Program fees do not include HST. Youth programs under age 14 are tax-exempt. Member Rates Member rates on swimming lessons, specialty fitness programs, children s dance programs, and child day camp programs will only be provided if the membership is active during the time of registration and remains active for the duration of the program. The difference in pricing will not be provided as a credit at a later date. Refunds Program refund requests are accepted prior to program start and charged an administration levy of 10% or $5 minimum. Cash payments are refundable by cheque only. Program refunds are not accepted after the program starts unless accompanied with medical documentation and supervisor approval, and will be subject to the administration levy and be pro-rated accordingly. Facility rental cancellations must be made no later than seven days prior to start date and a 10% cancellation fee will apply. Cancellations made with less than 14 days notice are non-refundable. Child Minding The Centre offers a safe space where children between the ages of 6 weeks to 12 years can stay with friendly staff while you use the Centre. Kids can enjoy fun activities, games, and crafts, and we encourage cooperative play, ensuring all children have a safe and enjoyable experience. Non-members $9 per visit Other memberships $7 per visit, or $25 for a one month unlimited-use pass Maximum two hour stay per child, per visit. 6 LIFELONGLEARNING / CERTIFICATIONS HIGH FIVE The City of Peterborough is a registered HIGH FIVE organization, committed to providing quality recreation programs for children. The Recreation Division and the Peterborough Sport & Wellness Centre child and youth program staff are certified Quality Program Providers. Visit highfive.org to learn more. Parks & Recreation Ontario certifies recreation and sport program leaders to provide the best quality child programming through this interactive and informative workshop. HIGH FIVE Sport Coach Workshop (4 hours) This workshop for coaches outlines the quality assurance standards designed to support the safety, well-being, and healthy development of children who participate in recreation and sport programs. Designed to assist coaches help children develop in positive ways, and ensure a great sport experience. Heart Wise Exercise works with fitness providers in your community to develop and identify programs and classes that are appropriate for people who want to stay healthy or who may be living with a chronic health condition. Heart Wise Exercise A program or class that displays the Heart Wise Exercise logo does all of the following: Encourages regular, daily aerobic exercise. Encourages and incorporates warm up, cool down, and self-monitoring with all exercise sessions. Allows participants to exercise at a safe level, and offers options to modify intensity. Includes participants with chronic health conditions (physician approval may be required). Offers health screening for all participants. Has a documented emergency plan that is known to all exercise leaders including the requirement of current CPR certification, phone access to local paramedic services, and presence of a defibrillator. 8 FITNESS / AQUAFITNESS Aqua Pilates (therapy pool) A gentle aquafitness class that focuses on core stabilizing muscles using the natural resistance of the water and full range of motion exercises. Aquatic Post-rehab (therapy pool) This program is ideal for individuals who have suffered a stroke, acquired brain injury (ABI), or living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Caregivers are encouraged to attend in the therapy pool. Deep Water Running (leisure pool) This non-impact interval training class is designed to provide a cardiovascular workout and is appropriate for all fitness levels. This class is carried out in the deep water where participants wear a flotation belt. Aqua Yoga (therapy pool) Aqua Yoga focuses on improving balance, strengthening your body, and improving flexibility and posture using the soothing properties of the warm water in the therapy pool. Aqua Zumba (leisure pool) Join the pool party! This low impact aqua fitness class uses the resistance of the water to add a challenging workout while dancing to the beat of Latin and international music. Aqua Fitness (leisure pool) Aqua fitness is a multi-level class that takes place in the shallow and / or deep water and is great for everyone. A safe and effective fitness program conducted by qualified instructors, exercises are low impact and participants do not need to know how to swim, just be comfortable in chest deep water. Aqua HIIT (leisure pool) A high intensity interval training class designed to improve cardio and endurance, this chest deep class is for all fitness levels and will be the challenge you are looking for in the water. Experience cardio drills and muscle conditioning followed up with a stretch. Gentle Aqua Fitness (therapy pool) Designed