4 Nitrogen for your tires To fully understand why nitrogen is used in some tires and not in others, we need to understand a few basic principles. Hopefully, after you ve read this, you will have enough information to make a decision if nitrogen is right for you. Most of what you are breathing right now is Nitrogen (N), so yes you already have nitrogen in your tires, 78% to be exact. The rest is mostly oxygen (21%). The nitrogen molecule is much larger than Oxygen and hot dog shaped, so it stands to reason that the oxygen leaks out from the small pores in your rubber tires faster, leaving your tire underinflated. If you are lazy and refuse to check your tires monthly, maybe nitrogen is for you, but read on. Your tires inflate and deflate all by themselves, based on ambient temperature, about 1 psi for every 10 degrees. In Colorado, cold tire pressures can vary by as much as 5psi without doing anything, regardless of what gas is in the tires. There are some other benefits to Nitrogen. Nitrogen is a gas that carries no moisture, compared with Oxygen. Heat in a tire is less affected by pressure if there is no moisture in it. If you have an old classic car with 40-year old tires, having nitrogen in them can help with less corrosion of both the wheel and the tire. Aircraft use only Nitrogen because it reduces the severity of fire with their magnesium wheels in a skid. If your tire has Nitrogen, it may have a green dot on the valve cap. You will have to increase or rarely even decrease your tire s pressure just due to seasonal temperatures if you have pure nitrogen or not. You should air up your tires to match the sticker on the driver s door or door pillar NOT THE SIDE OF THE TIRE. The temperature of the tire should be cold not in your garage cold, for the reading to be correct. You can adjust for the temperature in your garage by adding 1psi for each 10 degrees colder it is on the outside. Don t forget, atmospheric pressure has a huge effect on tire pressures, so if you travel to sea level, your tires may need to be re-inflated and vice-versa upon returning home. Keeping your tires inflated properly with ensure longer life and best handling when needed for cornering or braking. Bottom line is, unless you get Nitrogen free, it s probably not worth it. 5 The First Spring Fling Crazy Otto s by Chris Capshaw The CSCC s first Corvette show of the year happened on a beautiful March 21 st morning at Crazy Otto s Diner. Over 30 Corvettes representing all 7 classes graced the parking lot. Radio advertisements for the show brought in numerous Corvette enthusiasts, and several of our new club members. Charlie Boland s 65; Jeff Smith s 60 Members and onlookers alike; spent a couple of hours admiring all the fine examples of America s only true sports car. As the appointed time for announcing the winners of the two categories approached, the people were anxious because they all wanted to drop the hoods and cruise. Jack Cox, owner of Crazy Otto s Diner fell in love with Mike and Winnie Bochnak s 2015 Z06, and awarded them the Best Vette trophy. Competition for the People s Choice trophy was very tight, and Chris and Jonathan Capshaw s 1978 L-82 coupe, squeaked by several other very fine Corvettes for the win. Johnny Harris, Charlie & Joy Boland, Bob & Cindy Robinson, John Ames, Karen & Wes Powell, Tom Lynch, Tom Jackson, Rick Prescott, Dan Miller, Don Anderson, Mike & Winnie Bochnak, Jerry & Diane Stermer, prospective members Derek & Dede Shibe, Bob Balink, Chris Capshaw, Russell Gregg, Tom Hanon, Rick Mendoza, Steve & Anita Smith, Jeff Smith, TJ Larson & Amanda, and Phillip Moore. Everyone passed. Thanks to Larry V, Tom U., Don A., and Dave U. for keeping the cars rolling, and to Gwenda and Vicki for snacks and sideline commentary. 8 A Corvette Weekend April Vicki and Gwenda use a makeshift table at the side door of club trailer as protection from wind, cold, and rain. Parkas = Let the Racing Begin Don t let the sunshine fool you! Saturday - 7 chickened out before the day Just a little bit ominous as the clouds move in. The die hards Shauna & David Hall, Vicki Ury, and Gwenda Valentine Don Adametz any night is a good night for drag racing! Sunday, same place, same story cold and windy, sunshine & fun. Parkas = Let the Racing Begin! Saturday The Denver Corvette Association ran events at the Pueblo motor sports facility for decades and now it was time for the Colorado Springs Corvette Club and the Southern Colorado Corvette Club to return to the