5 15 th Annual Pagosa Springs Event The Setting David & Sandy Hammond Some may say this weekend was the norm for the Pagosa Springs event and I d have to say I agree. We had a great social get-together Friday afternoon where everyone got a chance to talk about the planned events or remind others of past fun times. We also shared time at a group dinner party, and although the service was pretty slow, most everyone had fun meeting others; telling stories; or even having a beverage (or 3). Bottom line we had fun, and then continued the party back at the hotel in the game room. Saturday kicked off the planned events with a funkana-style rallye where teams got detailed instructions of how to get to the various checkpoints, then play a game at each checkpoint. In order for teams to earn extra poker cards, they had to: use a straw to move an M & M to another dish (in order for their partner to throw a ball in a bucket); shoot one or more pool balls into a pool table pocket; and toss Chevrolet bean bags into a beautifully designed (thanks Jerry) corn-hole style board. Each team got a minimum of 5 cards, but could earn up to the total of 11 cards. Congrats to the top 5 teams, starting with the Bochnaks (full house); the Hammonds (flush); the Halls (flush); Roger Miller and Pat Kiernan (straight); and a Pagosa team (Mancusos) with a straight. As you can see, some teams had some amazing luck! Some may think that was enough fun for the day, but they d be wrong. This year brought on a totally different approach for the People s Choice car show. We had the event AT the hotel. As it turned out, it was a great approach as we had nearly 3 times as many voters as normal. Each got to vote for their favorite car and the competition was tough. We had numerous ties for various positions, but the top 4 include a Pagosa couple (the NeSmiths) for 1 st ; Derek and Dede Smith (2 nd ); Jonathan and Chris Capshaw (3 rd ); and Mike and Winnie Bochnak (4 th ). You may be asking yourself didn t I see Bochnaks name as a top finisher in the rallye? Well you d be right. Because of their excellent finishes, they were awarded the Grand Champion award. Congrats to all. You all made the show a HUGE success. Thanks to all those behind-the-scene workers that helped make the event such a success, but especially to the checkpoint workers (Stermers, Valentines, and Olejniks) who made the games extra fun. Planning for next year s event has already started; reservations at the hotel have already started; and new members (David and Sandy Hammond) have already volunteered to help chair the event. Now THAT s leading by example! While lots of pictures have been posted to the Club s photo album and Facebook page, here are a few that captured some of the fun. Billiard hustler Early arrivals Dittmans, Bochnaks, Smiths, and Valentines relax at the Thursday night Bronco Game salvaged by a surprise spectacular finish! The trip there and back was interesting. If it s not one thing, it s another.. Oops! Dejected TJ Larson misses the hole. Who thinks up these games? Hey Roger, I know lamb s wool is good to clean your car with, but this is ridiculous! 6 By Chris Capshaw One of the great blessings we have living in Colorado, is the opportunity to view some of the most gorgeous examples of Mother Nature. On two days in late September, 30 sweet Corvettes and one venomous serpent (Viper), took to the local highways, and absorbed some of the most eye pleasing sights Colorado has to offer. Members of our club joined by members of some other clubs, cruised through parts of Colorado Springs and Garden of the Gods, before heading west through Woodland Park, Divide, Victor, Cripple Creek and Florissant, where they were treated to amazing fall colors. The weather could not have been any better for these over-visually stimulated Corvette enthusiasts. Countless people along the way stopped their own fall color admiration, and turned their attention towards the fine examples of America s only true sports car passing by. Bikers (motorized and non-motorized) along the route, waved at us and we returned their display of appreciation. Just when our cruisers were about to overdose from visual stimulation, the cruisers stopped off for lunch at the Colorado Mountain Brewery, before heading home and realizing just how fortunate we are. Top of the Rockies Corvette Association Fall Autocross Results The October 4th autocross put on by the TORCA club at the Front Range airport was attended by fifty plus drivers from the region. The weather was cool which was good for the engines and drivers but not for the tires. CSCC was represented by Don McCoy, Cindy McCoy, Steve Smith, Jeff McCutcheon, Tom Ury, Roger Miller, John Ames, Kitty Divis, Laurie Loewen and Lorren Loewen. Jeff and Laurie had the fastest overall times for our club members completing the course in just over one minute. A great time was had by all. By Lorren Loewen Page 6 of 10

7 How long have you been a CSCC member? I joined in 2012, Walt Jenkins was my sponsor, maybe since we both have white C6's Get to Know Your Fellow Members An Interview with Daniel Schuck and play first base. I also enjoy golf and photography. I also consider myself an amateur poet and songwriter too. Now if I could only find someone to write the music, I will be set. What Corvette do you currently own? I have a 2010 Arctic White coupe that I bought in My goal was to own one before I turned I named it the White Knight and finally got my custom plates last year. There is a long story behind its name, however, it would take a few beers or a good bottle of wine to explain it all. Where are you from? I was born and raised in a small town in Southern New Jersey named Delran. It is located at the confluence of the Delaware River and the Rancocas creek. I lived there until 1988 when I loaded up my modern day version of a Conestoga wagon and followed Horace Greeley s advice of "Go West Young Man. I have never regretted my decision. Employment? I have been in the Information Technology business since (i.e.: Computer Programmer) I worked for Ross Perot's company from 1988 until it was bought out by Dell in (I have actually met Mr. Perot four times). Kids/Pets? I have two adult sons and have always had Collies as my pets. My last Collie was named Cowboy and, unfortunately, I had to put him down in He was the best dog I ever owned. He truly was man s best friend to me! Favorite Club activity? I enjoy rallys, car shows, and some auto crossing. I was the men s regional rally top contender in I really enjoy auto crossing at the