3 AN INTRODUCTION TO EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT This infrmatin packet was develped t address the needs f the citizen f Lake Twnship and t help yu prepare fr a disaster r emergency within the twnship. It prvides infrmatin that yu need t prepare fr and be self-reliant during a disaster r emergency by creating a persnalized Family Emergency Actin Plan. It is the respnsibility f the individual citizen t prepare their family t respnd t and recver frm any emergency r disaster event. CREATE AN EMERGENCY COMMUNICATION PLAN Yur family will cpe best by preparing fr disaster befre it strikes. Peace f mind can nly be achieved if yu knw where every member f yur family is, whether it is yur immediate family members r smene impacted by disaster ut f state. Having a cmmunicatin plan will help yu t maintain cntact with yur entire family. Fllw these simple steps t achieve yur peace f mind. Chse an ut-f-twn cntact that yur family members can call t check n each ther when a disaster ccurs. Make sure yur family knws these phne numbers. Make a small cntact card they can carry fr easy reference. Test yur ut-f-twn cntact regularly and have them call yu t. Leave these phne numbers with fficials at yur child s schl. 2

4 Remember t help thers: There may be elderly r handicapped residents living in yur neighbrhd that culd use special attentin during an emergency. Include them in yur cmmunicatin checklist t remind yu t cmmunicate yur willingness t help them when disaster strikes. Make a list f thse neighbrs. Ask fr their phne numbers and address, nly if they feel cmfrtable with yu having them. When an emergency strikes, make cntact with thse neighbrs and see if their needs are addressed. Help thse neighbrs in develping their wn ut-f-twn cntact. Help where yu can. When a disaster strikes, remember t always; Dial 911 fr emergency respnse. Try nt t use 911 t make inquiries, t learn infrmatin r request nnemergency assistance. During a disaster yur emergency respnse dispatchers are ften swamped with calls fr help. Make sure yur call is f an emergency nature. This will guarantee that thse peple wh really need help will get it. 7 HOME HAZARD HUNT An imprtant step in family preparedness is the identificatin f hazards in yur hme. Once the hazards are identified, it desn t take much time r effrt t make yur hme a safer place t live. 11 WHEN AN EMERGENCY STRIKES During and after an emergency ccurs, it is imprtant t stay calm. Even after an event, there may still be dangers. What seems like a safe distance r lcatin may nt be. What yu d next can save yur life and the lives f thers. During an emergency yu might be cut ff frm fd, water, and electricity fr several days r mre. If pwer is ut, fd stres may be clsed and yur water supply may nt wrk. Here are sme suggestins: Water: If a disaster catches yu withut a supply f clean water, yu can use ice cubes and the water in yur ht water tanks r pipes. If it is safe t g utside, yu can als purify water frm streams r rivers, rainwater, pnds and lakes, natural springs and snw by biling (fr 5 minutes), distilling r disinfecting. T purify water with bleach, use 10 drps f bleach per galln f water, Use nly regular husehld liquid bleach that cntains nly 5.25% sdium hypchlrite. Fd: During and right after an emergency, it will be imprtant that yu keep up yur strength by eating at least ne well-balanced meal each day. Take vitamin, mineral and/r prtein supplements.
