting Irish are 0-2 all-time at Syracuse. Notre Dame s last trip to the Carrier Dome was during the 2011 season and the Irish fell The program s only other venture to Syracuse came in 2004 and the Irish dropped a decision. SCOUTING SYRACUSE Syracuse is 4-3 overall and 0-3 in the ACC. The Orange have faced Maryland (L, 16-8), Virginia (L, 17-12) and Duke (L, 21-7) in league play. The Orange are averaging 12.7 goals per game, while allowing 13.6 per contest. Dylan Donahue (R-So./A) has teamhigh totals in goals (18) and points (27). Kevin Rice (Jr./A) has a team-best 15 assists. Dominic Lamolinara (Sr.) has started all seven games in goal and has a goals-against average and a.492 save percentage. Last season, Syracuse went 16-4 (5-1 BIG EAST) and fell to Duke, 16-10, in the national title game. The Orange won the 2013 BIG EAST Tournament. Head coach John Desko is in his 16th season at the helm of the Syracuse program. KAVANAGH S SEVEN GOALS TIES PROGRAM RECORD Sophomore attackman Matt Kavanagh tied a Notre Dame record with seven goals in Tuesday s 13-7 win at Ohio State. The seven goals matched the program record held by Randy Colley (1993 vs. New Hampshire) and Ryan Hoff (2007 vs. Drexel). Kavanagh also had an assist in the game and his eight points were one shy of tying the program standard. SUDDEN SPURTS After not scoring a goal in the first quarter versus Ohio State, Notre Dame rattled off five straight scores in a span of 5:33 midway through the second period. The Irish later scored three consecutive goals in 1:49 to break open a 5-5 tie. Notre Dame netted five straight goals in a span of 2:20 to claim an 8-2 lead by the 6:05 mark of the second quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Fighting Irish put the game away with four consecutive tallies in a span of 1:11 to take a 15-7 lead. PHENOMENAL FACEOFFS Notre Dame boasts the nation s top faceoff unit with a.685 ( ) winning percentage. Individually, senior Liam O Connor is second nationally with a.685 mark (89-130). O Connor also has netted a goal in each of the last two games. Junior Nick Ossello is 12-for-16 (.750) and freshman P.J. Finley is 1-for-3. EXTRA-MAN EFFICIENCY Notre Dame has the country s second-best man-up offense percentage (.609). The Fighting Irish have scored on 14 of their 23 man-up opportunities this season. Senior attackman John Scioscia and freshman midfielder Sergio Perkovic lead the Irish with five man-up goals each. The Irish also notched two man-down goals against Ohio State as Matt Kavanagh and Liam O Connor scored seven seconds apart late in the fourth quarter. KAVANAGH KEEPS COMPILING BIG NUMBERS After leading the Irish in goals (32) and assists (16) last season, sophomore attackman Matt Kavanagh has notched team-bests in goals (20) and assists (11) through the first six games of this season. Kavanagh matched a school record with seven goals in Tuesday s win at Ohio State. He has scored at least three goals in five of the team s six games this season. Kavanagh tallied four goals and two assists against Virginia on March 16. Kavanagh has scored two or more goals in 16 of his 22 career games with the Irish. He has netted three or more goals on nine occasions. IRISH DOUBLE UP CAVALIERS A seven-goal second quarter and a nine-goal fourth quarter put Notre Dame well on its way to an 18-9 victory over Virginia on March 16 inside the Loftus Sports Center. Notre Dame used 11 different goal scorers in the win and the offense was spearheaded by a four-goal, two-assist effort from sophomore attackman Matt Kavanagh, while junior midfielder Nick Ossello chipped in with his first career hat trick. Not only did senior Liam O Connor go 19-for-24 in faceoffs, he tallied a goal and an assist. QUITE A QUARTER Notre Dame s nine-goal fourth quarter against Virginia marked the most goals for the Irish in a single quarter since they netted 11 in the second period versus Bellarmine on March 29, 2008 (a 19-7 Notre Dame victory). SPREADING THE WEALTH Nineteen different Fighting Irish players have scored a goal this season. Notre Dame is averaging 15.3 goals per game in its four wins. The Irish are averaging 9.5 goal scorers per game in those four victories. OSSELLO JOINS HAT TRICK CLUB Junior midfielder Nick Ossello became the fourth different Fighting Irish player to notch a hat trick this season when he deposited a career-high three goals against Virginia. Sophomore attackman Matt Kavanagh has a team-best five hat tricks, including a seven-goal output against Ohio State and a four-goal effort versus Virginia. O Hara helped the Fighting Irish defense hold Virginia, which entered the contest averaging nearly 14 goals per game, to a season-low nine goals and only 26 shots. O Hara caused three turnovers and picked up four ground balls, while helping to limit Virginia s James Pannell, who entered the contest with 24 goals in seven games, without a point. After allowing the first goal of the game, the Irish defense surrendered just one score in a span of 26:23 en route to taking an 8-2 lead. Notre Dame also limited Virginia to just one goal in five man-up opportunities. O Hara is the first Fighting Irish player to cop an ACC player-of-the-week accolade for men s lacrosse. A DOMINATING DEFENSE Notre Dame is the only NCAA Division I team to finish in the top 10 nationally in scoring defense in each of the last seven seasons. Since the beginning of the 2007 season (a span