5 May 14 -Fun in the Sun Concours Car Show It appeared the 24 th annual Fun in the Sun Car Show, was going to happen without the sun making an appearance. Cold drizzly conditions existed as the participants started showing up, and began putting the final touches on their Corvettes. Many people lamented about not bringing winter clothing to help them ward off Hypothermia, but the sun finally showed up and everybody began to thaw out. The judges promptly went to work at the appointed time, inspecting the almost forty Corvettes which were entered. All seven classes of Corvettes were represented, and the competition was very close. It was quite obvious to everyone in attendance, that a great deal of time and effort was put into the preparation of these classic cars, as well as the organization of the event. Rick Noring and Barrett Benson, are to be commended for stepping up, and organizing this event. Thanks also needs to go out to the numerous (far too many to mention, but they know who they are) volunteer judges, registration helpers, and the like, whose unselfish efforts made the event run smoothly. Many smiling faces were seen, as the winners were announced, and here is a listing of those taking home awards: Nick Renfro 1967 C/P B 1 st place Mike Burgess 2004 C/P F 1 st place non NCCC Tony Russano 2011 C/P G 2 nd place non NCCC David Kolkhorst 1999 MOD F 1 st place Gerry Turner 1965 S/S B 1 st place James Beatty 1986 S/S E 1 st place Richard Weakly 1999 S/S F 1 st place non NCCC Daniel Schuck 2010 S/S G 1 st place Tom & Vicki Ury 2014 S/S H 1 st place Mark Hauschild 1988 W/S E 1 st place Wes Powell 2006 W/S G 2 nd place Rick Mendoza 1990 C/P E 1 st place Tom Hanon 2007 C/P G 1 st place & Best In Show Steve Smith 2014 C/P H 1 st place Jeff Smith 1960 S/S A 1 st place Hal Tumbleson 1979 S/S D 1 st place Matt Startup 1996 S/S E 2 nd place non NCCC James Agnew 2004 S/S F 2 nd place non NCCC Boyce Greenard 2011 S/S G 2 nd place non NCCC Chris & Jonathan Capshaw 1978 W&S D 1 st place Tom Jackson 2008 W/S G 1 st place Carol Shumaker 2014 W/S H 1 st place Valerie Curricato 1986 W/S H 2 nd place non NCCC Page 5 of 10

6 May 15 TORCA Colorado State Patrol Track The May 15th autocross at the highway patrol track was interrupted by some rain but that didn't stop those that attended from having a good day of racing. There was approximately 40 drivers that included seven from the Colorado Springs Corvette Club. Those that attended were Steve Smith, Walt Jenkins, Dan Schuck, Kitty Divis, Roger Miller, Laurie Loewen and Lorren Loewen. Of our members Lorren and Laurie had the fastest overall times for the day. Laurie had women's FTD in the morning and Kitty had women's FTD for the afternoon. The men were fast but, not fast enough to capture any FTD's. Off road entertainment was provided by Steve Smith and Kitty Davis. Page 6 of 10

7 Get to Know Your Fellow Members An Interview with Joe Horvath By Diana Dittman How long have you been a CSCC member? Since October of 1986, almost 30 years; Joe is a lifetime member What Corvette(s) do you currently own? Currently own an 85 coupe. In the past, he owned a 68, 62 convertible, 73 (had for 37 years) and a Where are you from? Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He lived there until Joe came here on a road trip in the 70 s and liked it so much that he came back to live here. He said Ft. Lauderdale was getting too crowded. Employment? Joe works for Waymor trucks and is the maintenance provider for Budget truck rentals. He has been there for 14 years. He takes care of the trucks from Castle Rock to southern Colorado. He works 50 to 60 hours a week, sometimes more. Before going to Waymor he worked at an auto shop in Fountain. Pets? He had his beloved black Lab for 15 years. Favorite club activity? Joe likes the cruises and car shows. He has been to 5 National Conventions. He has also been first Vice President and Governor for CSCC in past years. Hobbies? Joe likes to work on muscle cars. He is restoring his Buick Grand National V-6 Turbo. He also considers photography one of his hobbies. What is the best vacation you ever took? Back in the 70 s Joe did a 3 week road trip with a friend in his 1973 Corvette. They started in Florida and visited Georgia, Tennessee, Kansas, Colorado, South Dakota, Montana, Canada, and Illinois (and probably more that we left out). They mostly stayed at roadside parks and camped out. What is your dream corvette? C7 Grand Sport How did your love of Corvettes come about? In Jr. High, a friend s brother had a 62 Corvette. Unfortunately, the brother had to go to prison so Joe took care of the Corvette and stored it. He drove it around for a year. Ever since then he has loved the Corvette. Anything else you would like to add? Joe has been a long time member of the Corvette club and has a lot of great memories and stories to share. He remembers the regional events in Douglas, Wyoming from years past. The club did a lot of road trips and rally s. The club also used to park spectators cars for the Pikes Peak Hill Climb, when you could still take your cars up there before the race started. Joe says there are a lot of great people in the club, all joined together for the love of this unique car, the one and only Corvette! Thanks so much for the interview Joe. Page 7 of 10

8 Barrett Benson Corvettemuseum.org Rock and Roll Yes, Rock and Roll applies to your car as well. This is not a desirable trait, however, and here s how they help prevent it. Chances are there s a U shaped steel rod running all across your car s suspension that goes by many names. We call them torsion bars, anti-sway bars, sway bars, anti-roll bars, and maybe a few more I can t think of right now. It s difficult to explain exactly how they work, but when you turn a corner, the side of the car on the inside of the turn tends to lift up and want to cause the car to roll over. Your torsion bar is situated in such a way as to cause the bar to twist (Torsion) when an imbalance occurs, thus resisting the tendency to lift up. Performance cars, as you might have guessed, have much larger diameter bars than do regular cars. A Corvette Z06 has larger bars than the standard model. There is a trade-off between a comfortable ride, and one that corners very flat. I like to test my cars just to get a feel for how effective the torsion bar works by driving at about 30mph and yanking the steering wheel as hard and fast as you can. You ll see quite a response in rollover tendency, depending on the car. I can do this in my C7, in track mode, and the car stays incredibly flat. You may not want to even attempt this in your family sedan but it s fun to see the difference. I m running out of things to write about and would like to continue this column. If you have a question, or want me to write about something, let me know at tfury@comcast.net. Tom Ury PAINT SHOP UPDATE & EXTENDED DISCOUNTS Paint Shop -- As reported previously in this column, the Corvette Assembly Plant s new paint shop has been under construction in Bowling Green, KY for almost a year. Although the final steel beam has been installed, a lot of work is still to be done, including the installation of revolutionary equipment, the first of its kind in North America. Of particular note, an environmentally friendly dry scrubber system will clean the air contaminated by the painting operation. It will capture the paint waste from the air, treat it with limestone then recycle it. The new $439-million shop means continued production of cars in Bowling Green, and ensures continued employment of about 150 people currently working in the paint shop. Completion of the shop is a year away from painting its first Corvette! Military Discounts -- In honor of May s National Military Appreciation Month, Chevrolet, Buick and GMC are expanding their military discount programs thru May 31 st for all 21 million U.S. military veterans and their spouses. The program will include all veterans, regardless of their separation dates. The discount is available for popular models, including Corvettes; the 2017 Corvette is excluded. For details, visit gmmilitarydiscount.com NOTE: For all of you asking for a color other than red, I will have $10 tickets for a 2016 black Corvette convertible to be raffled by NCM on September 3 at the Annual Birthday Celebration over Labor Day weekend.
