5 DCA Vettes on Broadway Car Show Stars were shining bright at noon on June 17th, as some of our club members collected trophies at the Denver Corvette Association s car show. About a dozen members cruised up to John Elway Chevrolet in Englewood, put their Corvettes on display, and won awards in every class entered. Chris and Jonathan Capshaw collected 2 nd place in the C3 class with their 1978 coupe, and Anne Lewis secured a 1 st place win in the C4 class, with her 1996 Grand Sport. Tom and Maite Hanon s 2007 coupe brought home 2 nd place in the C6 class, while the ZO6 s of Tad Brown and Scott Lewis, fought a pitched battle in the C7 class. When the dust settled Scott was holding the 2 nd place trophy, and Tad had 3 rd place. Prospective members Mike and Deb Plumb s 2008 coupe rounded out the winning, by collecting 3 rd place in the Modified class. Ouray Getaway Road Cruise On June 23 rd twenty-nine club members and guests, in fifteen Corvettes took off for a little getaway to Ouray, CO. Things got off to a shaky start due to some drizzle and fog, but once they passed over Wilkerson Pass everything brightened up. All along the way the travelers were met with gorgeous vistas, and innumerable onlookers who showed their approval as the Corvettes passed by. Several Corvette owners encountered along the way, waved, and accompanied us for a while as we cruised along. Most of the cruisers elected to challenge the Million Dollar Highway, and the San Juan Scenic Skyway, while others chose to visit the Gateway Canyons Auto Museum, or set out to follow their own desires. The staff at the hotel, and all the eating establishments went out of their way to make our members feel right at home. Everybody was asking where the next getaway would be. Steamboat Springs and Glenwood Springs were two suggested destinations. Drive Your Vette to Work Day On June 30, 1953, the first Corvette rolled off the assembly line. To celebrate the 64 th birthday of the Corvette, 29 Corvettes parked at the Hub Diner and the owners enjoyed a quick lunch together on Friday, June 30, The annual Drive Your Corvette To Work Day was again an entertaining activity. DCA Challenge at Keystone July 1-2 July 1 st and 2 nd was the annual Challenge at Keystone Autocrosses, sponsored by the Denver Corvette Association. It was two days of fast straight-a- ways and tricky corners, enjoyed by all who attended. The rumbling of mufflers could be heard by the Keystone maintenance crews working at the top of the mountain, several of them stopped by on the second day to see the excitement. Drivers from SC 3, TORCA, DCA and CWCC were there to partake in the stiff competition. We also had 3 out of state drivers join us: Rene Cardenas, Carolyn McLemore and Brett English; these NCCC members are at the top or near the top in this year s national competition bracket. Rene is competing for his 5 th NCCC championship title. It was fun to meet them and then to race with them. Representing CSCC were: Don & Cindy McCoy, Roger Miller, Steve & Anita Smith, Darrell & Roxann Dearman, Tom & Vicki Ury, John Ames, Tanya & Doug Cox, Barb & Tom Hoeppner, and Anne & Scott Lewis. In our club, John Ames and Laurie Loewen had the fastest times for the first day and John Ames and Tanya Hrabal-Cox had the fastest times on the second day. Last but not least A BIG THANK YOU goes to Cindy and Don McCoy for hosting another Independence Day Bash at their home on Saturday night. It is always nice to eat, drink, and be merry with friends from CSCC and the other clubs. June 24th, 25th Casper Wyoming Car Show and Autocross The Colorado Springs Corvette Club was well represented over the weekend at the Central Wyoming Corvette Clubs Car Show and Autocross event in Casper Wyoming. Steve and Anita Smith, Doug and Tanya Hrabal-Cox made the car show on Saturday. Steve and Anita took the "Participants" Trophy, while Doug and Tanya took a "Top 5" best of Corvettes Trophy. There were 29 Corvettes amongst the other Chevy show cars. Tanya also won the 50/50 raffle. New friends were made and a great time was had by all. The Central Wyoming (Casper) Club put on an excellent venue. The Autocross on Sunday was a day with some great lap times, as Lorren Loewen and Tanya Hrabal-Cox took home the FTD's. Tom and Vicki Ury, Laurie Loewen, Roger Miller, Doug Cox, Steve and Anita Smith were also there challenging Lorren and Tanya for best times. Mark Hurd represented the DCA club as well and was the only DCA or Torca member on hand. There was a great turnout from the Casper crowd. The course was a bit challenging when it came to the parking lot section of the course. Page 5 of 10

