1 TYPE 1 BEARINGS Designed t be fitted t bats up t 45 feet in length the TYPE 1 bearings feature a spherical Ertalyte knuckle fitted within a precisin machined aluminium husing. This results in a bearing that is simple, light and strng. The spherical knuckle allws the bearing t self-align while the rudderstck rtates within the bearing. Bearings can be used with bth metallic and cmpsite rudderstcks. Bearings are available in any size fr 20mm t 110mm in 10mm increments. Knuckles can be bred any size t suit the rudderstck. Bearings are available in three husing styles t suit all installatin details. Aluminium bdies are andised in ur in-huse andisatin plant t ensure quality and prevent crrsive actin. The bearing is nn-watertight and is t be installed with either a full between the upper and lwer bearing r half rudder tube between the lwer bearing and a seal carrier lcated partway up the rudder stck abve the waterline. Type 1 Bearings are BUREAU VERITAS and CE apprved.

HOUSING STYLES Type 1 bearings are available with three husing styles TYPE 10.11.

One end f the bearing is machined t match the rudder tube TYPE 10.13.XX The bearing is flanged fr blting t the deck.

The uter surface is the bearing is tapered fr installatin in a matching tapered recess. The bearing can nly be used a lwer bearing. Upper side f the bearing is machined t match the rudder tube.

The bearing can be used as either an upper r lwer bearing. One end f the bearing is machined t match the rudder tube TYPE XX The bearing is flanged fr blting t the deck. Lwer side f the bearing is machined t match the rudder tube Watertight seal r a cap can be supplied n request TYPE XX This bearing is designed fr use in prductin bats. 3 COMPLIMENTARY PARTS Rudder Tubes Half and Full Rudder tubes can be supplied by JP3 n request A half rudder tube is bnded t the lwer rudder bearing and extends t height abve the waterline where secndary seal ring is fitted t the rudder tube. This detail is mre cmmnly used where there is either a quadrant r tiller belw deck. A half rudder tube is als bnded t the lwer rudder bearing and extends t the upper bearing which is bnded t the tp f the rudder tube. Seal & Retaining Rings Secndary seal rings can be supplied with lip seal matching the stck diameter. Rudder Caps A sealing rudder cap that fits with an -ring seal can be supplied. These are a light press fit int the bearing husing Cmpsite Husings Separate cmpsite husings can be supplied lse. These cmpliment the XX series f bearings. The husing can be glued and laminated in a either an existing cmpsite r wden hull. Metal Husings Matching flanged husings can be supplied lse fr use with metal hulls Again these cmpliment the XX series f bearings. The husing can be fitted and welded int a metal hull while still allwing the bearing t be remved fr future maintenance. Inner Needle Races Needle rller inner races can be supplied fr specific applicatins where lwer bearing lads are high and reducing frictin is needed The races can be fitted t each f the three husing styles. Please cntact JP3 with yur specific requirements Custm Parts Custm parts based n the Type 1 bearing such as the bearing husing that can be blted directly t a transm are available n request. 4 INSTALLATION Fur typical Installatin Layuts are shwn n pages Type 1 installatin with half rudder tube & XX bearing 2. Type 1 installatin with full rudder tube & XX bearing 3. Type 1 installatin with a wden hull. 4. Type 1 installatin with a metal hull. All bearings shuld be aligned with the rudder stck centre line. The bearing alignment is designed fr allw stck deflectin under sailing lads, NOT fr aligning the bearing with the hull and the stck at a different angle. DO NOT USE CARBON FIBRE t laminate in the bearing. When fitting bearings thrugh existing the deck ensure there is n carbn fiber in way f the blts and the bearing is islated. D nt paint r antiful the bearings. TYPE XX Crrectly align the bearing in the bat Laminate the bearing and supprting structure in accrdance with the designer s specificatin. TYPE XX Ensure the cutut fr the bearing the same size as the bearing. The bearing shuld be a neat fit in the deck s the lad is effectively transferred int the deck. The blts are t retain the bearing in the deck. Apply a suitable marine sealant t the underside f the flange and blt int the deck. TYPE XX This specific shape f bearing has been designed fr prductin bats. It des require the use f an aluminum plug r master supplied by JP3, which is installed n the muld. The advantages with this system are that: It allw fr precise psitining n each hull and repeatability A strng bearing husing laminate the is fabricated tgether with the hull N additinal laminatin is required Bearing installatin is quick The bearing can be remved fr servicing at a later date. STEP 4 The lwer bearing is fitted int the mulded husing with a bead f suitable marine sealant at the tp and under the threaded cllar RUDDER TUBE INSTALLATION. Rudder tubes are supplied glued with Sikaflex 291 t the bttm bearing When the tube is threaded t a Type XX bearing, the tube is supplied separately and is glued t the lwer fitting that screw nt the bearing. Fr full rudder tubes the tube will be supplied slightly ver length and will need t be trimmed. The tp bearing shuld be glued t the tp f the tube as final assembly. JP3 Type 1 Bearings Page 5

6 MAINTENANCE While n further immediate maintenance is required the rudder bearings like all mving parts will require cleaning and maintenance. This can easily be scheduled arund ther wrk and haul uts. We recmmend the fllwing schedule as a minimum. ANNUALLY When the bat is hauled fr underwater maintenance such as the antifuling the rudder bearing shuld be inspected externally and fr mvement. EVERY SECOND YEAR When the rudder is remved is a gd time t als remve and inspect the rudder bearing. EVERY FIVE YEARS - SERVICE The rudder bearing is remved and returned t the factry fr a full service. Typically this will invlve disassembly, a full clean and reassembly with new seals. JP3 has a large dealer netwrk and in a lt f lcatins a lcal agent can service bearings.
