6 DCA Vettes on Broadway Saturday June 16 Chris Capshaw Fifty-Five years is a long time. That is the number of years The Denver Corvette Association (DCA), has been associated with the dealership, which is now known as John Elway Chevrolet. On June 16 th, DCA held their Vettes on Broadway People s Choice Car Show. There was a large gathering of Corvettes for the event, and about 20 members of our club made the trip to Englewood to attend. John Elway Chevrolet provided door prizes, trophies, and even fed everybody. CSCC members were able to secure almost half of the awards with Rick Prescott taking 1 st place in the combined C1 and C2 class. Jeff Shay and Regina Trimble collected a 2 nd place win in the C5 class, while Rick Mendoza took 1 st place. Tom Hanon brought home a 3 rd place trophy in the C6 class, and Chris and Jonathan Capshaw brought home 2 nd place. CSCC swept the C7 class with Gerry Turner taking 3 rd, Mike and Winnie Bochnak taking 2 nd, and Doug and Tania Cox taking 1 st. Rounding out the awards was Bob and Di Druitt taking 3 rd place in the Custom Class, and Steve and Anita Smith winning 2 nd place. A fun day for all. Steamboat Springs Adventure Cruise June by Chris Capshaw Part of the purpose of our club as stated in the bylaws, is to encourage planned trips, events and social activities for members of the CSCC. That is exactly what happened when 53 members (including some future members) in 25 Corvettes and some metal cars set out on a 3-day adventure cruise to Steamboat Springs, CO. On Day 1 all assembled at Rudy s BBQ and headed west, and then north. A lunch stop was made in Frisco, CO for some fine Mexican cuisine, before making the final leg into Steamboat Springs. Upon arrival the owner of the Rabbit Ears Motel who also happens to own a Corvette, presented the participants with special T-shirts made just for the cruise. On Day 2 everybody was free to follow their heart s desire and take advantage of the myriad activities which were available. Probably the most popular activity was the cruise to the town of Grand Lake, where Bob Balink acted as a tour guide, and took a boat load of members on a boat cruise of Grand Lake. On the evening of Day 2, all gathered for a group dinner where stories of the day s activities were exchanged. Day 3 saw the majority of members set out for home via a scenic route through Rocky Mountain National Park. Just when we thought the scenery couldn t get any more beautiful; it did. Along the way, one member almost got a very expensive souvenir from the Kremmling Police Department, but the stars were aligned properly and he was soon able to proceed without any financial hinderance. After a lunch stop in Estes Park, those who did not miss a turn ended up back home at the scheduled time. July 4 th Monument Parade by Chris Capshaw On the 242 nd anniversary of the birth of our nation, eighteen club members in about a dozen highly patriotically decorated Corvettes assembled under the hot July sun to participate in the Monument 4 th of July parade. Once the final decorating touches were made to our great examples of America s only true sports car, we sought out whatever shade we could find as we waited for the parade to begin. As in years past the thousands of spectators who lined the streets shouted their approval as we meandered by. We were honored to receive the Motorized Distinguished Entry Award, which was proudly displayed on one of the Corvettes, and our club s banner. Page 6 of 10

7 Highway Beautification July 07, 2018 by David Hall The day was bright and warm as 9 dedicated volunteers worked in Security, CO to clean the stretch of Highway 85 between Main Street and Mesa Ridge Parkway. Even with the limited manpower, due to a fantastic crew, the clean-up only required an hour to finish! Many, many thanks to all who participated in this worthy community service: David and Shauna Hall, Chris and Jonathan Capshaw, Bob Knowles, Jim Nile, Dan McCarty, and Alta and Pete Olenik. Afterwards many went to enjoy a warm hearty breakfast at Biscuits Café. Once again, the CSCC Highway Beautification Program thanks all who participated! Alaska Cruise and Land Tour -June 27-July 7, 2018 North to Alaska Or Yeah, Sure, What Wildlife? By Larry Valentine Here s the plan we re taking a week and a half cruise/land trip to Alaska and we ll all meet in Vancouver on Wednesday, 1:00 pm. See you there. Can you believe it? All four CSCC couples, Dittmans, Bochnaks, T. Urys, and Valentines showed up and on time! Off they went taking in all the sights and sounds of the Alaskan Inside Passage plus a great tour of Denali National Park. Everyone did side excursions according to personal tastes providing great story telling over dinner each evening. The CSCC group was joined a day late by Ray & Pat Jenkins, brother of Walt Jenkins and Corvette owners from Mesa, AZ. The complete tour included planes, trains, ship, boat, bus, shuttle, and automobile. The tour of Denali was wonderful with a bit of irony the wild life consisted of one moose (with calf) in a parking lot. Annnd Who would ve thunk it sunshine every day! General consensus: - Do it again in a heartbeat! Pikes Peak or Burst Rodeo Parade July 10 by Tom Phillips The 2018 Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo Parade was another outstanding event for the Colorado Springs Corvette Club. The Club entered 18 beautiful Corvettes (7 C7s, 4 C6s, 7C5s) and 31 participants. It was a beautiful