The fllwing tips can help keep yu safe: Have a Plan: Practice DUCK, COVER, and HOLD and teach children hw t d it. This and hld n t it and be prepared t mve with it. means: duck r drp dwn n the flr, take cver under a sturdy desk, table r ther furniture, Prepare an Emergency Supplies Kit: Make sure yu have the fd, water, medical supplies, and ther materials yu ll need fr at least 2 weeks after an earthquake. When the Shaking Starts: DUCK, COVER, HOLD. Stay indrs until the shaking stps. If yu re utside, find a clear spt away frm buildings, trees, and pwer lines and drp t the grund. If yu re in a car, slw dwn and drive t a clear place. After the Shaking Stps: Get t a safe place utdrs if yu think the structure yu re in is in danger f cllapsing. Prvide first aid fr anyne slightly injured and seek medical attentin fr anyne seriusly injured. Assume there will be aftershcks. Secure anything heavy that culd fall and eliminate fire hazards. Listen t the radi fr instructins regarding turning ff gas and water. If yu smell gas, r think it is leaking, shut it ff. BUT REMEMBER: Only a prfessinal shuld turn it back n.

During bilgical emergencies Lcal, State and Federal Public Health Officials will arrange fr the distributin f life-saving medicatins t areas at risk f expsure. Yur prtectin and treatment will depend n the type f rganism, such as influenza r anthrax and whether yu have been directly expsed. In the event f a Chemical Emergency chemical emergency ccurs when a A hazardus chemical has been released and the release has the ptential fr harming peples' health. Chemical releases can be caused by an industrial accident r thrugh the intentinal release f a harmful substance. SHELTER IN PLACE r EVACUATION rders may be issued fr yur prtectin. Lcal authrities will give these rders nly when necessary. In the event f a Radilgical Emergency nuclear blast r an accident in a A nuclear pwer plant can cause the spread f radiatin. A terrrist attack with a dirty bmb can als spread radiatin int the air. A dirty bmb is a mixture f explsives, such as dynamite, with radiactive pwder r pellets. SELF-DECONTAMINATION: If yu have been in cntact with a chemical agent r radiatin, remve yur clthes as quickly as pssible. Put the clthes in a plastic bag and seal. Take a shwer and wash with plenty f sap and lukewarm water. D nt dispse f the plastic bag yurself. Call yur lcal emergency authrities fr directins n hw t dispse f yur clthes. LIMIT THE SPREAD OF DISEASE Wash hands frequently with sap and water fr at least 30 secnds OR use 60% alchl hand sanitizer. Cver cughs and sneezes with tissues-dispse f tissues and then wash hands, OR cugh r sneeze int yur sleeve. If yu are sick, stay hme and away frm thers as much as pssible. Dn t send sick children t schl. Avid clse cntact with peple wh are sick. KEEP THE HOUSEHOLD ENVIRONMENT CLEAN On a daily basis, clean surfaces and cmmnly shared items like micrwaves, refrigeratr handles, phnes, remte cntrls, drknbs and handles, tilet seats and handles, faucets, light switches and tys. Use a labeled husehld disinfectant r chlrine bleach mixture (see belw). Stre brand chlrine bleach can be used as a disinfectant by mixing 1 4 cup chlrine bleach with 1 galln f cl water. PREVENTION Stay healthy by eating a balanced diet, exercising daily, getting enugh rest and drinking plenty f fluids. Remember t get yur seasnal flu sht. Rehydratin Slutin Fr persistent vmiting r diarrhea, use the fllwing: 4 cups f clean water 8 teaspns f sugar 1 teaspn f salt Mix all ingredients until the sugar/salt disappears. Yu can drink the slutin at rm temperature. Please Nte: D nt bil the slutin because that will reduce the slutin s helpfulness. 5 Yur Best Prtectin is Preparatin There are many types f emergencies. This Guide ffers infrmatin abut thse that are large-scale disasters, specifically earthquakes, flding and acts f terrrism invlving chemical, bilgical, radilgical, nuclear and explsive agents. If such a disaster ccurs, yu may be asked by authrities t take ne f tw different actins: SHELTER IN PLACE (remain in yur hme r wrkplace), r EVACUATE (leave yur hme r wrkplace). In either case, it is imprtant that yu and yur family have an EMERGENCY PREPARATION PLAN. The American Red Crss prvides all the infrmatin yu need t make yur Emergency Preparatin plan. Yu can call the Red Crss at r visit their Web site at In the meantime, it makes gd sense t put tgether sme emergency supplies fr yur hme, wrkplace, and car. YOUR EMERGENCY SUPPLIES SHOULD INCLUDE: A battery pwered r wind-up radi. Flashlights with fresh batteries. Batteries shuld be stred separately. A first aid kit, including emergency medicatins and imprtant medical recrds. A cell phne (make sure it s charged). Stred water in sealed unbreakable cntainers; ne galln per persn per day fr tw weeks. Chlrine bleach r water purificatin kit. See 'Decntaminating Water.' Every schl has an emergency plan that includes evacuatin destinatins. Call yur child s schl nw t find the lcatin and write it dwn here: A tw week supply f fd that desn t need refrigeratin, a manual can pener, and eating utensils. Trash bags, duct tape, sheets f plastic, and dispsable glves. Fire extinguishers. Add a shvel, bster cables, fix-a-flat, and flares fr yur car. Face masks and glves. Hand sanitizer. Prescriptin Medicines (2-week supply). Als, find ut what dcumentatin yu r a designated persn will need t prvide in rder t pick up yur child. In the event f an evacuatin, yu will be ntified by schl fficials where and when yur child can be picked up, s make certain the schl has current infrmatin n where t reach yu. Radi r televisin statins may als carry instructins. Finally, make sure yur child has identificatin and phne numbers he r she can use t reach family r friends.

