1 A QUICK OVERVIEW: The Padres fi nished the 2015 campaign with a record of 74-88, slotting them in fourth place in the National League West Division, 18.0 games back of the fi rst place Dodgers and 23.0 games short of a wild card berth. The Padres were vs. the NL West, vs. the NL Central, vs. the NL East and 7-13 against the American League in interleague play. PACKING PETCO: The Padres drew 2,459,742 fans to Petco Park in 2015, the seventh-highest home season attendance in franchise history and the fifth-largest since moving into their downtown ballpark in Their 2015 attendance total was their largest since drawing 2,790,074 fans to Petco Park during the 2007 season. The 2,459,742 fans to attend a game at Petco Park in 2015 was a 264,369 increase over the 2014 total of 2,195,373 the average attendance during the 2015 season at Petco Park was 30,367, a 3,264 person per game increase over last year s average of 27,103. The Padres increase in attendance this season was the sixthhighest in Major League Baseball and third-highest in the National League. TRANSACTION-PALOOZA: The Padres opened the 2015 season with 15 players on the Opening Day 25-man roster that were not on the roster to start the 2014 season this list includes six pitchers (Despaigne, Garces, Kelley, Kimbrel, Morrow and Shields), two catchers (Nieves and Norris), four infielders (Barmes, Middlebrooks, Solarte and Spangenberg) and three outfi elders (Kemp, Myers and Upton). From the end of the 2014 season until Opening Day 2015, the club made 10 trades involving 38 players (coming and going) and made four 40-man free-agent signings. In a 24-hour window between December 18-19, the Padres made a total of 30 transactions (trades, signings, DFA s, minor league moves, etc.) which, since data became available, is the most ever by a Major League club in a 24-hour stretch. In the season opener against the Dodgers on April 6, San Diego had eight different players make their Padres debut (Myers, Norris, Kemp, Upton, Middlebrooks, Barmes, Shields and Kelley), the secondhighest number of team debuts in the same game in franchise history, trailing only March 31, 2011 (Opening Day) when the Friars had nine players make their team debut. MAKING PITCHERS UNKEMP D: Matt Kemp posted a.265/.312/.443 (158-for-596) with 31 doubles, 23 home runs and 100 RBI in 154 games with San Diego this season. Kemp was the 14th different player (19th time) in franchise history to record 100+ RBI in a single season and the fi rst since Chase Headley drove in 115 runs during the 2012 campaign Kemp was also one of 13 Major Leaguers and one of four National League players to reach the 100 RBI plateau this season. His RBI total ranked 13th in the Majors and fourth in the NL. Among players in franchise history to play 75% or more of their games in a single season in the outfi eld, Kemp was the sixth player in franchise history to record 100+ RBI in a single season and the fi rst since Greg Vaughn had 119 in 118 (see chart). WHO S THE ROSS?: Tyson Ross fi nished the 2015 campaign with new career-highs in innings pitched and strikeouts after he went with a 3.26 ERA (71 ER, IP) and 212 strikeouts against 84 walks while limiting the opposition to a.237 batting average. His strikeout total finished the season ranked 13th in the Majors, sixth in the National League and second on the team (Shields, 216). Ross 212 strikeouts were a new career high, surpassing his previous best of 195 SO set in 2014 Ross was the second pitcher in franchise history to record 195+ strikeouts in consecutive seasons, joining Jake Peavy who did so in three straight seasons from He also posted a 9.73 strikeouts per nine innings ratio (212 strikeouts/196.0 IP), the second-best mark in franchise history by a starter, trailing only the 9.87 mark (189 SO/172.1 IP) set by Andy Benes during the 1994 season. Ross innings pitched in 2015 was one more inning than his previous record of IP set in 2014 he was the fi rst Padres pitcher since Jake Peavy from to record in consecutive seasons (Peavy did so in three straight seasons). Ross allowed just nine home runs in IP, good for a 0.41 home runs per nine innings ratio, the third-best mark among qualifi ed Major League starters, trailing only Jake Arrieta (0.39) and WSH Gio Gonzalez (0.41) it was also the seventh-best mark in franchise history and the best since Kevin Brown had a 0.28 HR/9 (8 HR, IP) during the 1998 season. Posted a inning streak without allowing a home run from April 28 - July 29, the longest by a Major League pitcher in a single season (in terms of both starts and innings pitched) since Mets starter Sid Fernandez went 16 starts and innings pitched during the 1992 season was the third-longest in terms of innings pitched in franchise history, trailing only Dave Roberts (123.1 IP from 4/30-7/20 in 1971) and Padres Hall-of-Famer Randy Jones (107.1 IP from 7/3-9/11 in 1978). 