1 CVI Division Meeting, June 13, 2015 Location: Best Western Barclay Hotel, Port Alberni Number Attending: 45 11:00 HRS: Social Hour 12 Noon: Meeting called to order by Past President/Governor Gary FORBES in the absence of current president Bill HEARTY and wife Joan who are visiting family following their attendance at the Quebec AGM. Larry STRIGHT will act as recording secretary for this meeting. The meeting opened with the singing of "O' Canada" lead by Tony ANTONIUK. Motion to approve agenda by Larry JOHANNES. Seconded by Josh PURNEY. Introduction of Guests: Reg # 37168, Sgt. Cheryl ARMSTRONG of Nanaimo Detachment introduced by her father Hap ARMSTRONG. Reg # / Insp. Mac RICHARDS, OIC Port Alberni introduced by Josh PURNEY. Reg # Barry McGILL introduced by Tony ANTONIUK.(Barry served ). Carla RUD from Langley, BC introduced by friend Dave ALDERSON 1

2 Induction of New Members/Service Bars: With lunch being slightly delayed the order of business continued with Past president Gary attending to the following: Reg # 25235, Lawrence DASHWOOD-JONES of Campbell River inducted. Lawrence's service dates were Reg # Steve McKENNA of Royston who served for 25 years was welcomed and inducted. Although Steve has been a member of CVI for 10 years, this was his first attendance meeting. Steve is also our CVI Newsletter Editor. Reg # / Hap ARMSTRONG was presented with his 20 year Veterans Service Bar. Remembrance Blessing: In the absence of our Chaplain, Josh PURNEY called for a moment of silence in memory of those no longer with us. He gave special tribute to Cst. Daniel WOODALL, age 35 of Edmonton City Police who was shot and killed in the line of duty on June 8. Following grace the meeting was adjourned to enjoy the full buffet of chicken cordon bleu and numerous low calorie desserts! Adjourned for lunch 12:10 PM - 1:00 PM Guest Speaker: Immediately following lunch and thanking the catering staff; Governor Josh PURNEY introduced our guest speaker, Insp. M.B. (Mac) RICHARDS, Reg #41662 / who following 2

3 his commission was transferred as OIC Port Alberni Detachment in October Mac is originally from Coquitlam where he joined the Force. Following training he received postings in "F", "K" and "E" Divisions having served in Broadview, Lloydminster, Pine House Lake, Drayton Valley, Morinville and Port Alberni. Having 25 years service, he comes with a well-rounded background experience of detachment, highway patrol and plain clothes section duties. Mac gave an informative and lighthearted talk of how things have changed over the years. In particular how much equipment has now been added to members duty belts and police vehicles. Computers and electronic equipment is the norm. Very little now is committed to hand written notes. But in the end the RCMP core service is still the same "Stop/Prevent Crime". Josh PURNEY and Gary FORBES thanked Insp. RICHARDS and presented him with a small gift as a thank you from our Division. General Business: Minutes of Previous Meeting: Motion to adopt by Steve VATAMINIUK. Seconded by Hap ARMSTRONG. Approved Secretary Chester KARY: Absent. No Report Treasurer David SHEWCHUK: Absent. No Report Quarter Master Norm BREAULT: Various items on hand for sale. A few nametags have not yet been picked up by the members. Membership Mike CLEGG: Absent. No new applications brought forward. 3

4 Database Administrator Russ HOWARD: Absent. No Report Benefits/Graves/HG Coordinator Laurie JAMONT: Absent. No Report Newsletter Editor Steve McKENNA: Advises all is going well. Steve was officially inducted into the Association today. Welcome Steve! New Business: None Director Reports: Parksville/Qualicum (Jack ROY): In the absence of Jack, Tony ANTONIUK updated the membership. He advised that Jack ROY has seen a hip specialist but is not at hip replacement stage - yet. The doctor feels his lumbar deterioration is causing increased pain and that physio may help the condition. Dan CREALLY had a left hip replacement at UBC hospital in early June and is doing well. David JOHNS is absent today, as he will be travelling to Victoria on Sunday for cardiac angiogram/angioplasty/stents. Duncan (Brent BLANCHARD): Bill DELLEBURR advises Brent has "gone fishing"! All is well and they all see each other at coffee meetings. Courtenay/Comox (Mary KOSTASHUK) - No report. No one from Courtenay/Comox at today s meeting. 4

5 Campbell River (Rosaire BERNARD) Bob BELTER acted as today s spokesman. He advised that Barney & Darlene are in Vancouver on Legion business. Barney is the current President of the Royal Canadian Legion - Campbell River Branch. Fishing is good in Campbell River! No health issues to report. Nanaimo (Irwin AXNESS). No medical issues that he is aware of. All is well. Port Alberni (Steve VATAMANIUCK). Steve advises that Derek DREW is at Ty Watson House, Port Alberni in palliative care and would appreciate visitors. Marg BROUGHTON is presently in the Westhaven Care Home, Port Alberni. Steve additionally thanked his wife Judy and Marg PIERCE for assisting him in organizing today s meeting. BIRTHDAYS IN JUNE Des CUNNIN, Del COLLIN, Len JERRITT, John BECKETT, Peter ATTRELL. Special Report - Travel to Europe Reg #24332 Dave ALDERSON provided a quick overview of his recent 14-day trip to Europe departing April 17th, Dave was privileged to travel with the Calgary Highland Regiment to England, France, Holland and Belgium for Liberation of Holland 5

6 ceremonies. (Dave's bother- in- law serves with the Regiment) The Regiment visited many cemeteries including Vimy Ridge Memorial. In anticipation of the trip, Dave had just acquired his RCMP Veterans red blazer, wedge cap etc in time for the departure, which he wore with great pride. While in London, he attended a private ceremony with the Regiment where Her Majesty The Queen was in attendance. Much to his pleasure he was introduced to and shook hands with The Queen whom he describes as very charming. At another function held at Canada House, he met and chatted with HRH Princess Alexandra. Dave advises he was very honored and proud to have been able to represent the RCMP Vets. Thank You! Past President Gary thanked all for attending. In addition a special thank you to Area Director/Governor Steve VATAMANIUK, his wife Judy along with Marg PIERCE for organizing todays event. Also thanks to all who brought along "door prizes!
