The Lady Flames (2-18) and Camels (14-13) will conclude the series with a single game on Saturday at 1 p.m. This weekend will mark the first home games, and first conference contests, for Liberty under first-year head coach Dot Richardson. The Lady Flames are 19-9 all-time in home openers, including 14-6 during the NCAA Division I era. Liberty has posted a 7-13 record in Big South-opening games. Flames at a Glance The Lady Flames enter the weekend winless in their last 13 games. Most recently, Liberty posted an 0-3 record at the Courtyard Marriott Tournament, where they faced No. 20/21 Tulsa, defending national champion, No. 19/13 Oklahoma and Western Illinois. Senior Katie Zavodny leads Liberty with a.302 average and 13 runs scored, ranking in the top 20 nationally with 14 stolen bases. Kelby Allen (.278) has posted a team-best five doubles, two homers, nine RBIs and.481 slugging percentage. Hanna Nichols (.286) and Sammi Shivock (.250) have both driven in five runs. Senior RHP Alyssa DiMartino (1-7, 4.72 ERA) allowed just one earned run through her first five appearances. Sophomore RHP Annah Jo Brittingham (1-10) pitched her team-best fifth complete game on Sunday against Western Illinois. Katie Baker is 6-5 with a 2.88 ERA Campbell is 12-2 all-time against Liberty, and the Camels have won each of the last six meetings. The Camels have posted a 6-1 record versus the Lady Flames since rejoining the Big South in Liberty s last win over Campbell came on April 27, 2012, as the Lady Flames built a 7-0 lead behind a pair of homers before holding on for a 7-6 win. Liberty vs. Campbell Recap Campbell won all four meetings against Liberty in 2013, with three of the four games being won by an identical, 4-3, score. During game one on March 29 at Campbell, Liberty took a 3-2 lead during the top of the fifth inning, before Campbell rallied with two tallies in the fifth to win, 4-3. Liberty battled back from a 3-0 deficit to tie Campbell, 3-3, in game two, but Amanda Daw hit a walk-off single to give Campbell its second 4-3 win of the day. Sammi Shivock gave Liberty a quick 1-0 lead over Campbell on March 30, before the hosts scored the next five runs, to earn the 5-2 win and series sweep. The Lady Flames and Camels then met in the second round of the 2013 Big South Softball Championship, on May 10. Liberty led, 3-1, heading to the bottom of the sixth, but a three-run sixth stanza led the Camels to a 4-3 win. Shivock batted.692 with a double, three homers and four RBIs against Campbell last year, while Kelby Allen hit.455 and Hanna Nichols batted.364 versus the Camels in Opening Remarks Liberty is 19-9 all-time in home openers, and 14-6 when opening the home schedule during the NCAA Division I era (since 1994). Last year, Liberty dropped its home opener, 10-8, to Hampton on Feb. 27, tying for the earliest home opener in program history. In the nightcap, Liberty downed the eventual MEAC champion Pirates, 10-1, behind a pair of four-run innings and a four-hitter by Chandler Ball. The Lady Flames last home-opening win came on March 23, 2010, a 9-1 win over Radford. That win over Radford was Liberty s fifth straight home-opening triumph. Prior to the game, first-year head coach Dot Richardson threw out a ceremonial first pitch, drawing a standing ovation from the crowd at Oklahoma s Marita Hynes Stadium. Liberty then made a quick strike against the Sooners, with a three-run blast by Kelby Allen giving the Lady Flames a 3-0 lead over the defending champs in the first inning. Oklahoma scored the next 18 runs, on the way to an 18-3, five-inning victory over Liberty. Efficient Weekend Senior Sammi Shivock reached base in six out of her seven plate appearances during Liberty s three-game stint at the Courtyard Marriott Tournament. After going 2-for-2 against No. 20/21 Tulsa on Friday, she drew three walks against Western Illinois, Sunday. Shivock is now the 11th player in program history to draw 50 or more career walks. Her three walks against Western Illinois were the most by a Lady Flame since Amber Donovan had three walks on March 11, 2012 versus Monmouth. All-Around Game Sophomore pitcher Annah Jo Brittingham pitched a complete game on Sunday, in a 5-0 setback to Western Illinois. In addition to her six innings pitched, she batted 2-for-3 to lead the Lady Flames in hits. Brittingham became the first Lady Flames pitcher to record a multiple-hit game while pitching the full contest since Sarah Swor went 4-for-4 in an 11-2 win over Hampton, April 13, During that game, Swor allowed two runs on four hits with 11 strikeouts. Almost There With her next RBI, the 100th of her career, senior Sammi Shivock will enter elite company at Liberty. Shivock has scored 105 career runs and driven in 99. Only three Liberty players all-time have recorded both 100 runs and 