2 SAN DIEGO PADRES 2015 SEASON REVIEW MORE ON TYSON BOSS : Ross recorded 212 strikeouts and allowed nine home runs in 2015 and recorded 195 strikeouts and allowed 13 home runs last season since the start of the 2000 campaign, Ross is the fi fth Major League pitcher to have consecutive seasons of 195+ strikeouts and less than 15 homers allowed (see chart). Of the 10 listed seasons in the chart, four of them earned Cy Young Awards (Kershaw & Lincecum ). MAMA SAID PUNCH YOU OUT: The Padres pitching staff recorded 1,393 strikeouts in 2015, a new franchise record, surpassing the previous record of 1,295 held by the 2010 club. The Padres fi nished the season ranked fourth in the Majors and third in the NL in strikeouts, trailing only the Chicago Cubs (1,431), Cleveland Indians (1,407) and Los Angeles Dodgers (1,396). The Padres starting rotation recorded a franchise-record 890 punch-outs, surpassing the previous team record of 828 set during the 1998 season the starting rotation s strikeout total ranked sixth-most in the Majors and fourth in the National League. The Friars pitching staff recorded 57 games of 10+ strikeouts, the highest total in franchise history, surpassing the previous record of 50 done during the 2010 season. THE WHIFF: The Padres had four pitchers this season with 160+ strikeouts (Shields 216, Ross 212, Kennedy 174, Cashner 165), marking the first time in franchise history they ve had more than two pitchers eclipse the 160+ strikeout mark in a single season (last Kennedy and Ross in 2014). San Diego was one of three Major League teams to have four pitchers with 160+ strikeouts this season, joining the Chicago Cubs (Arrieta, Hammel, Hendricks, Lester) and the Cleveland Indians (Bauer, Carrasco, Kluber, Salazar). Prior to the 2015 season, the last National League West team to have four players with 160+ strikeouts in a single season was the 1969 Houston Astros (Don Wilson 235, Larry Dierker 232, Tom Griffi n 200 and Denny Lemaster 173). His nine seasons with innings pitched are the second-most among all active Major League pitchers, behind only Mark Buehrle (14 seasons). Shields posted a 13-7 record and 3.91 ERA (88 ER, IP) with 216 strikeouts against 81 walks while limiting the opposition to a.248 batting average over 33 starts Shields started the 2015 season 7-0 through his fi rst 14 starts of the season (until June 14th), a new career-best streak to start a season he was just the second pitcher in Padres history to start a season 7-0, with the only other to do so being Andy Hawkins, who began the 1985 season a franchise-best 11-0 in his fi rst 12 starts. UPTO(W)N FUNK YOU UP: Justin Upton fi nished the 2015 season leading the Padres in both home runs (26) and stolen bases (19), making him one of three players in franchise history to fi nish a season as the team leader in both homers and thefts, joining Reggie Sanders in 1999 (26 home runs, 36 stolen bases) and Dave Winfi eld in 1976 (13 home runs, 26 stolen bases) Upton was the only player in Major League Baseball this season to lead his team in both home runs and stolen bases and the first Major Leaguer since MIN Brian Dozier, MIL Carlos Gomez and LAA Mike Trout all did in Upton fi nished the season with a.251/.336/.454 (136-for-542) line with 26 doubles, 26 home runs, 81 RBI and 19 stolen bases in 150 games for San Diego he was one of three Major League players with his combination of home runs and stolen bases, joining BAL Manny Machado (35 HR, 20 SB) and ARI Paul Goldschmidt (33 HR, 21 SB). Belted 15 home runs at Petco Park in 2015, tied with Will Venable in 2013 for the highest single-season total in ballpark history all-time, owns a.282/.360/.519 (125-for-443) line with 25 home runs and 61 RBI in downtown San Diego, the fi fth-best batting average, the third-best