1 Midkota Messenger April 2014 Home of the Mustangs! Website: Mission Statement: All Children Will Learn in a Challenging and Nurturing Environment. Follow us on Facebook: Midkota Public School Superintendent s Column By Gilbert Black April begins a busy month of activities including; music contests, state FBLA, state speech, baseball games, field trips and the prom. There is no slow down for events during the last two months of school ending with graduation. Students participated in the National Reading Month during March. Elementary students were actively engaged in several reading projects throughout the month. Thank you to staff and parents for highlighting the importance of reading which opens the road to great educational opportunities. Mrs. Reyerson along with her German and French students and several adults left for Europe. Always a remarkable experience, this trip takes them to sites in England, France, Germany, Austria and Switzerland. They should have many stories to tell after their return home on April 3 rd. The school board terms of Mark Willows and Keith Johnson are up for election this year. Mark represents the Binford precinct and Keith represents the GSM precinct. The filing deadline is March 31 st by 4:00 PM with Nikki Boote our business manager. If you are interested in running for the school board contact the school to receive the proper form for filing. The election is set for June 3. The school board is looking to replace the scoreboards in the high school gym. At a cost of over $9000 these new scoreboards would replace the existing boards which have become difficult to see. The board is asking for business sponsorship to pay for them. Any donation is welcome but any business that donates $1000 or more will have their name placed on the scoreboard sponsorship area. Congratulations to Saddie Harding and Brooke Ronningen on being selected to the All-District Girl s Basketball Team!
2 After many weeks of practice, the fifth and sixth grade classes presented Mastering Math, a musical comedy, to parents, fellow students, and the community. The students did a wonderful job with their lines, lyrics, and acting. They would like thank all those who helped supply costumes, props, and technical support. -Mrs. Rachel Hoeckle

11 Midkota Music Elementary Music Program The Midkota Elementary School spring music program will be Tuesday, April 29 at 7:00 p.m. in the Binford gym. All students in pre-school through 6 th grade will be participating. The theme for the evening is, It s All About Music, Charlie Brown! Join the students as they have Charlie Brown, Snoopy, and the rest of the Peanuts gang lead us through an hour of music and fun. The elementary band will also be featured on the program. Please have your student wear dress clothes, no blue jeans, please. Have them at the school and ready to be seated with their class in the gym by 6:55. See you then! High School Music The members of the high school band and choir have had a busy few weeks preparing for contests and a concert. The high school choir performed at the large group music festival in Cooperstown on March 4 where they received an excellent rating. Now they are preparing solos and ensembles for the Region 5 solo/ensemble contest to be held at VCSU on April 10. Events, both vocal and instrumental, that star that day will be eligible to perform at the State Music Contest on Saturday, May 3. The band and choirs, both senior high and junior high, are also working on concert music for the spring concert to be held Tuesday, May 6 in the Glenfield gym. Contest selections will be performed, any state awards will be given, and the evening will conclude with a trip to New York City as the choirs perform selections from Broadway. Be prepared for an evening of excitement and enchantment! -Mrs. Harvala

Eight students competed, making this the largest speech team we ve had this year. The students competing were Carly Anderson, Klay Frappier, Nita Harlen, Joseph Vollmer, McKenna Frappier, Victoria Vollmer, John Edland, and Brandon Aguirre. Joseph and Nita placed eight in the categories of Humorous Interp, and Serious Interp, respectively. This was a first meet for both, making their great finishes even more impressive. Carly placed first in the category of Dramatic Interp. It was a great tournament.

The Midkota Speech team has had a busy an productive season so far. We headed to our first meet in Finley on January 25 th. Carly Anderson and Jena Anderson both competed. Jena placed 6 th in the Humorous Interpretation category. She performs an entertaining piece about a woman who meets all kinds of interesting people on her travels. Carly placed 5 th in the Dramatic Interpretation category. She performs a piece where she plays a woman struggling with many different emotions, and it culminates in a surprise ending. On February 1 st we traveled to Devil s Lake to compete again. Both girls had a great day. Carly placed first in Dramatic Interpretation, and qualified for the state tournament. In speech, to qualify for the state tournament, you must place first at a meet that has a certain number of participants in each category. This is one of our biggest meets of the year. February 8 th found us on our way to Cooperstown. Carly and Jena both competed in their events, with both girls placing in the top 8. On February 15 th Carly was the lone speechster competing in Northwood. She competed with her Dramatic piece, and also did a Humorous Interpretation. In her Humorous piece she plays the character of Snow White, who, after waking up, finds that the poison she ingested actually had great beauty benefits, and is trying to sell her product at a women s conference. Carly tied for first place in Dramatic, but ended up in second place when the tiebreaking was done. Our next meet will be at Barnes County North on March 8. Regionals will be held in Carrington on April 8, and the state tournament is scheduled for April 26 th at the Mandan High School. We hope to increase the size of our team for the BCN tournament now that winter sports are winding down. Encourage your son or daughter to try speech it s a great way to develop public speaking skills and confidence, and have fun doing it. -Mrs. Lisa Anderson