for individuals with arthritis, osteoporosis or recovering from an injury, as well as individuals looking to increase their mobility, this mild aquatic exercise strengthens muscles and joints with little post-exercise soreness. This class is held in the warm therapy pool in chest deep water. Joint Mobility (therapy pool) Improve flexibility and function with this instructor-led joint mobility class. Run & Strength If you are looking to become a better runner, then this is the program for you. A 30 minute outside run followed by 30 minutes of strength training, this program is ideal for any speed runner or runner looking to get stronger. Step & Sculpt A great cardio workout combining interval step & strength training. This class includes 25 minutes of cardio and muscle conditioning and stretch. Did you know? 15 FITNESS / MIND & BODY Hatha Yoga This class combines focused breathing with gentle flowing and balancing postures. Longer holds are also explored for deep relaxation of the body and mind. This class may bring mental clarity, physical strength, and an overall sense of well-being. Mindful Meditation Discover meditation to awaken peace, joy and clarity in your life. Through a series of meetings you will be introduced to the fundamentals of meditation that hold the potential to transform your life. Pilates Matwork The Pilates method focuses on strengthening, stretching, and aligning of the body through physical and mental conditioning. Pilates Matwork is a strength training class designed to improve core strength and stability. Yoga Foundations Perfect for people who are interested in practicing yoga for the first time, coming back after a break, or brushing up on some basics. No flexibility required! This welcoming class will introduce the foundations and safe alignment of common yoga poses. Breathing techniques, simple guided meditations, and restorative postures will be introduced. Tai Chi Tai Chi provides a gentle and effective mind and body workout. This series of slow movements increases balance, flexibility, muscle strength, and self-confidence. Tai Chi can lower blood pressure, reduce pain from arthritis and fibromyalgia, and improve energy and stamina. PilatYcore PilatYcore is a combination of strength and flexibility exercises designed to help improve core strength, range of motion, flexibility, mobility, and posture while helping to reduce joint pain. These functional exercises are easily incorporated into daily life and can help you move through your day taller, straighter, and with greater ease. Power Pilates Power Pilates is for everyone regardless of age, gender, or ability. Increase your endurance, agility, and power, while developing core strength and giving your body a greater range of flexibility. SUP Yoga Combining hatha yoga and stand-up paddling (SUP), this class will help you gain the strength and flexibility required to maintain balance and posture on water. You'll move through a sequence of yoga postures, or asana, as well as the basics of SUP while standing on a specially designed stand up paddle board while floating in the pool. 30 SPORTRECREATION / DANCE Acro 1 (Ages 6 12) A mix of dance, balance, and flexibility this classe fuses jazz, ballet and gymnastics into a fun class that always keeps you on the move while listening to some great music! Acro 2 (Ages 6 12) After you have mastered our entry level Acro class, challenge yourself in this level 2 class. Children will build upon their tumbling, balance, and flexibility skills as they learn new Acro techniques and steps. Ballet (Ages 6 12) Develop grace, poise, posture, balance, and control and explore this beautiful style of dance in an untraditional setting. Plié with us today! Cheer Class (Ages 8 13) Develop fun skills in this cheer and tumble class, and work on proper jump techniques and cheering skills. Hip Hop (Ages 6 12) Challenge your creative side with cool moves and great music while grooving to the high energy elements of hip hop, break, funk, and freestyle. NEW Lyrical-Contemporary (Ages 8 12) Explore your individual dance style and learn lyrical technique, a fusion of ballet and jazz with expressive motions that tell a story and deliver an emotion. This class will also blend elements of contemporary dance such as freedom of expression, interpretation of music, principles of fall and recovery, control, breathing, balance, and contraction/release. Musical Theatre Production (Ages 6 12) If you love drama, dance, singing, props, and set design, then come enjoy musical theatre production and then perform your masterpiece in front of an audience at the end of the session. Pre Acro (Ages 4 5) This program bridges the gap between our Tiny Tumblers programs and our Acro Dance programs. Your child will work on skills and movement that carries over from their early tumbling, into the more clearly defined choreography and skill sets of Acro. Pre Ballet (Ages 4 5) Come join this recreational