on-base percentage and second-best slugging percentage in ballpark history among active players with at least 150 at-bats at Petco Park. Among Padres players to have played at least 75% of their games in a single season in the outfi eld, Upton s 26 home runs this season were the seventh-most by an outfi elder in team history and the most since Reggie Sanders also hit 26 homers during the 1999 season even further, among Padres players to have played at least 75% of their games in a single season in left fi eld, Upton s home run total is the third most in club history and the most since Greg Vaughn hit a team-record 50 home runs in Upton hit.343 with six home runs, 23 RBI and nine stolen bases during the month of May, joining Ryan Klesko as the only player in Padres franchise history to hit six or more homers and steal nine or more bases in a single month during the season (Klesko also did so in May of 2001). Justin Upton recorded his 600th career RBI with his single on August 21st, making him the 61st active player to reach that milestone...additionally, having reached the plateau at 27 years and 361 days old, he is one of seven active players to reach the 600 RBI mark before turning 28. CINCINNATI KID: Upton made his third career All-Star Game appearance on July 14th in Cincinnati as he was named to the NL squad by Bruce Bochy as a manager s selection he entered the game as a defensive replacement in right fi eld in the seventh inning. Upton singled to left fi eld off Kansas City s Wade Davis in his only plate appearance in the eighth inning and immediately stole second base Upton was the 13th different Padres player to get a hit in an All-Star Game (20th time) and first since Adrian Gonzalez did so in Upton was the third player in franchise history, fourth time, to steal a base in an All-Star Game and the fi rst since Tony Gwynn did so in 1989 Gwynn also stole a base in 1984 and Ozzie Smith stole a base in Upton joined Tony Gwynn in 1984 and 1989 as the only players in Padres franchise history to have both a hit and a stolen base in an All-Star Game. Upton was the 10th outfi elder overall in Padres history to represent San Diego in the All-Star Game (also: Tony Gwynn 15 time selection and once as honorary guest, Dave Winfield four time selection for SD, Cito Gaston, Johnny Grubb, Ruppert Jones, Steve Finley, Greg Vaughn and Rondell White). FEAR THE BEARD: Derek Norris posted a.250/.305/.404 (129-for-515) line with 33 doubles, two triples, 14 home runs and 62 RBI in 147 games for the Padres in 2015 among Major Leaguers with 75% or more of their games played as a catcher this season, Norris ranked fi rst in doubles and extra-base hits, sixth in RBI, fourth in hits and ninth in home runs (see chart). In terms of franchise history, Norris 33 doubles were tied for the second-most in franchise history (along with Benito Santiago in 1987) by a player to play 75% or more of their games behind the plate, trailing only Terry Kennedy s 42 in Norris 49 extra-base hits this season were the third-most in franchise history by a player to have played 75% or more of their games as a backstop, trailing only Kennedy s 64 in 1982 and Santiago s 53 in Tallied 11 doubles against the Colorado Rockies this season, a new franchise record for most doubles by a player against a single opponent in a single season additionally, including his two home runs vs. Colorado this season, Norris had 13 extra-base hits vs. the Rockies, tied for the third-most in franchise history vs. a single opponent in a single season and the most since Ryan Klesko had a franchise-record 16 against COL in 2002 (Gyorko and Kemp also had 13 vs. COL in 2015). Among National League relievers, Kimbrel s 87 strikeouts were tied for the fourth-most, trailing only CIN Aroldis Chapman (116), MIL Will Smith (91) and STL Kevin Siegrist (90) his.185 opponents batting average was seventh-best in the National League and 11th-best in the Majors. Kimbrel posted a strikeouts per nine innings ratio (87 SO/59.1 IP), the best mark in Padres franchise history by a relief pitcher. Kimbrel secured his 200th career save on June 8 vs. Atlanta in what was his 318th career game with the save, Kimbrel became the quickest pitcher in Major League history to reach the 200 save plateau, 41 games faster that Jonathan Papelbon, who was the previous record