3 Sat 4th Shutterbug: Pt Wilson birds & sunset event Elise: Location: Point Wilson and surrounds Leaving: 2pm from Chirnside or pickup from home All members are welcome to come along Sun 5th Beards Gully Walk Muriel Difficulty: 9km, Grade 5 (no clear track, mostly walking along a rocky creek bed), 4-5 hours. Leaving: 8.30am from the Werribee post office Although this walk is grade 5, if you do not mind rock hopping along a dry creek bed, this is actually an easy walk. The walk starts from the Steiglitz Court House and we will be walking through the old streets of Steiglitz. After about 1.5km we reach South Steiglitz Rd & continue to Sailors Track. This track heads downhill through some beautiful bushland to the Sutherland Creek. This is the heart of the old mining area dotted with mining shafts. From here we will be walking upstream in the creek bed (or along the creek if there is water in the creek). This is the best part of the walk, providing a good vantage point to enjoy the beautiful bush surrounding the creek bed: the gully is bordered with cliffs and narrow banks; the surrounding hills are dominated by stringybark, peppermint, ironbark, box and yellow gum. There are also numerous tall grass trees. If we are lucky, we might see a koala lazying in the gums. Previews Sun 19th Distance: Grade 3: Leaving: Currawong Falls (Aireys Inlet) Alan: 12km Circuit walk Gentle climb over first 4 km at start but not overly steep. 8.25am from the Post Office We will travel to Airey s Inlet via the Princes Highway, Geelong bypass and Anglesea. At Airey s Inlet turn right into Bambra Road (at the bottom of a hill, so look out for it). Continue on about 5km to Distillery Creek picnic area. When entering the park, go to the picnic area on the left just up the hill (not the one on the right). There are toilets here. We will have a short toilet stop then head off in a clockwise direction past the lower picnic area and up a long gentle climb to the trig station. There are no steep hills. On the way up there is an excellent viewing point which looks out over the lighthouse and the ocean. We will then continue on downhill to the Falls where we will have lunch. Limited sitting spots here, so if you have a backpack chair, bring it along. The falls are often dry, so there is no guarantee of flowing water on the day. From the Falls we pass through attractive fern glades, past the Melaleuca Swamp and back to the picnic area. The walk should take about 4 hours, including the lunch and water stops. This will put us back at the picnic area around 2.30pm. This is a good bush walk, particularly for those who have not done it before. Sun 9th : Leaving : Mt Dandenong Botanic Gardens Nigel 8.25am from the Werribee post office Mt Dandenong Botanic Gardens, in the Dandenong Ranges, is a few minutes drive from Olinda. The drive takes about 1¼ hours from Werribee and opens at 10:00 am. We will be walking along the creek bed, rock hopping in most places or picking our way along small grassy flats lining the creek. We will need to watch out for shallow holes and trenches, dug by miners testing for gold deposits. The gardens cover a large area with a number of paths meandering throughout the park. They are situated on a hillside and returning from the lower end of the gardens is mostly a gradual up hill walk. There is a small waterfall and some rapids (provided there is water in the creek) which should be a nice spot for lunch. After lunch we continue walking through or along the creek until we reach Deadmans loop. This track heads uphill and provides some good views of the gully below before heading back into old Steiglitz and our starting point. There is quite a bit of rock hopping involved or if you prefer you can make your way along the creek bank but there is no defined track. Make sure you have sturdy shoes, wear gaiters and bring hiking poles if you have them. Do not forget to bring water, food and appropriate clothes for the season. 3 By spring I would think there would lots of birds and flowering plants throughout the park. There plenty of open grassed areas to sit and have lunch, weather permitting. After we finish at the gardens we take a short drive to Sherbrooke to do a 4 km walk to Sherbrooke Falls. This walk will depend on parking availability. There is a large car park at the walk starting point, but it may be full. This is a event but is open to anyone who wants to come. It s an opportunity for people to spend a few hours walking around the gardens with a short bush walk in the afternoon. You will need warm clothes, suitable walking shoes, rain coat, water and your lunch.
4 Sun 8th Leaders: Golden Gullies Walks Muriel & Alan A group of 15 members and 2 guests met up early at the post office on a cold and overcast Sunday morning. By the time we arrived at Vaughan Springs it had started to drizzle. Reviews this time, the steep hills proved a bit challenging for some walkers. Luckily, we soon reached the farmland where we went cross country for a few 100m. Then there was one last uphill before a steep descent to the river and the return along the water race to Vaughan Springs. People on the short walk finished the walk in 4 hours while those of us on the long walk took an hour longer. All in all a quiet walk in an interesting mining area. Sun 15th Pipemakers Park Maribyrnong Alan 13 members, attended this event which we last did in The sun was out but the wind was icy. Photo by Muriel We started as one group at Vaughan Springs following the Great Dividing Trail along a water race bordering the Loddon River. Shortly after, we left the river with the trail heading away from the water through various gullies and ridges in woodland scattered with building ruins, dams and mine shafts until Helge Track where morning tea was called. After morning tea the groups split up with 9 walkers on the short walk continuing along Helge Track and then completing the loop. Eight other walkers continued on the long walk through candlebark gums, grey and red box woodland to Sebastopol Creek. Photo by Anna In spite of the prevailing conditions there were other walkers and cyclists enjoying the day and I think there would be high numbers of people here in the warmer months. Photo by Queenie Lunch was called at Middleton Bridge which had water in it this time and provided a quiet spot with some interesting views. After lunch we continued along the road for 1.5km until we reached Helge track and followed this to Italian Hill. By 4 This was a very easy 10km stroll which caused no-one any difficulty. In the seven years which had elapsed since we were last there, it was very noticeable how much residential development had taken place, predominantly apartment style accommodation which would afford the occupants a nice view of the river. Morning tea was taken near the boathouse and lunch at the rotunda at the end of the walk. An easy calendar filler event. Thanks to all who attended. Alan

It was developed with funding from the Australian Government to provide a reliable method of quickly contacting Emergency Services in the event of an emergency situation in a remote area such as a vehicle accident, personal accident, or other incident, such as a snake bite, When activated, the app shows the current address (street number and name, if available) and the current latitude and longitude coordinates. When a call is made to one of the emergency services, this information can be passed on to the operator and this will speed response time. The club strongly recommends that members who have a smartphone install the app now. To install the app, open the WBOC website on your smartphone and then open the file: Emergency+ Smartphone App.Pdf which is located on the home page.