movement class with a ballet emphasis. Designed to encourage young students to explore the elements of dance in a fun and nurturing environment, setting the stage to become a future dancer. NEW Pre Groove (Ages 3 4) Explore movement and music in a fun and creative way through imagination games, upbeat music, and props to excite younger children about dance. This class is a positive and fun first dance experience for all. Pre Hip Hop (Ages 4 5) A high-energy dance, this program highlights hip hop and funk techniques so kids can enhance their creative skills while grooving to great tunes. Live Life Active Club (Ages 3 12) These play-based registered active sessions in the gymnasium will challenge children and youth to get out, have fun, and live life well. These exciting programs give children the opportunity to make new friends while participating in fun and themed recreational activities. Our full-day day camps operate from 8:00 am to 5:30 pm. Early Bird Program This program provides additional care from 7:30 to 8:00 am for those campers and their families who need an early start in the morning. 38 AQUATICS / REDCROSS SWIM PRESCHOOL Starfish For babies 4 18 months and their caregiver. The goals are to help babies experience buoyancy and movement through songs and play in the water and to teach the parent/caregiver agespecific water safety. To enter this level, babies must be able to hold their head up. Duck For children months and their caregiver. Swimmers learn how to use floating objects for support and explore different water movements through games, songs and active water play. The parent/caregiver also learns age-specific water safety. Sunfish Using games and activities, swimmers learn to swim 5 metres, increase their distance using buoyant objects, increase their front and back glide with a kick, and develop their roll-over glide, side glide and front swim. Safety skills include deep-water skills and how to use a lifejacket / Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Sea Turtle For children months and their caregiver. Swimmers learn, through fun games and songs, how to combine skills, how to kick with a buoyant object and how to perform basic floats, glides and kicks. The focus of this level is to get toddlers comfortable doing assisted activities with the instructor. Sea Otter For children 3+. Sea Otter is for preschoolers who have not previously taken swimming lessons. All skills are assisted by the instructor. Using games and activities, swimmers learn to open their eyes under water, further develop basic floats and glides and swim 1 metre, and learn age-appropriate water safety skills. Salamander For children 3 and up. Swimmers work on their front and back floats and jumping into chestdeep water unassisted. Swimmers work on their front and back glides with a kick and work toward swimming 2 meters unassisted. Level 1 Swimmers continue to improve their front and back floats, specifically a roll over float. 40 AQUATICS / REDCROSS SWIM KIDS Level 2 Swimmers learn front and back glides with flutter kick, develop front swim and are introduced to side glide with a kick. Swimmers complete activities in the deep water assisted and learn proper use of a lifejacket/personal Flotation Device (PFD). Fitness activities include the 10m flutter kick and a 10m distance swim. Level 3 This level provides an introduction to diving, and teaches swimmers how to make wise choices about where and when to swim. Endurance is achieved by building strength in a flutter kick drill and a 15m swim. Level 4 This level introduces the front crawl (10m) and back swim with shoulder roll (15m). Swimmers work on kneeling dives, surface support (45 seconds, deep water) and developing a greater sense of self-safety by understanding their own limits. Endurance is built through a 25m swim. Level 5 This level introduces the back crawl (15m), sculling skills, whip kick on the back, stride dives and treading water. Front crawl increases to 15m. An introduction to safe boating skills is also included. Endurance is developed through a 50m swim. Level 6 This level refines front crawl with a focus on hand entry and breathing (25m), back crawl with a focus on arm positions and body roll (25m), and introduces elementary back stroke (15m). It also covers safety on ice, and rescue of others with throwing assists. Endurance is built through dolphin kick and a 75m swim. Level 7 This level builds skills and endurance for the front crawl (50m), back crawl (50m) and elementary back stroke (25m) and introduces whip kick on the front. Swimmers learn about airway and breathing obstructions, reaching assists and stride entries. Swimming endurance is increased to a 150m swim. Rookie Patrol Swimmers continue stroke development with 50m swims of front crawl and back crawl. Lifesaving sport skills include a 25m obstacle swim and 15m object carry. First aid focuses on assessment of conscious victims, contacting