The Allegany Cunty Public Health Emergency Preparedness Office has a wealth f detailed infrmatin t help yu plan fr any kind f disaster. CREATING A DISASTER PLAN 1. Talk with emplyers and schl fficials abut their emergency respnse plans. 2. Talk with yur family abut ptential emergencies and hw t respnd t each. Talk abut what yu wuld need t d in an evacuatin. 3. Plan hw yur family wuld stay in cntact if yu were separated frm ne anther in a disaster. Identify tw meeting places: the first shuld be a place near yur hme--in case f fire; perhaps a tree r a telephne ple; the secnd shuld be a place away frm yur neighbrhd in case yu cannt return hme. 4. Pick a friend r relative wh lives ut f the area fr family members t call t say they are kay. 5. Draw a flr plan f yur hme. Mark tw escape rutes frm each rm. 6. Pst emergency telephne numbers by telephnes. Teach children hw and when t call Shw respnsible persns in yur husehld hw and when t shut-ff water, gas and electricity at the main switches. 8. Take a Red Crss first aid and CPR class. 9. Cnsider hw yu wuld help yur neighbrs wh may need special assistance, such as the elderly r peple with disabilities, in times f emergency. 10. Make arrangements fr yur pets. Pets are nt allwed in public shelters. EMERGENCY PLANNING FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES 1. Find ut abut any special assistance that may be available in yur cmmunity. Register with the fire department r the ffice f emergency services fr assistance, s needed help can be prvided quickly in an emergency. 2. Create a netwrk f neighbrs, relatives, friends and c-wrkers t aid yu in an emergency. Discuss with them yur needs and make sure they knw hw t perate any necessary equipment. 3. If yu live in an apartment building, ask the management t mark accessible exits clearly and t make arrangements t help yu evacuate the building. 4. Keep extra wheelchair batteries, xygen, catheters, medicatin, fd fr guide r hearing-ear dgs, r ther items yu might need. Als, keep a list f the type and serial numbers f medical devices yu need. EMERGENCY SUPPLIES

2 In a cmmunity disaster, yu may need t be able t survive n yur wn fr three days r mre. This means having yur wn water, fd and emergency supplies. The fllwing checklists will help yu assemble disaster supply kits fr each member f yur family. Try using backpacks r duffel bags t keep the supplies tgether and keep this infrmatin with yur emergency supplies. WATER: THE ABSOLUTE NECESSITY 1. Stcking water reserves shuld be a tp pririty. Stre at least a tw-week supply f water fr each member f yur family. Everyne's needs will differ, depending upn age, physical cnditin, activity, diet and climate. A nrmally active persn needs t drink at least tw quarts f water each day. Heat can duble that amunt. Children, nursing mthers and ill peple will need mre. Yu will need additinal water fr fd preparatin and hygiene. Stre at least ne galln f water per persn per day. 2. Never ratin water, unless rdered t d s by authrities. Drink the amunt yu need tday and try t find mre fr tmrrw. Yu can minimize the amunt f water yur bdy needs by reducing activity and staying cl. 3. Stre water in thrughly washed plastic, glass, fiberglass r enamel-lined metal cntainers. Never use a cntainer that has held txic substances. Sund plastic cntainers, such as sft drink bttles, are best. Yu can als purchase fd-grade plastic buckets r drums. 4. Befre string water, treat it with a disinfectant, such as chlrine bleach, t prevent the grwth f micrrganisms. Use liquid bleach that cntains 5.25 percent sdium hypchlrite and n sap. Sme cntainers warn, "Nt Fr Persnal Use." Yu can disregard these warnings if the label states sdium hypchlrite as the nly active ingredient and if yu use nly the small quantities mentined in these instructins. Add fur drps f bleach per quart f water (r tw scant teaspns per 10 gallns), and stir. Seal yur water cntainers tightly, label them and stre them in a cl, dark place. FOOD: PREPARING AN EMERGENCY STOCKPILE 1. If activity is reduced, healthy peple can survive n half their usual fd intake fr an extended perid r withut any fd fr many days. Fd, unlike water, may be ratined safely, except fr children and pregnant wmen. 2. Yu dn't need t g ut and buy unfamiliar fds t prepare an emergency fd supply. Yu can use the canned fds, dry mixes and ther stable gds n yur cupbard shelves. Canned fds d nt require cking, water r special preparatin. 3. Thugh it is unlikely that an emergency wuld cut ff yur fd supply fr tw weeks, yu shuld prepare a supply that will last that lng. A tw-week supply can relieve a great deal f incnvenience and uncertainty until services are restred.

3 4. Keep canned fds in a dry place where the temperature is fairly cl. T prtect bxed fds frm pests and t extend their shelf life, stre the fds in tightly clsed cans r metal cntainers. 5. Rtate yur fd supply. Use fds befre they g bad, and replace them with fresh supplies. Date each fd item with a marker. Place new items at the back f the strage area and lder nes in frnt.