evening, an enthusiastic crowd, and everyone was dressed in their finest cowboy and cowgirl attire, embracing the theme of the parade. Staging started at 5pm, with most arriving early, giving everyone the opportunity to say hello to new and old friends. The parade began at 6:30pm and lasted approximately 1 hr, after which, participants departed for Bird Dog BBQ for some good food and more camaraderie. It was another very successful and productive event for the Colorado Springs Corvette Club. Great job by everyone in attendance! Roster of participants Tom & Kathy Phillips,Chris and Jonathan Capshaw, Gerry & Kathy Turner, Kim Welsh and Rex Nipper, Jimmy & Angela Linn, Daniel Schuck, Rick Mendoza & Carol Shumaker, Robert Sanders & Linda Leslie Paul Trees & Judith Michaels,Todd Barnhardt, Tim & Elaine Collins, Ron Wynn, Paul & Nancy Rahne, Terry Darby, Bob Litten,, Pete Kulzer & Valerie Harvey, Diana & Mike Dittman, and prospective members Ron & Jeanne Urban. 8 Barrett Benson Corvettemuseum.org Corvette Body Panels I hear a lot of people calling the body panels on the Corvette different things: fiberglass, plastic, and composite. Which is it? Here s the explanation. 1953: Starting with the first automotive application of fiberglass in mass production, the Corvette s panels were just that, Fiberglass and resin, layered into a one-sided mold. As cool as that was, they were difficult to prep and paint with any consistency. As these bodies aged, many developed cracks and checking through the paint and in high stress areas. 1968: Fast forward to 1968 when the body panels were made of a new press-mold process, where there is a two-sided die and compression can be used. This is where technology took a leap. Now they can better control thickness and weight. Still all fiberglass, but rather than layering it in sheets, I believe this is where they sort of sputtered the fiberglass on in short strands. 1973: The factory changed the formula significantly, using SMC (Sheet Molded Compound), which was fiberglass, resins, and a catalyst, along with a high- heat molding process. This new process increased material strength and made the paint prep process easier, and they could make it thinner and lighter. Fiberglass content continues to drop. 1981: This is the year they added plastic to the formulation. Now you can call them plastic. Less and less fiberglass. 1997: With the introduction of the C5, the formulation changed again, adding vinyl, styrene, calcium carbonate and a host of other fun things. Fiberglass content now is a lowly 20%. I ll call it plastic/fiberglass composite. 2005: Gasp! The C6 was introduced with steel rear fenders!!? I might be making this up, but a very good article I read, on the internet of course, said the C6 utilized steel rear fenders at least at its introduction. I call BS, but is the article correct? The C6 also saw the ushering in of carbon fiber on a larger scale. 2014: The C7 generation added roof, hood, and other carbon fiber elements for standard models. 2020: The C8, for now, looks like the current panels will stick around, for base models especially. Today s plastic composite fiberglass panels are virtually indestructible and look great. Look for more carbon fiber on the higher- end packages, just to save weight (and extract $$ from worthy customers). Tom Ury CORVETTE s 66 th YEAR & NCM RACING EXHIBIT CORVETTE BIRTHDAY CHEERS! As enthusiasts, we know June 30 th is celebrated as the birth date of the Corvette. In 1953, the very first Corvettes were being assembled in Flint, MI with June 30 th the day the first completed production car rolled off the assembly line. Only 300 were assembled, all Polo White with red interiors, and all convertibles. And here we are 66 years later (65 production years), thankful that America s sports car is still rolling off the line. Did you know that NCM s film on the history of Corvette is played in the Museum s Chevrolet Theater? The film was recently awarded a Bronze Telly Award for the non-broadcast General Automotive category. NCM members can watch the flick, along with other videos, available in NCM s MEMBERS ONLY section of the website. Another reason for you to join and support the Museum - you can watch the video without traveling to Bowling Green. Of course, it s much better to see the video on the large screen, and in person. I enjoy watching it every time I visit the Museum! NEW RACING EXHIBIT The Museum s Exhibit Hall has once again been transformed to feature a special themed display. Through January 4, 2019, the story of Chevrolet racing is told, from the early days of Louis Chevrolet as a racing driver for Buick, through the AMA ban on racing, to Chevrolet s racing involvement with NASCAR, and the Le Mans winning Corvettes. Significant stories are told through the display of various cars and artifacts, engines including one from a C5-R, a fuel injection cutaway, race suits, and more. Check it out on your next Museum trip; I m looking forward to visiting the exhibit at NCM s 24 th Annual Celebration this Labor Day weekend. NOTE: The 2019 Rocky Mountain & High Plains Corvette Caravan Registration is open. Contact Co-Captain Keith Bennett (keith@keithbennett.org) for more information. I summarized the registration procedures in last month s Vette Set. RAFFLE: At the August meeting, I ll have $10 tickets for a Torch Red 2019 Stingray convertible, to be drawn at NCM s Annual Celebration on September 1, Page 8 of 10