State Patrol track in Golden. (It's not easy to get lost on that course :-) Hobbies? I have always loved baseball and these days I play on a men s softball team in Colorado Springs. I pitch What is the best vacation you ever took? If I had to pick one, I'd say the Corvette caravan trip I took in 2014 out to California to the Paso Robles area (I like wine and wine tasting) and up the Pacific coast to San Francisco (Fisherman s Wharf, Lombard street, Golden Gate bridge etc.) and then on to Lake Tahoe and back via Salt Lake City... What is your dream Corvette? My dream came true when I got the White Knight. When I wash and detail it, I can just stand back and admire it as it sits there. That feeling is hard to explain to some folks who are not into cars, however, many of you know the feeling I am talking about...it's the pride and feeling of a job well done. How did your love of Corvettes come about? All through the first half of my life, I could never get to the point of being able to justify the purchase of one. I always seemed to need 4 seats. I owned Mitsubishis attempt at a sports car, a 1994 Mitsubishi twin turbo 3000 GT. In 2009, I had a life changing event that was equivalent to Wile E. Coyote getting hit by the Acme anvil. My 3000 GT was taken from me along with many other things I treasured. They say that when one door closes another one opens. Given time, that door does open, but usually mighty damn slow. One day I realized that I had to live life one day at a time and live it to the fullest. As fate would have it, the Vette I would ultimately purchase was listed online as a dealer internet special. I made its image my screen saver for about a week so I could look upon it and think about the purchase decision. The White Knight came home to live in Palmer Lake in 2011 and life is good again. Anything else? I truly believe that buying that car saved my life. (Maybe Chevy could use that as a commercial :-) I have met so many wonderful people in this club and experienced so many things and events that I would have never believed possible. I have been truly blessed, and I thank God every day to have been so fortunate. FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS CSCC HIGH SCHOOL HOMECOMING SEASON 2015 HS homecoming season was one of happy memories, smiles, and great cars. The high school students thought our Corvettes were HOT and the Colorado Springs Corvette Club was well represented throughout our community. The season is about four to five weeks long and in that small span of time, we had 59 cars represented in 7 events. HOLY SMOKES!!!!!! Club members drove in the following high school homecoming events: Palmer, Falcon, Coronado, Discovery Canyon, Widefield, St. Mary s, and the Community Parade in Widefield. Two of the events, Mesa Ridge and Hanover, were unfortunately rained out this year. As a Club, we impact our community in ways we never dream of. At each event, students and parents walk around the Corvettes asking questions of our members. The conversations alone are wonderful. But the best part allowing a student to sit in the driver s seat and then telling him or her to start it up PRICELESS!! I would like to thank all of the club members that so generously donated their time, each of the schools have made a generous donation to our Christmas Food Basket Fund. A HUGE THANK YOU goes to: Bob Balink, Melvin Swindale, Patty and Dick Strauch, Mike Dittman, Skip Seiling, Don Anderson, Brian Dahl, Bob Knowles, Kathy Morey, Jean Munninghoff, Paul Thompson, Chris Capshaw, Jim and Kelly Zajicek, Dave Ury, Jeff Scott, Ray Fullwood, Terry Darby, Joel Haas, Roxann Hart, Duane Back, Steve Smith, Dan McCarty, Roger Grace, Derek Shibe, Pete Olejnik and most of all - Tom Ury my partner in crime. by Vicki Ury Page 7 of 10

8 Barrett Benson Corvettemuseum.org Stiction Stiction is a short word for Static Friction. It s defined as the parallel force required to begin or enable motion of stationary objects in contact with one another. Simply put, it takes much more force to get an object to move than it does to keep it moving that s stiction. In automotive applications, stiction is a big deal. In cases of diesel trucks, on very cold mornings, stiction can prevent the engines from rotating when starting, and the fuel injectors from cycling. Ford had serious problems with this in their diesel engines from 1994 through Stiction even has an application when auto-crossing a Corvette, as when a tire is in contact with pavement, though rolling, it is static to opposing forces until it begins to slide. Once sliding, stiction is lost and directional stability is gone. Suffice to say, once traction is lost in this manner, a car will deviate from the hoped-for direction and race times will suffer. In most industries, stiction must be anticipated and understood at the design phase and plays an important role in product outcome. Some oil companies are now advertising their products using this term. Now you know a little more about what it is. Please let me know if you have any ideas for future tech articles. Tom Ury VETS N VETTES... EVENT HONORS OUR VETS As November 11 th approaches, it s fitting that our Corvette Club sponsor, Daniels Long Chevrolet, along with the National Corvette Museum among others, salute our veterans for their sacrifice and service. In 2008, NCM began its tradition of honoring our veterans, POWs, and MIAs with the Vets n Vettes event. With the ensuing years, the event has expanded to include the American Warrior Recognition, a way of providing returning warriors with a special Corvette Experience. Thursday, November 5 th kicks off the three day event. Fort Campbell and Fort Knox will send members of their Warrior Transition Battalion to Bowling Green KY to enjoy a day at the Museum. Rides in participants Corvettes at the Motorsports Park (MSP) track will be offered, as well as lunch and tours of the Museum and Assembly Plant. Not to be missed among the many planned activities is a viewing of the 1941 biographical movie Sergeant York starring Gary Cooper. Afterward, Gerald York, grandson of Sgt. Alvin York, will share stories of his grandfather s legacy as one of the most decorated American soldiers of WWI. You can register for the event at NCM s website, and sign up to give our Vets a ride in your Vette at the MSP and parade. NOTES: The NCM has revised and improved its website: Wendell Strode, Executive Director of the Museum, has received the Distinguished Nonprofit Leadership Award recognizing outstanding leadership among Kentucky nonprofit chief execs.
