1 1 Watsnia Heights Primary Schl First Aid Plicy FIRST AID POLICY PURPOSE OF THIS POLICY This plicy utlines ur cmmitment t student health and well being, it is nt First Aid instructins r prcedures. First aid incrprates basic life supprt and cmprises emergency prcedures aimed at recgnising and maintaining pen airways, and restring breathing and/r circulatin. First aid is the initial care f the injured r sick. The prvisin f first aid t injured r sick children will be undertaken by staff in attendance and supprted by staff trained in first aid. It is recgnised that first aid shuld:- preserve life prtect the uncnscius prevent injury r illness frm becming wrse prmte recvery Emphasis must als be placed n preventin f injuries and illness in the first instance by encuraging respnsibility and safe practices amngst all students and staff frm prep t grade 6. OVERVIEW At Watsnia Heights Primary Schl all staff are familiar with the schl s first aid prcedures. All staff will always endeavur t bserve their duty f care t students by prviding first aid treatment within the limits f their skill, expertise, training and respnsibilities. Watsnia Heights Primary Schl supprts first aid by: Ensuring the schl's first aid needs are met Prviding: asthma kits first aid rm majr first aid kit prtable first aid kits Managing: bld spills and bleeding students

FIRST AID TRAINING All staff at Watsnia Heights Primary Schl wh practice first aid shuld have their psitin descriptins updated t reflect this extra respnsibility. All staff receive: Level 2 first aid training And where required, additinal first aid mdules t cver: The health needs f students attending the schl, such as asthma management, administratin f the EpiPen; r Excursins, specific educatinal prgrams r activities. FIRST AID OFFICERS Cnsistent with the Department s First Aid Plicy and Prcedures, Watsnia Heights Primary Schl will allcate staff member/s as First Aid Officer/s. The names and details f First Aid Officers, including their level f first aid and first aid expiry dates, will be prvided as sn as they are knwn. The First Aid Officer/s is required t undertake a crdinating rle maintaining standard medical service prvisin, student medical recrds and parent ntificatins. There is t be a minimum f 4 First Aid Officers trained, as per DEECD First Aid Risk Assessment Guidelines. The names f the First Aid Officers are t be included n the First Aid Summary Sheet t be displayed in the First Aid Rm and Staff Rm (see Appendix 1) Their specific duties include: Participating in the risk management prcess within the schl as part f the schl s OHS team. This may include cntributing t risk management slutins and prviding feedback n injury reprts and first aid register data t identify persistent r serius hazards. Prviding first aid emergency awareness training fr staff including emergency ntificatin prcesses, a list f respnsible fficers and prvisin f emergency phne numbers. Crdinating first aid duty rsters and maintaining first aid rm and first aid kits. Prviding first aid services cmmensurate with cmpetency and training. This may include all r sme f emergency life supprt including respnse t life threatening cnditins which may ccur in the schl (e.g. cardiac arrest r respiratry difficulties assciated with asthma), management f severe bleeding, basic wund care, fractures, sft tissue injury.

3 3 Watsnia Heights Primary Schl First Aid Plicy Recrding all first aid treatment. A cpy f treatment prvided shall be frwarded with the patient where further assistance is sught. The first aider shuld respect the cnfidential nature f any infrmatin given. Prviding input n first aid requirements fr excursins and camps. Updates all medical recrds f students with existing medical cnditins (ie. asthma, epilepsy, diabetes). Frms will be sent hme t families at the beginning f each year and meetings scheduled (with the Principal) where necessary. Prvisin and maintenance f first aid facilities, equipment and infrmatin in accrdance with DEECD First Aid Guidelines. The first aid rm prvisins include 2 generic Adrenaline Autinjectin Devices, Ventlin and a generic Bld Glucse Mnitr. Implement the use f standard precautins t prevent transmissin f infectin due t expsure t bld, bdy fluids and the envirnment. Staff respnsible fr administering medicatin must be given guidelines in accrdance with any relevant health care plan fr that student, and maintain medicatin recrd. The First Aid Officer/s will be available at the schl during nrmal wrking hurs and at ther times when authrised Department prgrams are being cnducted. Where pssible, nly staff with first aid qualificatins will prvide first aid. Hwever, in an emergency ther staff may be required t help within their level f cmpetency. PROCEDURES FOR MEDICAL TREATMENT In the event f a student requiring medical attentin at Watsnia Heights Primary Schl, an attempt will be made t cntact the parents/guardians befre calling fr medical attentin except in an extreme emergency. In serius cases, parents/guardians will always be infrmed as quickly as pssible f their child s cnditin and f the actins taken by the schl. All accidents and injuries will be recrded n the Department s injury management system n CASES21. A Recrd f First Aid Treatment will be kept in the Sick Bay, this will have infrmatin fr all students treated in the Sick Bay. An infrmatin slip will be filled in and sent hme with the student indicating date and time f attendance in the Sick Bay, the treatment given and the persn administering the first aid. It is the plicy f the schl that all injuries t the head are reprted t Principal Team Member in charge f First Aid and that parents/emergency cntacts are cntacted regarding the injury.

