2 April Meeting Minutes The April meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by President Vicki Ury. Rather than opening with typical appropriate joke, Vicki gave the floor to Lorren Loewen to share a personal story. It seems while attending the final four in San Antonio Lorren crossed off yet another item on his bucket list - that of participating in the famed Buffalo Wild Wings Blazin Challenge. Acknowledging the numerous glaring warning signs of impending doom, but egged on by his now ex-friend Tom Hoeppner, Lorren took the plunge. Vividly describing his experience, Lorren kept the meeting attendees entertained for some time. Apparently, loving wife Laurie has pictures for posterity, but probably not for framing. Cross that one off the bucket list. Treasurer s Report Anita Smith reported on the state of the budget and current reserves. March Meeting Minutes The March minutes were approved as printed in the April newsletter. Gwenda acknowledged members who contribute monthly articles and photos for the newsletter. And as we start the activity and event season, a thank you to those members who attend and volunteer to report on events with articles and photos. Saying they are worth 100 Grand Gwenda gave the following a 100 Grand Candy Bar: Barrett Benson, Tom Ury, Diana Dittman, Chris Capshaw, Vicki Ury, Lorren Loewen, Tanya and Doug Cox, Anita and Steve Smith, David Hall, and Phyllis Ury for backup for taking the meeting minutes. Merchandise Vicki Ury announced that Bruce and Judy Unger have volunteered to take over the merchandise coordination. Thanks to Rick and Ann Prescott for their long stint in that role. Guests were introduced by Chris Capshaw. Kristin Lutwack and Shane Heinold were voted in as new members. Welcome! Past Event Reports Tom Phillips reported on the St Patrick s Day Parade. Tom has also volunteered to be the new Parade Coordinator. Thanks to Carol Reel who has been the coordinator for some time, but is stepping down. Thanks to Tom for picking up the baton to coordinate the Club s continued community support. David Hall reported on the CSCC Highway Beautification Program and thanked all who helped. See articles and pictures of events represented in the newsletters. Other Old Business Lorren Loewen reported on the Regional 2017 Awards. See below for results of CSCC members placing in the top 15 in each category. CSCC is the Club regional champion with 5930 points. Rookie of the Year was CSCC member Eric Beatty. Top workers in the Region for the year were Wayne Umland and Gwenda Valentine. Congrats to all! National Museum update Barrett Benson is back with tickets for the next Corvette raffle. See Barrett s article in this newsletter. New Cars-Upgrades Special News Pete Olejnik honored Jerry Stermer by showing off the metal model of Pete s 1955 yellow truck that Jerry made, right down to small details of the original truck. Tom Ury shared that after 4 years of two drivers auto crossing their C7, he finally, as a precaution, replaced the brakes. Paul Thompson has new tires and wheels on his The old tires and wheels are for sale. See them at the Corvette Center or check them out on the CSCC website. Derek and Dede Shibe purchased a new yellow 2008 Z06. Lorren Loewen gave a plug for Paul Hasty at Tint Technologies. Tint Technologies did a great job on window tint and minor clear bra repair. Rocky Mountain Region and NCCC Update See Governor s Notes from Lorren Loewen as ed prior to this meeting. Regional events coming up include CSCC Cone Zone April 15, April 21 & 22 SCCC rallye and autocross, and April 29 CWCC autocross in Fruita, CO. NCCC Updates: Walt Jenkins reported on planned upgrade to the autocross timing equipment with items to bring us more up-todate with technology. The cost is approximately $1,000, all of which was budgeted for With plans for the 2019 NCCC Convention in Denver and CSCC running the timing equipment, the CSCC Board of Officers included funds in the budget. The new equipment then will be tested this year in preparation for 2019 Convention. Walt also noted that all NCCC members should be receiving NCCC membership cards in the mail. The attempt to forego the actual card and have individuals print their own is apparently being revisited. Stay tuned. Upcoming Events Check the Events Calendar on the webpage for even more Regional events, specific information, updates, and online registration. Saturday May 12 CSCC Sanctioned Event Fun in the Sun Concours Car Show The only one in the Region. Tom Jackson encouraged participation and online registration. 5 Highway Beautification March 24, 2018 by David Hall Great early spring weather kept the 23 volunteers cool as CSCC worked in Security, CO to clean the stretch of Highway 85 between Main Street and Mesa Ridge Parkway. Due to a fantastic crew, the clean-up only required an hour and a half to finish! Many, many thanks to all who participated in this worthy community service: Roger Miller, David and Shauna Hall, Diana and Mike Dittman, Lorren and Laurie Loewen, Vicki and Tom Ury, Chris and Jonathan Capshaw, Don and Joanne Strode, Brian and Peg Dahl, Roger Grace, Tom Phillips, Jeff and Liz Scott, David Browning, Bob Knowles, Rick Prescott, and Todd Barnhardt. Afterwards many went to enjoy a warm hearty breakfast at Biscuits Café. Once again, the CSCC Highway Beautification Program thanks all who participated! 