The previous time the Cubs followed a skid of at least six-straight games with at least five victories was in 2013 (0-6, May then 5-0, May 26-31). Last night s setback also snapped Chicago s eight-game home winning streak dating to May 23 it was the team s longest winning streak at Wrigley Field since a nine-game winning streak last August 16-September 2. Following this four-game set, the Cubs on Monday embark on a stretch in which 17 of 20 games through July 2 are on the road that begins with a six-game trip at the Mets (three games starting Monday) and at the Pirates (three games beginning June 16). Monday also begins a stretch in which 21 of Chicago s next 24 games are outside its own division. THE CONFINES HAVE BEEN FRIENDLY: Since the start of last season, Jon Lester is 13-2 with a 1.87 ERA (31 ER/149.1 IP) in 22 starts at Wrigley Field that 1.87 home ERA is second-lowest among active pitchers, surpassed only by the Dodgers Clayton Kershaw (1.60 ERA) Cubs teammate Kyle Hendricks is third in that span (2.04). Carl Edwards Jr. has limited opponents to a.085 average (6-for-71), the best mark among all major league relievers. DYNAMIC DUO: Wade Davis (0.89 ERA) and Carl Edwards Jr. (0.79 ERA) are one of two relief duos to sport ERAs of 1.00 or lower with at least 15.0 IP this season the Yankees Dellin Betances (0.49 ERA) and Chasen Shreve (0.57 ERA) have also turned the trick. MLB s Statcast notes that Edwards is limiting hitters to an average exit velocity of just 78.7 miles per hour on batted balls, the lowest mark among major league pitchers (min. 30 batted balls). FLEXING SOME MUSCLE: Beginning with the nightcap of May 9 s twinbill in Colorado, the Cubs have hit 40 home runs in their last 26 games, with the 40 blasts in that span ranking tied for second with Arizona Cincinnati leads with 41 homers. According to Fangraphs, the Cubs have received 48 homers this season from players age 25 or younger that s by far the most in the majors, as the Rangers are second with 33 homers from players 25 or younger. Anthony Rizzo has struck out just twice in his last 72 plate appearances spanning his last 17 games since May 21 he s walked nine times in that span with a.417 on-base percentage.