of 117 games), the Irish defense has limited opponents to seven goals or fewer 73 times. Notre Dame has held foes to four goals or fewer 17 times during that stretch. The Irish have allowed 10 or more goals just eight times in the last 56 games. The Irish are 2-0 versus top- 10 foes this season. Including the win over the Cavaliers, Notre Dame topped No. 2 North Carolina, GOING BACK TO CALI The showdown with Denver on March 8 in Costa Mesa, Calif. was Notre Dame s third regular-season appearance in Southern California and the first since 2005 when the Irish captured a 9-7 victory over North Carolina at The Home Depot Center in Carson. The Fighting Irish defeated Air Force, 12-11, in San Diego during the 1990 campaign. Notre Dame also ventured to the Golden State in 2010 to face Johns Hopkins in the San Francisco Fall Classic. SOLID SLATE Notre Dame is ranked seventh in the latest United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) poll. Eighth Fighting Irish opponents are ranked in the poll, including six in the top 10. Notre Dame and the other five members of the ACC all can be found in the first 10 spots of the rankings. Duke, Maryland and North Carolina are ranked three through five, respectively, while Virginia is No. 8 and Syracuse is No. 10. Notre Dame s non-conference ledger features three ranked foes - No. 6 Denver, No. 17 Penn State and No. 20 Army. FIGHTING IRISH ENTER THE ACC Notre Dame is in its first season of Atlantic Coast Conference play. The Fighting Irish have defeated every other ACC member at least once in the last four seasons and the Irish have a 10-8 record against its ACC counterparts (including Syracuse) since the beginning of the 2010 campaign. The ACC is Notre Dame s third different league in the last six seasons. The Irish left the Great Western Lacrosse League following the 2009 campaign to join the BIG EAST. IRISH RETURN OFFENSE Notre Dame returned 111 of its 159 goals (.698) from last season. The Fighting Irish welcomed back four of their top five goal scorers from the 2013 campaign (Matt Kavanagh 32, Conor Doyle 20, Jim Marlatt 20, John Scioscia 14). The Fighting Irish finished the 2013 regular season with the nation s top RPI and earned a program-best No. 2 seed for the NCAA Championship before advancing to the NCAA quarterfinals for the fourth straight season. The Irish fell to Duke, 12-11, in the quarterfinals. Attackman Matt Kavanagh led the Irish in goals (32) and assists (16). The 32 goals established a program record for a freshman. Jim Marlatt was the leading midfielder scorer with 20 goals to go along with 12 assists. The Fighting Irish finished the 2013 season ranked 10th nationally in scoring defense with an 8.31 goals-against average. Notre Dame returned two starting close defensemen in seniors Brian Buglione and Stephen O Hara. HOME SWEET HOME Notre Dame is 46-7 (.868) at home since the beginning of the 2006 season. IRISH EXPOSURE Nearly every Notre Dame game this season can be seen on TV or the Internet. The Fighting Irish will have five contests on ESPNU (vs. Virginia, at Syracuse, vs. Duke, vs. Maryland, vs. Army), one game on ESPN3 (at North Carolina) and the season opener at Jacksonville aired on the NBC Sports Network. WatchND.tv streamed the Penn State contest and will also provide a free broadcast for the Robert Morris game on April 12. The Lacrosse Network covered the Denver tilt and Notre Dame s showdown at Ohio State on Tuesday aired on Fox College Sports. A QUARTET OF PRESEASON ALL-AMERICANS Four Fighting Irish players received preseason All-America honors from Inside Lacrosse. Stephen O Hara (Sr./D) was a first-team pick, while Jim Marlatt (Sr./M) appeared on the second team and Matt Kavanagh (So./A) was a third-team selection. Matt Landis (So./D) garnered honorable mention accolades. MARLATT & O HARA TO CAPTAIN THE IRISH Seniors Jim Marlatt (M) and Stephen O Hara (D) will serve as team captains for the Fighting Irish in Both are first-time captains. O HARA PICKED IN MLL DRAFT Senior defenseman Stephen O Hara was selected by the Ohio Machine with the first pick of the sixth round (41st overall) of January s 2014 Major League Lacrosse (MLL) Draft. O Hara has started every game over the last three seasons in Notre Dame s close defense, which has been one of the best in the nation over that time. The Fighting Irish allowed just 8.31 goals per game last season. That mark ranked 10th nationally and the Irish were first in 2012 after notching a 6.31 goals-against average. O Hara, a Fighting Irish team captain, was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team last season. DOUBLE DOYLE Junior attackman Conor Doyle is joined by his older brother Jack Doyle on this season s roster. Jack, a midfielder, graduated from Harvard and was on the Crimson squad for four seasons. He combined to play in 27 games during his freshman and sophomore seasons, but did not play last two years due to injury. He tallied 14 goals and eight assists at Harvard. The duo had a strong showing against Virginia as Conor posted one goal and a careerhigh three assists, while Jack registered a goal and an assist. ELITE COMPANY Notre Dame and Maryland are the only two programs to earn a spot in the NCAA Championship field in each of the last eight seasons. Notre Dame and Duke are the only two schools to advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship in each of the last four seasons.