2018 Cone Zone Autocross School and Autocrosses April 15, 2018 by Vicki Ury The Colorado Springs Corvette Club offers many exciting, fun, and successful events, however the Cone Zone School is a one of a kind. Within the Rocky Mountain Region of the NCCC, we, the Colorado Springs Corvette Club, are the only club to host an event that offers autocross instructions to first time drivers and seasoned drivers alike. How it all happens First, a huge cast of CSCC members needs to be gathered to help with hosting the event. Volunteers were at the track the day before to set the course and to set-up registration. On event day, these same members and more were at the track 30 minutes prior to anyone else, manning the registration booth, teching the cars, and getting ready to instruct the racing novices. Offering an autocross school takes leadership from our experienced drivers. Thank you to the instructors : Tanya and Doug Cox, Lorren and Laurie Loewen, Steve and Anita Smith, John Ames, Roger Miller, Larry Valentine, Jay Valentine, Darrell Dearman, and Scott and Anne Lewis. Thank you to Tanya and Doug for providing the instructor shirts. We hope all the students had an exciting day. More volunteer members arrived to help with the afternoon autocrosses and stayed at the track until all equipment was stowed away. Tom and I would like to extend our appreciation and heartfelt thanks to the following members and non-members: Roger Miller, Don Adamentz, Brent Renholm, Nick Renfro, Darrell Dearman, Tanya and Doug Cox, J.D. Southwell, Woody and Kea Kercheval, Barb Hoeppner, Steve and Anita Smith, Lynn Wittrock, Pam Dougherty, Dede Shibe, Linda Munson, Bob and Bev Landdeck and Al Cozzetto from SC 3, and to Roxann Dearman s son Dalton. These members went above and beyond the call of duty and yes, some members are mentioned twice they really deserve an extra pat on the back. We would also like to extend a thank you to Walt Jenkins, Rob Miskowitch, T.J. Larson, Paul Thompson, and Lorren Loewen. Your efforts in organizing, training, and implementing a new timing team are greatly appreciated. Another new addition to the timing operation was a starting light. In the past, we had a starter wave a green flag, sending us on our way. But at this autocross, we had a starting light. The racers would sit and wait until the timer was ready and then the red light would magically change to a green light off we would go! The light is a Doug Cox creation thanks Doug! The Green Light button Our GREATEST appreciation goes to several people. Gwenda and Larry Valentine; Gwenda s expertise with our event registration process is exceptional and Larry was our jack of all trades ; Chris Capshaw for hauling the equipment trailer to and from the track and for taking many action packed pictures; and John Ames for helping Vicki out when she was in a pickle. One more thank you goes to Sophia Valentine. She is our top notch timing label person. Sophia has helped with this event and other events for the past three years. She is the granddaughter of Larry and Gwenda. For the Valentine s, it really is a family event. Larry, son Jay, and grandson Wes are all racers and Gwenda and Sophia are the team and club supporters. It is wonderful to see our Club expand into members families along with the addition of new members. The races To quote Todd Barnhardt, From start to finish, I dropped 4 seconds off my time or Kristin Heinhold, Wow, that was so cool after doing a 360 on the track. The Colorado Springs Corvette Club is an exceptional organization that held an exceptional Cone Zone event. Tom and Vicki Ury A cold and windy Saturday afternoon, setting up the course for Sunday It s serious business. Bev Landdeck, Pam Dougherty, and Sophia Valentine posting the run times for both autocrosses Page 5 of 10
6 Results: Autocross #1 Results: Autocross #2 Josh Chilcote & Erica Miller Walking the course Just talking - probably about cars and racing What class are you in? What have we gotten ourselves into? 2018 Charity Shield 616 Presentation by Chris Capshaw On April 16 th, fourteen CSCC members were able to witness the results of our club s charitable donation to Shield 616. Every year a portion of our club s renewal dues are earmarked for our club s charity. This allowed Shield 616 to present Sergeant Jim Mahan, of the El Paso County Sheriff s Office Patrol Division, a complete set of active shooter protective equipment. After the presentation, Jim met with the club members and described a little about his duties, his love for his job, and his sincere appreciation for what our club did for him. In August, club members will have another opportunity to positively impact the safety of our local law enforcement community. The proceeds of the Daniels Long Car Show, will also be donated to Shield 616, who in turn will be able to supply more valuable lifesaving equipment to our local law enforcement officers. Members available to witness the presentation: Jacob & Alice Lester, Bud & Anne Silvers, Luther & Janet Benson, Tom & Barb Hoeppner, Chris Capshaw, Tom & Vicki Ury, Paul Rahne, and Larry & Gwenda Valentine Page 6 of 10

