1 The 4-H Link July 2017 Several Henry County 4-H Sportfishing project members attended the 17 State 4-H Sportfishing Contest at Little Dixie Lake on June 3, In this Issue General News 1-2 State and Regional News 2 Project News 4-5 Fair Tag Instructions 6 Henry County Extension, 100 W Franklin, Rm 16 Clinton, Mo (660) Member Spotlight throughout the years, I have really enjoyed showing my cattle and decorating cakes. I enjoy showing my cattle not because of the shows but because of the connection that you develop when your work with your cattle. I have shown a steer each year and have had the opportunity to sell that steer and purchase cattle with that money. I now have my own herd of cattle that provides me with income that allowed me to purchase my truck when I turned 16 and will help with my college expenses. I have enjoyed cake decorating because it brings out my creative skills. I never thought of myself as being very good at art. However, the cakes that I decorate allow me to create little works of art. This year I am going to create a wedding cake for my 4-H project. 4-H teaches you so many skills that it is impossible to be a part of this organization and just learn one thing. Time management is one important skill that 4-H has taught me. I am extremely involved in extracurricular activities in high school. I have to manage going to basketball and softball practice and games after school and still maintain good standing by attending 4-H meetings. I think it is important to attend meetings to know what is going on each month with my club and to show the younger 4-H members that being a part of 4-H is more than just participating in the county fair. Another skill that I have learned is leadership. It is important to me to be a positive role model and leader within my club and at 4-H events. I have held different officer positions throughout the years. I enjoy the team aspect of being part of the executive committee within my club. I like to help plan events and work on special projects that bring our club together like hayrides and Christmas Caroling. Going to camp each year has been the most exciting thing I have done in 4-H. I enjoyed this experience because I was able to meet new people and participate in fun activities. In the future, I can imagine myself as a 4-H project and club leader. I want to pass on the experiences and skills that I have gained as a 4-H member to others. Communication, problem solving, time-management and leadership skills that I have learned through 4-H will help me in my career and as I have my own family in the future. There are projects and opportunities for every interest and challenges that encourage leadership and decision making skills. As a 4-Her you participate in service projects that are important to you and your community. You also gain friendships and connections with others that you will keep for a lifetime.4-h is for everyone. I have been blessed to be a part of this organization. I feel honored that 4-H has been a part of my family for many years and I get to carry on that tradition. July Henry County 4-Her of the Month: Taylor Crooks The Shawnee Indians have selected Taylor Crooks as the July 4-Her of the Month for Henry County. Taylor is the 17-year-old daughter of Doug and Susan Crooks of Leeton and has been in 4-H eight years. She will be a senior at Leeton High School. My family has been involved in 4-H for many years. Both my parents and grandparents participated in 4-H while growing up. I joined 4-H to learn valuable skills, meet new people and initially to show my cattle. Being a member of 4-H is being a part of an organization that grows you as an individual. You learn life skills, leadership opportunities, and being responsible for projects that are interesting to you. Fairs, camps, service projects, hands-on experiences, leadership and mentoring opportunities are just a few of the things that make 4-H such an outstanding organization. All my 8 years in 4-H I ve been in the Beef project, as well as Cake Decorating, Home Environment and Photography. I ve done Public Speaking 6 years, Foods 5 years, Hiking 3 years and Air Pistol 2 years. PHOTOS. General News The Law of Explosive Growth This year we will be focusing on developing both youth and adult leaders. John Maxwell s 21 Irrefutable Laws of Clubs, counties, or groups of families who would like to be Henry County 4-H Link 2 July 2017

3 Leadership have been an excellent resource for tips and suggestions on how to become a leader, not only in 4-H but also in our communities. He states the one thing you need to know about leadership is there is more than one thing you need to know! This month we will focus on the law of explosive growth, to add growth, lead followers to multiply, lead leaders. Leaders are naturally impatient. Leaders want to move fast. They want things to happen and visions to be realized. To become a leader who develops leaders requires an entirely different focus and attitude from simply attracting and leading followers. It takes a different mindset. According to Maxwell: If you develop yourself, you can experience personal success. If you develop a team, your organization can experience growth. If you develop leaders, your organization can achieve explosive growth. Leaders Who Attract Followers -Need to be needed - Develop the bottom 20% - Focus on weakness - Treat everyone the same - Spend time with others - Grow by addition - Impact only people they touch Leaders Who Develop Leaders - Want to be successful - Develop the top 20% - Focus on strengths - Treat individuals differently - Invest time in others - Grow by multiplication - Impact people beyond their reach Leadership math means that if you are developing leaders, those new leaders are developing more leaders and more leaders so the organization has exponential growth. The challenge with developing leaders is that it takes a lot of time, energy and resources. 1. Leaders are hard to find leaders are like eagles, they don t flock and that is why they are hard to find. 2. Leaders are hard to gather drawing them in can be very difficult. They want excitement, flexibility and to be able to think outside the box. 3. Leaders are hard to keep you have to be able to keep ahead of them so they are receiving increased value. Stay ahead of them long enough, and they may never want to leave. The Law of Explosive Growth proves that the more you invest in people and the longer you invest, the greater the growth and higher returns. Leadership development compounds leaders who develop other leaders allow their organization to reach its potential quicker. From John C. Maxwell s The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership Officers Needed Nominations are being sought for the 4-H County Council officers. If you are interested in serving as an officer, please contact the Extension Center for an application.