same sight for some early season racing. All the racers kept a wary eye on the weather as the mid- April weekend approached hoping for something better than the forecasted doom and gloom. Racers from all over the state were reporting snow, sleet, grovel, wind, rain, and hail mixed in with a teaser of sunshine every once- in- a- while with Pueblo getting its fair share. Well that s pretty much what they got all of the above...especially the wind. Not to be deterred from the first NCCC points drag event 20 drivers showed up Saturday afternoon for evening bracket drags. Everyone was having a good time qualifying for the eliminations then the sprinkles started. No drag racing permitted during sprinkles. It was apparent that even if the rain stopped that the track would not dry before the wee hours of the morning. Pack and go home. Sunday Ok so we had a little bit of a bummer with the previous night s weather but Sunday dawned with mostly sunshine, 45 degrees, and tons of hard wind no threatening rain. Still another 23 drivers arrived, some with race tires, some not, and were ready to try out the superb asphalt and layout of the road course. Many drivers were knocking off a few seconds here and there run after run when all of a sudden some were 10 seconds faster while others were much slower. Oops slight issue with the timing explained everything. Line them up again and let them go! By noon the wind abated and the temperature rose just enough that most everyone was cutting off a few more seconds every lap. After the last lap smiles were evident everywhere, including those that did off road excursions, 360 s in the middle of turns, and loop-de-loops through the finish line. It s going to be a great year! Barrett Benson bsqaured@q.com NCRS CONVENTION in DENVER this SUMMER Did you ever attend a National Corvette Restorers Society (NCRS) national convention? Well, now s your chance--- in Denver, July th. In this month s column, I thought I d acquaint you with NCRS. NCRS was formed in 1974 to preserve, restore, and enjoy early Corvettes. Over the years, it encouraged and published studies and research on Corvette history, and collected a lot of related information. So much so, that by the 1980 s NCRS members recognized the need to protect, archive and store its many accumulated materials. Thus was born the National Corvette Museum, and while created for this purpose it has grown to its current national prominence. NCRS is a proud lifetime supporter of the Museum, along with the National Council of Corvette Clubs (NCCC) and many regional Corvette Clubs. The NCRS Rocky Mountain Chapter (RMC) is hosting the 2015 convention at the spacious Crowne Plaza Hotel & Convention Center (50,000 indoor sq-ft) at Denver International Airport. Many events are planned, including judging vintage Corvettes, mountain cruises, and trips to many metro-denver attractions. NCRS judging is recognized as the standard in determining originality. Certifying judges on the highest qualifications, the Judging System is designed to educate owners about their Corvettes, and provide recognition for excellence in the areas of restoration, performance, or preservation. Unlike car shows where Corvettes compete against each other in their specific classes, each Corvette is judged against NCRS standards. Entrants work diligently to bring their Corvettes up to NCRS standards based on assembly plant criteria established for each year. That is, each Corvette must look, perform, and drive as it was shipped from the assembly plant. Judging is thorough, and not all entrants meet all criteria established by NCRS. Fortunately, entrants who don t achieve success can enter future judged events to correct failed items. At this year s convention, Vintage Corvettes ( ) will be judged by teams of NCRS experienced and qualified members. Judged categories will include: Flight Judging ( ); Duntov Award ( ); Dave McLellan Award ( ); Dave Hill Award ( ); Star/Bowtie ( ); Cross Flags ( ); Performance Verification ( ); Year of the 1965 Display; NCRS Sportsman Display ( ) You ll get to see many beautiful vintage Corvettes in one location, talk to judges, and mingle with NCRS members. Registration is now open, and you can save with a discounted fee by registering for the National Convention online at The discounted family fee is $135. I hope you can attend some or all of the sessions. As an active member of the RMC, I ll be there. and, who knows, maybe you ll want to become a member too! Page 8 of 10
