Last evening marked the second time Hendricks has tossed at least 7.0 shutout innings in a post-season game (7.1 shutout IP in game six of the 2016 NLCS) Elias notes the only other pitcher in Cubs history with two post-season games in which he threw at least 7.0 shutout IP is Mordecai Three Finger Brown, who had three such games, one each in the 1906, 1907 and 1908 World Series. Chicago last night was held hitless through five innings by Stephen Strasburg it marked the fourth time in franchise history that the Cubs were held without a hit through five innings in a playoff game, and the first time in nearly 109 years that Chicago went on to win the contest it was first done on Oct. 11, 1908 in game two of the World Series vs. the Tigers at the West Side Grounds thanks to Ed Hartig for his research assistance. HERE WE ARE: The Chicago Cubs, who won the N.L. Central Division for the secondstraight season, tonight play game two of the National League Division Series against the Washington Nationals Chicago aims to become the first franchise to repeat as World Series champions since the New York Yankees won three-straight World Series titles from The Cubs finished the regular season with a record reached 92 regular season victories for the third-straight campaign and for the 19th time in franchise history dating to The Cubs are the first defending World Series champions to win their division the next season, and reach 90 wins while doing so, since the 2009 Philadelphia Phillies went and won the N.L. East by six games. In fact, besides this year s Cubs and the 2009 Phillies, the only other defending World Champion to win their division the following season in the last 15 years was the 2002 Arizona Diamondbacks, who won the N.L. Furthermore, the Cubs are the first defending World Champions to even make the playoffs the next season since the 2012 Cardinals secured a Wild Card spot the Cubs have snapped a four-year drought in which the defending World Series champion failed to qualify for postseason the following year. BREAKING UP: The Cubs posted a (.662) record following the All-Star Break, the best mark in the N.L. and trailing only Cleveland (55-20,.733) Chicago ranked second in the majors with a +127 run differential following the Break, trailing only Cleveland (+180). Chicago led the majors with 423 runs scored in 74 games following the All-Star Break, making that the second-most prolific second half in franchise history since the All-Star Game began in 1933 the 1935 Cubs plated 487 runs in 82 games after the Break. JUST WIN, BABY: The Cubs have 292 regular season victories since the start of the 2015 season, marking the winningest three-season span for the franchise in over 100 years the franchise last won more games in a three-season span from (300 victories). 800 RUNS AND COUNTING: With 822 runs scored this season, the Cubs surpassed 800 runs for the second season in a row (808 runs in 2016) and just the 10th time in their last 118 seasons starting in 1900 the Cubs have reached 800 runs in consecutive campaigns for the first time in more than 85 years, as the Cubs last did so in three-straight seasons from , also the only other occasion in which the Cubs scored at least 800 runs in two-straight seasons starting in KB AT THE DISH: Per Fangraphs, Kris Bryant finished third in the National League with a 6.7 WAR this season, trailing only Anthony Rendon (6.9) and Giancarlo Stanton (6.9). Bryant s 111 runs scored ranked fifth in the N.L. he s just the 12th Cub since 1913 to record multiple 100-run seasons, and the first since Sammy Sosa did so five times from Bryant led the team with 95 walks, third-most in the N.L. (teammate Anthony Rizzo was fifth with 91), while Bryants s.409 on-base percentage ranked fourth Bryant is the first Cub ever to reach 25 home runs in each of his first three major league campaigns. RIZZO HE RAKES: Anthony Rizzo has reached 109 RBI this season, fifth-most in the N.L. and the most by any left-handed hitter in the majors the 109 RBI tie his career-high done just last season. Rizzo this season reached 30 doubles, 30 homers and 100 RBI for the third-straight campaign, this year doing so before Labor Day he s only the fourth Cub ever to reach those thresholds in at least three seasons, joining Hack Wilson (4 times, ), Billy Williams (3 times, 1965, 1970, 1972) and Sammy Sosa (3 times, 1997, ) Rizzo and Wilson are the lone Cubs to do so in at least three-straight seasons. GLOVE LOVE: Anthony Rizzo finished the regular season with a career-high 138-game errorless streak at first base dating to April 25, surpassing Hall of Famer Ernie Banks and his 126-game errorless run at first base spanning seasons as the longest by a Cubs first baseman since at least the live ball era started in 1920 thanks to Ed Hartig for his research assistance. HOMER HAPPY: Chicago hit 223 home runs in 2017, the second-highest single-season total in franchise history (235 homers in 2004) the team s 106 blasts in the second half of the season ranked second in the N.L. behind Arizona (107). The Cubs set a franchise mark with six players with at least 20 homers: Javier Báez, Kris Bryant, Willson Contreras, Ian Happ, Anthony Rizzo and Kyle Schwarber additionally, the team set a major league record with five 20-homer seasons by players in their age 25 or younger season (Báez, Bryant, Contreras, Happ and Schwarber).