EMS, and treatment for bleeding. Endurance is built through a 350m swim and 100m timed swim. Level 8 This level is an introduction to breast stroke (15m) and feet-first surface dives. Swimmers learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia and standing shallow dives. Endurance is built through a 300m swim. Front crawl and back crawl distances are increased to 75m each. Ranger Patrol This level focuses on further development of front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke over 75m each, a 100m lifesaving medley and a timed 200m swim. Level 9 This level refines the front crawl (100m), back crawl (100m), elementary back stroke (50m) and breast stroke (25m). Swimmers work on head-first surface dives and learn about wise choices, peer influences and self-rescue from ice. Endurance is built through a 400m swim. Star Patrol This level demands good physical conditioning and lifesaving judgment. Swimmers develop lifesaving and first aid skills; further refine front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke over 100m each. Endurance is challenged by a 600m swim and 300m timed swim. Level 10 This level is a final assessment of the strokes for technique and distance. Swimmers learn about sun safety, rescue of others from ice, and head-first and feet-first surface dives. 42 AQUATICS / LESSONS & LEADERSHIP NEW Adaptive One on One Adaptive one on one lessons provide the opportunity for every person with a disability to be water-safe and waterconfident, these lessons are geared to the swimmers ability in relation to Red Cross standards. Private Lessons Offered 7 days a week, private lessons offer one on one instruction. Suitable for all levels and swimming ability, the instructor will adjust classes to suit the needs of the swimmer. Trio Lessons Trio lessons offer a smaller class size for children to learn in. Children will be paired with others who have similar swimming ability. Bronze Star This course provides excellent preparation for Bronze Medallion. Participants develop problem solving and decision making skills individually and in partners. Candidates learn CPR and develop the lifesaving skills needed to be their own lifeguard. Includes a 400 metre swim. Bronze Medallion & Emergency First Aid This course will prepare participants to respond to a variety of aquatic emergencies and help develop lifesaving knowledge, fitness, skill, and judgment. Must be 13 years of age or completed Bronze Star. Bronze Cross & Standard First Aid This course is a continuation of Bronze Medallion and builds on the skills previously learned. Candidates are required to show proof of Bronze Medallion and Emergency First Aid on the first day of class. NEW National Lifeguard Service (NLS) Prerequisites: Minimum 16 years of age and Bronze Cross & Standard First Aid certifications issued by Lifesaving Society, Canadian Red Cross, St John s, Canadian Ski Patrol, or Heart & Stroke only. 100% attendance and participation is mandatory. Participants must purchase the LSS Alert Manual ($50). National Lifeguard Service Recertification This course is for lifeguards who need to recertify their qualifications. Certifications must not have expired more that 2 years. Recertification takes approximately 6 to 7 hours. Registrants should be prepared to stay the maximum time; should the Examiner feel the recertification is finished, an early dismissal may occur. Red Cross Water Safety Instructor & Lifesaving Instructor This course will prepare participants to instruct the Red Cross Water Safety and Lifesaving Society swim programs. 100% attendance is mandatory for this course and participants are required to complete 25 hours of assisted swimming instructing and complete an online component. Red Cross Instructor Recertification This course is designed for Red Cross Swimming Instructors who require their qualifications to be recertified. Certification must not have expired more that two years. Swim Basics for Adults Suitable for weak or non-swimmers, this class is for adults and seniors who are interested in learning the basics of swimming in a secure environment with a knowledgeable instructor. Junior Lifeguard Club For swimmers 8 years and up who can swim at least 25m and tread water for 2 minutes. Swimmers will focus on front crawl, back crawl, and elementary back stroke. Swimmers will work towards swimming 150 metres continuously. Stroke Improvement for Children (Level 8 10) Designed to assist swimmers who are having difficulty mastering their strokes. Swimmers will focus on front crawl, back crawl, elementary back stroke, breast stroke and side stroke. Swimmers will work towards swimming 500 metres. How to become a Lifeguard: How to become an Instructor: Step One: Lifesaving Society Bronze Medallion & Emergency First Aid This course will prepare candidates to respond to a variety of aquatic emergencies and help develop lifesaving knowledge, fitness, skill, and judgment.