6 Shelter in Place: Prtecting Yurself at Hme r Wrk In the event f a chemical, bilgical, radilgical, nuclear, r explsive emergency, authrities may direct yu t SHELTER IN PLACE r EVACUATE. The term "Shelter In Place" means remaining inside yur hme r place f wrk and prtecting yurself there. When expsure t a hazardus substance is imminent, fficials may advise yu t shelter in place: 1 Stay calm. 2 Bring children and pets indrs immediately. 3 Clse Listen and lck all windws and utside drs. Turn ff all fans, heating and air cnditining systems, clse exterir drs and windws. If yu have a fireplace, clse the damper. Gather yur disaster supplies and battery pwered radi. G t an interir rm, ideally withut windws. Evacuatin: Prepare a "Grab and G" EMERGENCY KIT In sme emergencies, yu may be asked t evacuate. In that case, yu ll want an easy-t-carry cntainer, like a backpack r duffle bag, with adequate emergency supplies. It s a gd idea t keep sme cash in yur emergency kit. Stre the kit in a cnvenient lcatin. Als, be sure that everyne in the family has a list f imprtant phne numbers and that yu ve decided n tw alternative places t meet in case yu becme separated.

When a FLOOD WARNING is issued Watch fr signs f flash flding and be ready t evacuate n a mment s ntice. 4 Stay tuned in t lcal radi and TV statins fr infrmatin and advice. 4 If advised by lcal authrities t leave yur hme, mve t a safe area befre access is cut ff by fld water. 4 Befre leaving, discnnect all electrical appliances, and if advised by yur lcal utility, shut ff electric circuits at the fuse panel and gas service at the meter. 4 Avid areas that are subject t sudden flding. 4 D nt try t crss a flwing stream where water is abve yur knees. Even water as lw as 6 inches deep may cause yu t be swept away by strng currents. 4 D nt try t drive ver a flded rad r arund barricades. This may cause yu t be bth stranded and trapped. 4 If yur car stalls, abandn it IMMEDIATELY and seek higher grund. Many deaths have resulted frm attempts t mve stalled vehicles. 4 Use the telephne ONLY fr emergency needs r t reprt dangerus cnditins. Residents are advised nt t use cntaminated water fr drinking, cking r bathing until the water has been disinfected using a chlrine slutin r has been tested and determined t be safe. Any wellhead that has been cvered by fldwaters shuld be cnsidered cntaminated.