holder with 200 saves in 359 career games he was the 47th player in Major League history to reach the milestone. Kimbrel, who turned 27 on May 28, is the second-youngest pitcher to ever record 200 saves, behind only Francisco Rodriguez, who reached 200 saves at 26 years and 239 days old Huston Street is the next youngest pitcher to reach the 200 save plateau, having done so at 29 years and 52 days old. Recorded at least one strikeout in 21 consecutive games from May 2 - June 26, tied for the second-longest streak by a reliever in team history, trailing only the 26 game streak by Trevor Hoffman from July 14 - September 14, From May 25th until the end of the season, posted a 4-1 record and 28 saves with a 1.44 ERA (7 ER, 43.2 IP) and 64 strikeouts against 17 walks while limiting the opposition to a.155 batting average.

3 SAN DIEGO PADRES 2015 SEASON REVIEW SAN DIEGO S BEST IPK : Over his fi nal 22 starts of the season since the start of June, Ian Kennedy went 7-10 with a 3.41 ERA (49 ER, IP) and 137 strikeouts against 38 walks while limiting opponents to a.248 (122-for-491) batting average posted a 9.53 strikeouts per nine innings in that time, the seventh-best mark in the NL. Since the second half of the season began on July 17, Kennedy posted 98 strikeouts, tied for the fifth-highest total in the NL and tied for the 10th-most in the Majors his 98 punch-outs following the break are tied for the fifth-most in franchise history after the Mid-Summer Classic (see chart). Over a 12-start stretch from June 13 - August 21, Kennedy allowed at least one home run in each start, allowing 14 total in that stretch according to ELIAS, the streak is the longest ever by a Padre pitcher in a single season (previous nine-straight by Josh Geer in 2009 and Sterling Hitchcock in 1998). During that span he went 4-6 with a 2.63 ERA (21 ER, 72.0 IP) per ELIAS, since earned runs were first recorded in both leagues, Kennedy is the only Major League pitcher to have allowed a home run in 11-or-more consecutive games and maintain an ERA less than 3.00 in that time only one other pitcher has had a streak of at least 10 consecutive starts with a homer allowed while posting an ERA under 3.00 during the streak: Roger Clemens for the Boston Red Sox in 1986 (2.64 ERA in 10-straight from 4/11-6/1), the year he won both his first career Cy Young award and his first and only MVP award. HELL S BELLS: The Padres posted a 62-0 record this season when leading after eight innings, one of two National League teams and one of three teams in the Majors to be undefeated when leading after the eighth inning joining the New York Yankees (81-0) and Washington Nationals (74-0). Since the start of 2014, the Padres are when leading after eight innings the club last lost when leading after eight innings on July 5 of last season when they dropped a 5-3 game to the Giants in 10 innings that they were leading 3-2 after eight the Padres have won 93 consecutive games when leading after eight innings, the longest such streak in the National League (STATS, Inc). Since the 2010 season, the Padres own a record (.975) when leading after eight innings, the best record in MLB in that time. PETCO 500: With their 9-3 win on August 21 vs. St. Louis, the Padres secured their 500th all-time win at Petco Park at season s end, the Padres own a (.524) record in their downtown ballpark, which opened for the 2004 season. There have been eight Major League stadiums to open since the start of the 2004 season, including Petco Park (2004), Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia (2004), Busch Stadium in St. Louis (2006), Nationals Park in Washington D.C. (2008), Citi Field in New York (2009), Yankee Stadium in New York (2009), Target Field in Minneapolis (2010) and Marlins Park in Miami (2012) of those eight stadiums, the Padres were second of that group to reach 500 wins in their home ballpark, trailing only the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park (532). COME ONE, COME ALL: The Padres recorded 11 sellouts at Petco Park in 2015, the fourth time in the downtown ballpark s 12-year history of 10-or-more sellouts (2004, 2005, 2007) the 11 sellouts were the most at Petco Park since selling out 16 games during the 2007 season. Four of the top nine attendances in Petco Park history and fi ve of the top 11 happened during