4 The View from the Helm Well here it is the final Waterspout of the spring and that means Boating Season is finally here. I trust you have plans for a good cruise this summer (despite current fuel prices), and will be prepared to share your cruising experiences at our Sept General Meeting (more to come on that). In May we have seen the conclusion of ABC classes at West Marine and Action Watersports as well as the Seamanship course. A huge THANKS goes out to all the instructors and class administrators as well as to our SEO Bill Isenberg, you all have again demonstrated what makes GRSPS such a special organization because of a wonderful group of people who so willingly give of themselves. Also in May we had our General meeting along with the Muskegon club at the Lakeshore Yacht Harbour in Muskegon. A great time, fabulous weather, super food, and a very interesting presentation by Rich Young the Muskegon Commander. He shared with us some great anchorages in the north end of the Great Lakes and introduced us to Lime Island the oldest industrial site in the Great Lakes. Many of us came a way saying we need to go visit Lime Island. We need to give a Hearty GRSPS welcome to new members: Donald Condit James Kearns Gerald Connaghan Connor, David, Kelsey & Nancy Krupp Joseph Skinner Judd Kovalak Thomas Holtslander Be sure to make them feel welcome and a part of GRSPS COMING EVENTS: Predicted Log: Weekend of June 17, 18, 19 Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival Parade: Sat Aug 7 West Mich. Rendezvous: Saturday Aug. 13; Theme Dinner Cruise on the Port City Princess (see details elsewhere in the Waterspout) Thursday Sept. 8: General Meeting; this will be a time to share your summer boating adventures. The location is yet to be determined, but mark your calendar. Have a GREAT Summer and hope to see you at one of the summer events, otherwise see you in September. Bob 2
5 From the desk of your Executive Officer So, we get a little Summer and it turns back into Spring, then Winter and Summer it must be Michigan! I hope most of you have your boats in the water or on a trailer and ready to go. Do you need a Vessel Safety Check? We have VSC events scheduled for 4 June at Ellenwood (White Lake) and Grand Isle (Grand Haven). 11 June, we will have another event at Grand Isle. If you need to have your boat examined, please use the squadron website to request the inspection or contact Diane Stehouwer stehower@altelco.net to schedule a time and place for your safety inspection. You, too, can display the decal that shows you have your boat prepared for the boating season. Would you like to be a Vessel Examiner? Contact one of us and we ll show you how. I attended the final nights of the Boating Classes at West Marine and Action Watersports. As I stated last month, hats off to our S/EO, class administrators, instructors, and the many volunteers who did such an outstanding job of providing safe boating education to the students. Many of us were there to grade exams, spend a little time with the students, tie a few knots and enjoy some pizza. I think all of the students passed the classes and some are joining the squadron. Grand Haven s Municipal Marina is the site of this year s Predicted Log. Ron Redder chairs this fun event based on the accuracy of the skippers calculations and the knowledge they have of their boat s performance. It s a great opportunity to test your boating skills and knowledge and how well you know your boat. Friday evening we enjoy a little boat hopping and fellowship. Saturday morning, boats are registered and skippers receive their materials. Then, they go into seclusion as they calculate their times for each leg of the competition. By noon, all is ready and boats are heading out the channel in preparation for the start. Soon, all boats are underway. Skippers and crew search the waters for the marks and prepare for the turns. The second-guessing of calculations and performance begins. Observers record the times as skippers call out the turns. And, when the competition is complete, the committee calculates the accuracy of each skipper s predicted times compared to their actual times. Saturday evening, we meet again for the awards dinner at a nearby restaurant. The champion is awarded the trophy and has earned bragging rights for another season. So, if you think you know your boat, enter the contest. And if you want to ride along, you can come out for the event, too. Observers are needed on each boat to accurately record the times for each leg of the event. What a great opportunity to get started on a summer of boating fun! If your marina or boating supplies store would like to reach the members of Grand Rapids Sail and Power Squadron, we offer advertising opportunities in the Waterspout. How about your favorite waterside restaurant? Virtually any business can advertise. Bill Isenberg is the squadron advertising chairman and will be happy to work with advertisers. Rates are reasonable and squadron members patronize the advertisers. Please refer all prospective advertisers to Bill at wcisenberg@hotmail.com and help support the squadron. Please keep the squadron in mind as you enjoy your summer of boating. We need photos to update the CD we use at the Boat Show. Boating activities, events, safety issues and even mistakes are all worth a photo. As soon as you get them, send them along to Denny Webb or me so we can accumulate them and use them to make our presentation more effective. Enjoy your summer of boating and do it safely. Lt/C Dave Brinks XO@grsps.org 3
6 FROM THE DESK OF YOUR EDUCATION OFFICER BILL ISENBERG JUNE 2011 Thanks to the work of dedicated instructors, administrators, and assistants, the Education Department had a successful year. We had a total of 41 Boating Safety (ABC) students in four classes including Rockford High School, West Marine, Action Water Sports, and Grand Valley Marine. We currently have 8 students taking the Seamanship Class at Lacks Learning Center. We gained 5 new members from this class. Dave Brinks was a student in the Engine Maintenance Class. Enrollment in the ABC classes increased significantly as the spring season arrived. When students were asked how they learned about GRSPS Boating Safety Classes, the majority mentioned promotions by the host facility including West Marine, Action Water Sports, and Rockford Community Education. The Internet was also mentioned frequently. The Grand Rapids Press article about GRSPS and the Boat Show was also discussed. The tri-fold class schedule brochure was not mentioned at all as a source of information. If you any suggestions about how we can improve Squadron Education, please contact my address at wcisenberg@hotmail.com. 4