On their first date they went dirt bike riding and then over to Tommy s Burgers in L.A. (This next part is a true story). As they were getting out of the truck they were held up at knife point. Derek talked the guy down and got the knife away and then they ended up buying him a meal and talking to him. They were youth pastors at the time and did a lot of street ministry. (My hats off to you both). For three months they dated, then got engaged and were married within eight months. Where are you from? They are both from California. Derek was born in Torrence, and raised in Chino. Dede was born in Fullerton and raised in Orange County. Derek was a surfer and Dede was a lifeguard on Santa Catalina Island in her teen years and early 20 s. Employment? Derek worked for a data security company where the job brought them to Colorado. What is the best vacation you ever took? They have been snorkeling all over the Caribbean and Mexico. A favorite family trip is when they all went to Antigua in the Caribbean. They enjoy going on family vacations when they are able to. What is your dream corvette? Derek s is the upcoming 2020 mid-engine Corvette. Dede s is a 1963 split window. How did your love of Corvettes come about? When Derek was a freshman in high school his Dad brought home a 1979 Corvette and he has loved them ever since. When Dede was in junior high she had a mentor that had a 1978 Corvette and they would ride around in that. Those impressionable years are why they have their C3 now. Anything else you would like to add? They love being involved in the club and have met a lot of wonderful people. Thanks for the interview Derek and Dede! 8 Barrett Benson Corvettemuseum.org E85-Brakes RANDOM NOTES Regarding ethanol fuels there s something I didn t cover. Did you know the octane rating on this fuel can get up around 105 or even a little higher? This means that engines that are turbo-charged or supercharged can run higher pressures without knock. Raising your pressures can increase performance over what normal gasoline can do. The bad news with ethanol fuels that they can contain about ½% water, as it is just too costly to remove during processing. What does that mean to you? The new E85 compatible vehicles have plastic-coated fuel lines to prevent corrosion of the lines, and it would be smart for anyone to always keep fuel tanks full during long-term storage, or things like the fuel gauge are subject to contact with the water and could corrode. Next month I am writing an article about Corvette brakes what works and what doesn t. I ve been playing around with aftermarket systems on my C7 and should have some results to include in my article. Let me know if you ve had some braking experiences that should be shared. For instance, did you know that slotted rotors are in and drilled rotors are out? Find out why next month. I m still looking for people to sponsor a garage night. Subject matter could be anything from detailing, scratch removal, clay barring, or fluid changes. I can help with the program or there does not need to be a program. If you would like to write an article, or have suggestions for one, contact me at tfury@comcast.net. Tom Ury I hope you recall that in last month s column I discussed NASCAR team owner, Chevrolet dealer and Museum Hall of Famer, Rick Hendrick s purchase of the first retail 2019 ZR1, with proceeds going to veterans Building for America s Bravest charity. On Wednesday, March 14 Hendrick visited the GM Assembly Plant in Bowling Green to see his ZR1 roll off the line, and started his black on black convertible with adrenaline red interior, 3ZR package, automatic tranny, and more. (While the Assembly Plant has not reinstated tours yet, if you spent $925,000 for a Corvette, GM made an exception!) Afterwards, he toured the Museum, then drove a Stingray around the Motorsports Park track. You may also recall that several months ago I described the new racing simulator located on the Museum s Corvette Blvd. The simulator offers visitors of all ages a chance to get behind the wheel of a real C6 Corvette and pilot it around a virtual track. The Vette received a yellow wrap and racing decals from Pratt & Miller, giving it an eye-catching new look. Sessions on the simulator are $10 each. The price of the popular Build Sheet and Window Sticker reproductions offered by the Museum increased by $5 on April 1 st. NCM offers them for Corvettes assembled in Bowling Green from its opening in 1981 to current production. Unfortunately, the sheets and stickers are not available for 1982 Corvettes with VIN numbers thru , thru , and thru The Window Sticker and Build Sheet combination is $90 for NCM members and $105 for non-members. The Window Sticker paper copy is $45 for members and $55 for non-members. Lamination is $5 for each. RAFFLE At the May meeting I ll have $10 tickets for a 2019 Stingray. Page 8 of 10