4 4 Watsnia Heights Primary Schl First Aid Plicy It is essential that parents/carer ntify the schl in writing f any medical cnditins pertaining t their child. It is the parent/carer respnsibility t ensure that the schl ffice has current emergency cntact names and numbers. First aid kits will be available fr all grups that leave the schl n excursins. The cntent f these kits will be dependent n the nature f the activities, the number f students and staff, and the lcatin f the excursin. Prtable first aid kits will be available fr staff n yard duty. These kits will cntain: a pair f single use plastic glves a bttle f sterile eye slutin gauze and band-aids recrd bk & pen emergency cards fr at risk students (i.e. anaphylactic) ASSESSMENT AND FIRST AID TREATMENT OF AN ASTHMA ATTACK If a student develps signs f what appears t be an asthma attack, apprpriate care must be given immediately. Assessing the severity f an asthma attack Asthma attacks can be: Mild - this may invlve cughing, a sft wheeze, minr difficulty in breathing and n difficulty speaking in sentences Mderate - this may invlve a persistent cugh, lud wheeze, bvius difficulty in breathing and ability t speak nly in shrt sentences Severe - the student is ften very distressed and anxius, gasping fr breath, unable t speak mre than a few wrds, pale and sweaty and may have blue lips. All students judged t be having a severe asthma attack require emergency medical assistance. Call an ambulance (dial 000), ntify the student s emergency cntact and fllw the 4 Step Asthma First Aid Plan while waiting fr the ambulance t arrive. When calling the ambulance state clearly that a student is having breathing difficulties. The ambulance service will give pririty t a persn suffering extreme shrtness f breath. Regardless f whether an attack f asthma has been assessed as mild, mderate r severe, Asthma

5 5 Watsnia Heights Primary Schl First Aid Plicy First Aid (as detailed belw) must cmmence immediately. The danger in any asthma situatin is delay. Delay may increase the severity f the attack and ultimately risk the student s life. Asthma First Aid If the student has an Asthma Actin Plan, fllw the first aid prcedure immediately. If n, Asthma Actin Plan is available in the steps utlined belw shuld be taken immediately. The 4 Step Asthma First Aid Plan (displayed in Sick Bay and classrms): Step 1 Sit the student dwn in as quiet an atmsphere as pssible. Breathing is easier sitting rather than lying dwn. Be calm and reassuring. D nt leave the student alne. Step 2 Withut delay give 4 separate puffs f a blue reliever medicatin (Airmir, Asml, Epaq r Ventlin). The medicatin is best given ne puff at a time via a spacer device. If a spacer device is nt available, simply use the puffer n its wn. Ask the persn t take 4 breaths frm the spacer after each puff f medicatin. Step 3 Wait 4 minutes. If there is little r n imprvement repeat steps 2 and 3. Step 4 If there is still little r n imprvement; call an ambulance immediately (dial 000). State clearly that a student is having breathing difficulties. Cntinuusly repeat steps 2 and 3 while waiting fr the ambulance. FIRST AID KIT CONTENTS Cnsistent with the Department s First Aid Plicy and Prcedures Watsnia Heights Primary Schl will maintain a First Aid Kit that includes the fllwing items: an up-t-date first aid bk wund cleaning equipment gauze swabs: 100 f 7.5 cm x 7.5 cm divided int small individual packets f five sterile saline ampules: 12 x 15 ml and 12 x 30 ml dispsable twels fr cleaning dirt frm skin surrunding a wund wund dressing equipment

6 6 Watsnia Heights Primary Schl First Aid Plicy sterile, nn-adhesive dressings, individually packed: eight 5 cm x 5 cm, fur 7.5 m x 7.5 m, fur 10 cm x 10 cm fr larger wunds cmbine pads: twelve 10 cm x 10 cm fr bleeding wunds nn-allergenic plain adhesive strips, withut antiseptic n the dressing, fr smaller cuts and grazes steri-strips fr hlding deep cuts tgether in preparatin fr stitching nn-allergenic paper type tape, width 2.5 cm 5 cm, fr attaching dressings cnfrming bandages fr attaching dressings in the absence f tape r in the case f extremely sensitive skin six sterile eye pads, individually packed bandages fur triangular bandages, fr slings, pads fr bleeding r attaching dressings, splints, etc cnfrming bandages: tw f 2.5 cm, tw f 5 cm, six f 7.5 cm and tw f 10 cm these may be used t hld dressings in place r fr supprt in the case f sft tissue injuries ltins and intments cuts and abrasins shuld be cleaned initially under running water fllwed by deeper and mre serius wunds being cleaned with sterile saline prir t dressing. Antiseptics are nt recmmended any sun screen, with a sun prtectin factr f apprximately 15+ single use sterile saline ampules fr the irrigatin f eyes creams and ltins, ther than thse in aqueus r gel frm, are nt recmmended in the first aid treatment f wunds r burns asthma equipment (which shuld be in all majr prtable kits, camping kits, sprts kits, etc) blue reliever puffer (e.g. Ventlin) that is in date spacer device alchl wipes Other equipment includes: single use glves these are essential fr all kits and shuld be available fr teachers t carry with them, particularly while n yard duty bld spill kits vmit spill kits ne medicine measure fr use with prescribed medicatins dispsable cups ne pair f scissrs (medium size) dispsable splinter prbes and a sharps cntainer fr waste