the 2015 season (see chart). Over the course of a four-game series with the Giants from April 9-12, the Padres drew 168,171 fans in attendance, the highest-attended series in ballpark history...the previous record was 164,395, set in a four-game set from July 14-17, 2005 vs. Arizona. EVERYTHING IS ALL RIGHT: The Padres used a right-handed starting pitcher in 158 of their 162 games in 2015, including a stretch of 148 consecutive games to start the season the 148 game streak of starting a right-handed pitcher is the longest streak in franchise history, surpassing the previous record of 133 straight games from April 7 - September 2, LHP Robbie Erlin started and ended the streak for the Padres, having made the start in the fi nal game of the 2014 season on September 28 at San Francisco and making his fi rst start of the 2015 season on September 19 at Colorado. Santiago was the fi rst catcher inducted into the Padres Hall of Fame the backstop made his Major League debut for San Diego in 1986 and was unanimously named National League Rookie of the Year in 1987, the fi rst in franchise history. MILES AND MILES OF HEART: The Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association (MLBPAA) named Derek Norris the Padres recipient of the 2015 Heart & Hustle Award the award honors active players who demonstrate a passion for the game of baseball and best embody the values, spirit and tradition of the game. WEATHER REPORT: The Padres experienced their fi rst home game postponement since the 2006 season on July 19 vs. Colorado after the game was postponed due to playing conditions and continued inclement weather in the forecast the game was later played on September 10th the Friars also had a rain delay at Petco Park on May 14th vs. Washington (1 hour, 56 minutes), the first at Petco Park since April 8, July 19th s rainout was just the second in Petco Park history and the first since April 4, 2006, a span of 820 games (nine years, three months and 15 days or 3,393 days). Overall, the postponement was the 17th rainout in San Diego s history and just the third since the 1990 season (April 4, 2006, and May 12, 1998) it was the first rain incident (postponement/suspension/delay) during the month of July in San Diego s baseball history. The delay, due to the postponement, is not an official rain delay however, the delay did last two hours and thirty minutes before it was postponed and would have been the second official rain delay at Petco Park this season (May 14 vs. Washington). There were 25 games at Petco Park between the two rain incidents at Petco Park this season prior to this short stretch, there had been 337 games between rain delays in downtown San Diego. SO HOT IN SO CAL: September 10th s fi rst pitch temperature at Petco Park of 93 degrees was the warmest in ballpark history and the hottest game played in San Diego since another 93 degree day on August 30, 1998 at Qualcomm Stadium. 22 MINOR LEAGUE REVIEW El Paso Chihuahuas (Triple-A) Pacific Coast League, 78-66, 1st/+1.0 Manager: Pat Murphy (3rd season, 5th with org) and Jamie Quirk (1st Season, 2nd with org) Ballpark: Southwestern University Park Finished: 1st place in PCL Pacifi c Southern Season Highlights El Paso clinched the Pacifi c Coast League Pacifi c Southern Division title and made their fi rst playoff appearances in the club s brief two year history, fi nishing 1.0 game ahead of second-place Las Vegas (NYM) the Chihuahuas were the fi rst Padres Triple-A affi liate to make the playoffs since the Portland Beavers did so during the 2004 season El Paso faced-off with Fresno (HOU) in the opening round of the PCL Playoffs (Pacifi c Conference Championship) but dropped the best-of-fi ve series three games to one. Between the regular season and postseason, the Chihuahuas won 79 games, the most by a Padres Triple-A affi liate since the 2004 Portland Beavers won 84 games Pat Murphy was promoted to manage the Major League club on June 17 and was replaced by Jamie Quirk, who had been managing Double-A San Antonio El Paso set a franchise record and ranked third in the PCL with 578,952 in attendance at Southwest University Park. LEAGUE LEADERS OF Nick Schulz led the California League with 67 walks OF Austin Bousfield ranked seventh in the California League with a.361 on-base percentage and tied for ninth with 22 stolen bases.