6 Ft Carson Freedom Fest Car Show by Chris Capshaw On a bright sunny weekend leading up to the 4 th of July, the Colorado Springs Corvette Club, swept the two-day Fort Carson Freedom Fest Car Show by capturing the top 3 spots for Corvettes. Hundreds of people gazed at all the cars on display. When it was all over, Rick Prescott s 1961 captured first place, while Tom Phillips 2016 convertible captured second place. Due to a mix up by the judges, Chris and Jonathan Capshaw s 1978 L-82 coupe was awarded 3 rd place, but only after it was discovered their car had not even been judged! Chris and Jonathan weren t upset though, because along with their third place trophy, they also took home the coveted People s Choice trophy. 4 th of July Monument Parade and CSCC BBQ - by Walt Jenkins The 4 th of July dawned a perfect day - 75 degrees, no clouds and no chance of rain. We gathered on Old Denver Highway just south of Monument and were lucky enough to be entry number 43. I think that the Children s Parade had entries 1 through 40, so we were 3 rd in line. Fortunately, there were trees that kept us cool while we were waiting for the parade to start. Darrell and Roxanne brought some Dunkin Doughnut Holes to fend off the hunger. Chris Capshaw looks like he was one of the first to arrive and assisted in getting all of the cars parked. He was (as always) the main photographer for the group and did a great job at both, Thanks Chris! We had 17 cars for the parade but almost lost Dan McCarty s C7 due to what seemed to be a clutch issue. Not long after the Parade began, Dan s car started to smoke, clearly from clutch material being burned away. Thankfully, we all made it through the parade. We were directed down Old Denver Highway for the exit, rather than the normal 105 exit. By the time we got back to the starting point, the rest of the parade hadn t even started on the parade route yet. So there was a huge backup, but after about 20 minutes of waiting, everything took off again and most of the parade participants made their way to Mike and Winnie Bochnak s home in Gleneagle. As always, Mike cooked up some appetizers consisting of Polish and German sausages that were delicious. I had to make sure they were fit to consume for everyone, so had to sample them. I declared them wonderful and Mike started putting them out for everyone to eat. They were all gone in about two minutes and he had more going, but even though they went fast, I think everyone got some of the sausages. The appetizers were all gone by the time everyone showed up and we started to feast on all of the delicious food that everyone brought. Mike and Winnie also provided fried chicken as the main meat dish and it was great as usual. Potluck s are my favorite as everyone brings a dish excellently prepare and I get to sample all of it. I didn t quite get to taste every dish and dessert, but I tried! Good conversations and stories abounded and we all broke up at about 3:00 and went home. Thanks to Mike and Winnie for opening up their home to the CSCC and for those of you that missed it, you missed another great 4 th of July Parade and BBQ. Trash Pickup July 8 25 hearty souls braved the sunshine of Security, CO to clean the stretch of Highway 85 between Main Street and Mesa Ridge Parkway. This is a worthy community service. thank you to the following for helping in this activity: Gerry Turner, Tom Phillips, David and Shauna Hall, Roger Grace, Tom Hoeppner, Steve Smith, Roger Miller, Elaine and Tim Collins, Alta and Pete Olejnik, Brent and Jeremy Renholm, Phyllis and Dave Ury, Colleen and John Williams, Dan McCarty, Joe Horvath, Lorren Loewen, Diane and Mike Dittman, Vicki Ury. I would also like to announce that David Hall will be taking over as coordinator of the CSCC Highway Beautification Program. Good Luck and Thank you David! Tom Ury Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo Parade July 11 by Chris Capshaw Thirteen Corvettes from CSCC along with a dog, and a horse, participated in the 77 th annual Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo Parade. All CSCC members were wearing their very best Roy Rogers and Dale Evans costumes. All were duly deputized before saddling up, and cruising down Tejon Street. Once all the Corvette wranglers had finished dodging the pedestrians, and recycled hay; many of them moseyed over to Big Dog BBQ, for some fine chuck. Ric Noring CSCC Parade Sponsor Page 6 of 10

