With 122 games down, the Cubs have completed three quarters of their season on pace for 104 wins. STOP, HAMMEL TIME: Jason Hammel enters today s outing a perfect 6 0 with a 0.95 ERA (4 ER/38.0 IP) in six starts since the All Star Break, the lowest ERA of any pitcher in baseball and one of only two pitchers with at least six wins and no losses in this span, joining Kansas City s Danny Duffy (also 6 0) teammate Kyle Hendricks (1.35 ERA) has the second lowest mark in all of baseball since the Break. In August, Hammel is 3 0 with 20.0 scoreless innings, limiting foes to a.149 batting average, a.230 on base percentage and a.149 slugging percentage, good for a.379 OPS against. Overall this season, Hammel has already set a career high with 13 wins, blowing past his previous career bests of 10 wins in 2009 and 2010 with Colorado and last year with the Cubs. ALSO SOLID AT THE DISH: Jason Hammel also enters today s outing with 14 base hits, tied with Arizona s Patrick Corbin for most hits among pitchers this season, one ahead of teammate Jake Arrieta but Arrieta does lead all big league pitchers with a.749 OPS this year. K BOOOOOM: Including his estimated 469 foot, three run blast last night, Kris Bryant now has 57 home runs in the first two seasons of his career, a franchise record and already tied for the 12th most home runs in major league history for a player s first two seasons he is two homers shy of cracking the top 10 Joe DiMaggio holds the all time record with 75 homers over his first two campaigns. Bryant has joined Ernie Banks as the only two players in franchise history to reach 30 homers in either their first or second big league season Banks hit 44 homers in 1955 as a sophomore after clubbing 19 homers as a rookie in 1954 Banks also had two home runs in 1953 but retained rookie status the next year. Bryant also is just the fifth Cub ever to reach 30 homers in his age 24 season, joining Banks, Ron Santo (1964), Sammy Sosa (1993) and Anthony Rizzo (2014). START ME UP: Cubs starting pitchers are 12 0 with a 1.50 ERA (20 ER/119.2 IP) in 18 games in August, totaling 14 quality starts. Overall, Cubs starting pitchers have not endured a loss since July 30, a stretch of 19 straight outings, their longest stretch without a loss since going 20 games from August 30 Sept. 19, 2015 thanks to Elias. CUBS RECORD 2016 Overall: At Wrigley Field: On the Road: April: May: June July August All Time Since 1876:... 10,686 10,175 At Wrigley Field (since 1916):...4,206 3,705 Leading Entering 6th: Tied Entering 6th: Trailing Entering 6th: Leading Entering 7th: Tied Entering 7th: Trailing Entering 7th: Leading Entering 8th: Tied Entering 8th: Trailing Entering 8th: Leading Entering 9th: Tied Entering 9th: Trailing Entering 9th: Scoring First: One Run Games: Two Run Games: Extra Inning Games: Scoring Four or More: Scoring Fewer Than Four: Out Hitting Opponents: Hit Totals Equal: Out Hit by Opponents: Hit at Least One HR: Hit Two or More HR: Playing Errorless Ball: Committing at Least One Error: THAT S A RELIEF: Even after utilizing 4.2 innings from their bullpen/trevor Cahill last night, Cubs relievers have still thrown by far the fewest innings of any bullpen in the National League with innings pitched, 6.1 innings ahead of next closest Washington and its relief innings only Toronto has thrown fewer relief innings than the Cubs, barely ahead at innings. YOU GO, WE GO: Dexter Fowler has reached safely in 21 of his 26 games since returning from the D.L. with a hamstring strain, July 22 he has scored a run in 16 of those 26 games the Cubs are when he reaches base safely at least twice in a game ironically, the team is also when Fowler scores at least one run. Including another base hit last night, Fowler is now batting.411 with seven doubles, a triple, six home runs, a.488 on base percentage and a.781 slugging percentage when leading off a game this season hat tip to Comcast SportsNet Chicago s Christopher Kamka for this nugget. WHAT S THE DIFFERENCE?: Chicago s +215 run differential is by far the highest in the majors Washington is second at +146, 69 runs behind the Cubs the Cubs have allowed the fewest runs in the majors (412) while plating 627 runs, third most in the majors behind Boston (672) and Colorado (649). IN AWE OF AUGUST: The Cubs are 15 3 in August, good for a.833 winning percentage the Cubs best August in franchise history occurred in 1932 when the club went 22 6 (.786). Chicago began the month of August 10 0, marking just the second time the team started a month with at least 10 straight wins in June of 1885, the team began the month 18 0 and finished that June with a 21 2 mark thanks to Ed Hartig for his research assistance. RUNNING AWAY WITH IT: Kris Bryant has 98 runs scored this season, by far the most in the National League (Nolan Arenado is next closest with 88 runs) and tied with Boston s Mookie Betts for most in the majors Bryant is on pace for 130 runs this year. CAN T STOP, WON T STOP: The Cubs have now scored at least three runs in each of their last 19 games according to Elias, that s the second longest streak of scoring three or more runs in consecutive games this season, as they just moved past their own 18 game streak (April 20 May 11) and are still seeking to reach a 28 game stretch by the Orioles (June 1 30). LEADING THE WAY: Kyle Hendricks woke up this morning with the same 2.16 ERA, except now he officially leads all of baseball since Clayton Kershaw (1.79 ERA) no longer qualifies for league leader status having not thrown enough innings. Hendricks has allowed three or fewer earned runs in each of his last 16 starts dating to May 22 (1.67 ERA) is the fourth Cubs starting pitcher in the last 30 years to allow three earned runs or fewer in 16 straight starts, joining Jake Arrieta (29, ), Mike Morgan (27, 1992) and Frank Castillo (23, ).
