Despite yesterday s setback, the Cubs 6-1 record since the All-Star break is second-best in baseball, just behind the Pirates 7-1 mark. The Cubs emerged from the All-Star Break with a 6-0 record for only the third time in franchise history and for the first time in 82 years (6-0 in 1935) the only one other time the team accomplished this feat was a 7-0 start in This is the second of a five-game homestand against the Cardinals (0-1) and White Sox (two games, July 24-25) this is the second day of a stretch in which the Cubs play 18 of 29 games at Wrigley Field through August 20. Moreover, this is day two of an 18-day stretch without a trip to the airport, as the next road trip features two games at the White Sox and three games in Milwaukee, a bus ride, followed by a six-game homestand August 1-6. WHERE THERE S A WILL: WIllson Contreras yesterday belted his 14th homer of the season, the most for any N.L. catcher and tied for second-most among all major league backstops with the Yankees Gary Sanchez Kansas City s Salvador Perez leads all catchers with 18 home runs this season. Contreras 26 career homers are the most by a Cubs catcher in his first two major league campaigns, surpassing the 22 hit by Cal Neeman in the seasons. Since making his debut on June 17 of last year, Contreras has produced an.835 OPS that s the third-highest of any N.L. catcher behind the Dodgers Yasmani Grandal (.855) and the Giants Buster Posey (.849). IT S A START: Cubs starting pitchers have posted a 2.14 ERA (10 ER/42.0 IP) while going 5-0 with a.180 opposing batting average in the first seven games since the All-Star break the 2.14 ERA and.180 average against lead all major league starting rotations in the early going of the season s second half.
