1 The majority of those reading this article probably know that 4-H is America s largest youth organization. 4-H reaches nearly six million young people across the country through its links to Cooperative Extension. Cooperative Extension is a community of more than 100 land grant public universities and 3,000 local Extension offices that offer the 4-H Youth Development Program. 4-H programs are delivered by more than 3,500 4-H professionals and more than half a million volunteers. That means 4-H s scope, along with programming developed and backed by university research, offers life-long benefits. 4-H members are mentored and empowered by adult volunteers that lead experiential, hands-on projects in areas such as science, health, agriculture and citizenship. This mentoring helps 4-H members grow confidence, independence, resilience and compassion. These traits will serve our members well as they grow into contributing adults in their communities. 4-H volunteers mentor members through a youth-adult partnership that empowers young people to become true leaders in their clubs and in the outside world. True Leaders are young people who have confidence; know how to work with others; can endure through challenges; and will stick with a job until it gets done. 4-H believes True Leaders are not born must be grown. The growth of those life-long leaders begins with 4-H s hands-on approach. More young people need this kind of hands-on, youth-led experience. Basically, members learn by doing where mistakes are not only tolerated, but expected and celebrated as a learning tool. 4-H believes failure leads to growth and eventual mastery. Young people are encouraged to have and express their own ideas and use their influence to drive positive outcomes. Adult mentors provide guidance and feedback, ask questions, share their experiences and offer lots of encouragement. The result? Young people are empowered and have the confidence to lead for a lifetime. Can we trust that the young people involved in the 4-H program will actually grow into those needed leaders? Research tell us that the answer is an emphatic yes. Highly regarded as the first-ever research project of its kind, the 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development defined and measured positive youth development outcomes for 4-H members. To complete the challenge, kids must work together to design, build and refine a wearable health-tracking device that is lowcost, easy-to-use and aesthetically appealing. The National Youth Science Day experiment takes place across the country on October 4. Kits will be available starting in April.
4 (Continued from page 1) Compared to their peers not involved in 4-H, members exceled in several areas. Some examples: 4-H members are... 2 times more likely to have participated in STEM activities than their non-4-h peers 2 times more likely to make healthier choices than their non-4-h peers 2 times more likely to be civically active than their non-4-h peers 4 times more likely to be involved in and give back to their communities than their non-4-h peers. You can access the full research report by visiting 4-h.org and searching for the Tufts 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development. As the research points out, 4-H youth are prepared and ready to engage with their communities as they grow older. So the next time you parents are running late to a 4-H meeting and wondering if all this hassle is worth it, be assured that your child is getting the best program youth development can offer and he/she will benefit well into adulthood. -Information from 4-H.org Lassen 4-H Hoof Beats Trail Trial Here is an opportunity for all horse people to have a great ride, a great lunch and help the Lassen 4-H Hoof Beats horse club at the same time. The results show that the process of youth development is positively influenced in multiple ways by 4-H Club membership and that young people who participate in 4-H Clubs do better in school, are more motivated to help others, and are developing skills in leadership, public speaking, self-esteem, communication and planning, and are making lasting friendships. A strong majority of club members felt they had gained skills that would support them throughout their lives. The majority of club youth reported multiple gains in terms of public speaking, problem solving, goal setting, leadership skills, planning skills, self-confidence, citizenship, communication skills, academic gains, expanded horizons, organizational skills, respect for (and from) others, patience, tolerance, and real-world" experience from hands-on projects. -From a USDA report prepared by Cathann A.