7 CSCC Heat Rash Autocrosses How many people does it take to.. by David Hall The CSCC Heat Rash Autocross was held July 16 th under a beautiful, cloudless PPIR sky and the autocross certainly lived up to its name! Over forty drivers from across the region, twelve dedicated CSCC workers, and many course worker volunteers enjoyed the mid-july weather to complete a successful event. There were also some interesting metal cars joining in the fun of competing on a long and fast John Ames designed course. There were lots of riders with huge grins on their faces asking for one more ride? as they finished the course. As the day progressed, it was evident that the 60 second mark was the one that few were able to beat. Three races with three runs each were finally finished at about mid-afternoon with several CSCC competitors finishing nicely. Congratulations to Tanya Hrabal-Cox with a Ladies first, second, and third Overall FTD; John Ames with two Class wins and a Men s second Overall FTD; Laurie Loewen with a Ladies second and third Overall FTD; Tom Ury with three Class wins; and Darrell Dearman with two Class wins. Thanks to all of the CSCC team that made this event possible. Special thanks to the race chairmen and co-chairmen, Steve Smith, Roger Miller, Darrell Dearman, and David Hall and to all who helped make the event a success with the course set-up, equipment set-up, registration, time posting, grid and course workers, and starters. Yes, it does take a lot of team effort but man, what fun! Page 7 of 10

8 Barrett Benson Corvettemuseum.org Claytime All of us would love to drive a shiny car and if one is willing to invest a little effort, I want to give you a tool that will enhance any car s finish. Strangely, only a very few people use this wonderful and great finish-enhancing tool. I m talking about claybar that stuff you played with as a kid is now an adult plaything. I recently clay-barred my black C7 and decided to do only half of the hood and see if I could tell the difference. My car is only 3-1/2 years old, so how much would claybar improve the gloss or feel of the paint? I was skeptical. To tell if your paint needs help, wash your car and see how rough the paint is by using your hand. You can also use your hand inside a sandwich baggie for a more enhanced feel. If it s rough, it needs help. That s what claybar is good at. The procedure is simple. First, spray a small area with a soap and water solution (or if you want to preserve your wax, use a finishing spray) and take that bar of automotive-grade clay (don t steal it from your kid), kneading it periodically to expose a new surface, and rub it on the paint in a circular motion. Wipe clean and rewash. That s it. It should be rather effortless if you have enough solution on it. How much? How long? Up to you I think. What is the hard part? --Keeping that little --now slippery as a greased pig very small piece of soapy clay from falling and hitting the ground. If it falls, throw it away and hope you bought more than one. I understand someone makes a holder for it a great idea. The clay will grab any piece of grit laying around and could damage your paint. Now that you ve finished, go ahead and use that polish or wax, or if you used a finishing spray, you should not have a need to repolish. To polish or wax? Perhaps that is a subject for another time. Try it on just half of your hood and I think you ll be as amazed as I was. Does anyone want to have a garage night for a demo? If you would like to write an article, or have suggestions for one, contact me at tfury@comcast.net. Tom DENVER RAFFLE WINNER & LeMANS STATS RAFFLE WINNER: Colorado claimed another winner of a Corvette from the Museum as Robert Adams of Denver held the winning ticket for a 2017 Admiral Blue Grand Sport.