100 RBIs, in Jessica Moore ( ), Ashley Williams ( ) and Shivock s former teammate, Kelly Strickland ( ). Williams was a four-time all-conference player, while Moore and Strickland were both Easton Fastpitch All-Americans during their time at Liberty. That s a First The Lady Flames downed Norfolk State, 5-1, Feb. 15, as first-year head coach Dot Richardson picked up her first career coaching victory. Senior Katie Zavodny went 3-for-3, tied the program single-game record with four runs scored, stole two bases, and hit an inside-the-park home run, her first career homer. Sophomore Annah Jo Brittingham tossed a complete-game four-hitter, allowing just one run to the Spartans. Lady Flames Run Away With 12-0 Win Over UMBC Liberty stole a season-high seven bases in a 12-0 win against UMBC, Feb. 15, led by two swipes from Katie Zavodny. The last time the Lady Flames posted seven steals was March 19, 2002, against Fairleigh Dickinson. Hanna Nichols went 4-for-4 against UMBC, with a career-best four RBIs, while Blair Lawrence notched a career-high three hits. The Lady Flames scored nine runs in the fifth inning to put the game away. New Season The beginning of the conference season provides every team with a new beginning. Last season, Liberty went 8-16 in Big South play, but several players showed excellent production. Katie Zavodny hit.416 with 13 stolen bases and 21 runs scored during conference play last year, while Kelby Allen batted.397 with five homers and 20 RBIs. Hanna Nichols held a.360 batting average in league play, followed by Kassidy McCoy, at.299. Sammi Shivock (.284) drove in 21 runs. Chandler Ball tossed a complete-game shutout on April 3, 2013 versus Radford. She then posted a 1-2 record with a 2.67 ERA during the Big South tournament, facing the top three seeds in the conference.

(2/22) 4 7 New Era Two-time Olympic Gold medalist Dot Richardson was named the fifth head coach in the history of the Lady Flames softball program on July 19, Richardson helped Team USA win two Olympic Gold medals, along with Gold at five Pan American Games and four World Championships. Among her many honors, Richardson was named the 1980 s NCAA Player of the Decade. She is enshrined in the ASA Hall of Fame and UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame. Zavodny has recorded 93 steals in her career, a number which ranks fourth in Big South history. Last season, Zavodny swiped a program single-season record 41 bases. Also in 2013, she set a new single-game record for hits (5, twice), tied the Liberty record with six at bats at CSU, and tied Alycia Stevens record with a 23-game hitting streak. 3 Company Sophomore Katie Han went 3-for-3 at Charlotte on Feb. 28, setting a new career high for hits. She became the ninth current Lady Flame with at least one career three-hit ballgame. The other current Liberty players to post a three-hit game in their career are: Katie Zavodny (15), Sammi Shivock (10), Kelby Allen (5), Hanna Nichols (3), Holly Seiz (2), Kassidy McCoy (2), Blair Lawrence and Grace Nordan. 100 Club On Feb. 15, Katie Zavodny became the 11th player in program history to score 100 or more career runs. She is currently in seventh place with 107 career runs scored, while Sammi Shivock is ranked eighth, with 105. The last time that two active Liberty players were members of the 100-run club was 2007, when Jessica Moore and Dawn Jeffs had both amassed 100 or more career runs. Moving On Up Along with Katie Zavodny s career stolen bases record, Sammi Shivock and Chandler Ball are also climbing Liberty s top 10 career lists. Shivock is ranked seventh all-time at Liberty with 99 career RBIs. Shivock is currently tied for eighth with 23 career homers. Ball, a junior, ranks 10th all-time at Liberty with 207 career strikeouts. Shutting the Door When Alyssa DiMartino tossed a seven-hit shutout against UMBC on Feb. 15, she became the third active Lady Flame with at least one career complete-game shutout. Last year, both Annah Jo Brittingham (two-hitter versus Manhattan, March 2) and Chandler Ball (five-hitter against Radford, April 3) fashioned shutouts. Prior to this year, the last time the Lady Flames had three pitchers on staff with at least one career shutout was 2010, when Katrina Johnson, Tiffani Smith and Katie Warrington all registered shutouts. And the Award Goes To... Last season, Katie Zavodny was named to the NFCA All-Mid-Atlantic Region first team, while Sammi Shivock earned second team all-region honors. It marked the second time in the last three years in which two Lady Flames were named to the NFCA All-Region team, as Ashley Bensinger and Kelly Strickland both drew second team mention in Zavodny led the team with a.384 batting average and tied for second place in the nation with a program single-season record 41 stolen bases.
