Central with a 2.5-game lead the Cubs are the first defending World Champions to be in first place in their division on August 1 in the last six seasons, as the 2011 San Francisco Giants began that month of August with a two-game lead in the N.L. West the Cubs are the first defending World Champions to have a better than twogame lead in their division on August 1 since the 2009 Philadelphia Phillies began that month of August with a six-game lead in the N.L. East. Overall, the Cubs are only the fourth defending World Champion to be in first place in their division on August 1 in the last 15 seasons, joining the 2011 Giants, 2009 Phillies and 2005 Red Sox. Furthermore, the Cleveland Indians wake up on August 1 with a 2.0-game lead in the A.L. Central 2017 marks only the third time in the last 15 seasons that both defending pennant winners have been in first place on August 1 the year after they played in the World Series, joining the 2011 Giants and Rangers and the 2005 Red Sox and Cardinals.
