3 All five of our National Indoor League teams played last week. We have the results of and reactions to the second round of matches. The weekend past of Saturday and Sunday 15th and 16th December saw the third round of matches for the 1st and 2nd Men s and Ladies teams in their respective National League Divisions, with the Men s 3rd team kicking off their campaign at DISC. The highlights of the weekend however were undoubtedly the performances of the Ladies 1sts, firstly with a 12-0 demolition of Inverleith Ladies 1sts, who have had a no more than average start to the season. This was followed up by a fantastic 4-2 victory over Milne Craig Clydesdale Western Ladies 1sts, thereby inflicting the first defeat of the season on the Glasgow side and taking over at the top of the table. Well done indeed! The Men s 1sts had a mixed bag with an expected victory over Clydesdale, but the margin of 4-1 could be seen as disappointing given Clydesdale were drubbed last week by our local rivals Grove Menzieshill, Perhaps that score was not achievable so looking at the positive, a win is a win! Next up was Inverleith who did very well last season and we went down to 6-1 defeat. That leaves us mid- table with 2 wins and 2 draws so far, but unless we can beat the teams above in the second half of the campaign, 4th spot is about as much as we can realistically expect to achieve. The Men s 2nds had an absolutely disastrous weekend, losing all 3 games played at Perth, shipping 20 goals and netting only 6: so swiftly moving on, with the bottom spot beckoning, a vast improvement is needed from next week s games at Paisley. The Ladies 2nds ended their series of games this year with a win over Bon accord 6-3 followed by defeats at the hands of Grove Menzieshill Ladies A 10-4 and Stirling Ladies 1sts 6-4. The win against Bon Accord proved crucial as it keeps the Aberdeen side propping up the division below us albeit only by virtue of the 3 points earned in that game. The Men s 3rd team opened their account with two defeats to Gordonians 2nds and Stirling Wanderers 1sts, 7-1 and 5-2 respectively, but very creditable all the same. This was essentially a very young squad consisting of
4 the youngsters Cammy Healy in goal, Tom Cole, Sean Dowie and Johnny Owen along with our more established members, Benny Gibson, Vito Gianicco and Jordan Dewar who did his fitness no harm by playing for the 4ths in an outdoor game then sprinting along to DISC to help out the 3rds indoor! All reports more than suggest that as the young men become physically stronger over time, they will be more than a match for any side in this division. Next weekend sees the Ladies 2nds take a well earned rest until 13th January next year, but other than that there is a full card for all our other Men s and Ladies sides. The Ladies 1sts are set for clashes against two of their main rivals this weekend. On Saturday 22nd December, the Men s 1sts again make the short trip to Perth to make the first game of the day at 10 o clock against Western, who sit on the same points tally but who have played one more game than ourselves. Maximum effort and 3 points here are a must if we are to keep our eyes fixed above and put a bit of daylight between us and them. The game of the day though has to be our afternoon clash with table-toppers Grove Menzieshill who have, up to now, been in imperious form, scoring freely and conceding only 6 goals in four games. However, if there is one team in the league who can upset the apple cart, it has to be us, given the history between the two clubs, and to use the old cliché, anything can happen in a derby! Let s hope it does and it s in our favour! The Men s 2nds make the longer trip to sunny Paisley for a couple of tough matches, firstly against the current top side, Watsonians 1sts who have won 4 and drawn 1 in their five fixtures; then the last game of the day at 1530, Kelburne 2nds on their home turf (well floor) who sit 2 points above with one fewer game played. It is imperative to get something out of this trip if we are to stay ahead of Garscadden who have no less an arduous task, but we can t afford to start relying on others to do us favours. The Men s 3rds are off to Aberdeen to play Granite City 2nds and Perthshire 1sts, both of whom are kicking off their campaigns that day, so there will be all to play for given there is no form guide as to how good these teams will be this year and the fact that we already have two games under our belts. Watch this space! Our top team of the Ladies 1sts are at Perth on Sunday 23rd December for a series of three games against Kelburne Ladies 1sts, Grove Menzieshill Ladies 1sts and Cala Ladies 1sts. We shall be looking to take full points against bottom side Kelburne before turning to the much more onerous tasks of our local rivals Grove/Menzieshill Ladies 1sts who after four games, are in 2nd place behind us on the same points but with a vastly inferior goal difference, but it s points that really matter and with our solid defensive and superb attacking play up to now we should be confident in collecting the 3 points. Similarly, Cala have been performing well with 3 victories and 1 defeat in their four games and are only 3 points adrift, so an equally good display will be necessary against them will be required. So, let s all make it a good pre-christmas weekend by ensuring we glean some good results and improve on or consolidate our league positions and afterwards all enjoy our Christmas and New Year celebrations. Joyeaux Noel as they say in Mill o Mains! Visit our website -
