This is the first meeting between the two schools since a 13-5 USM victory ion April 3, 2007, at Pete Taylor Park. Southern Miss has won the last nine contests in the series and are 19-5 against the Colonels in Hattiesburg. The Golden Eagles won the first game of the series played back on April 11, 1960, in a 2-1 decision. Homestand: This three-game series starts a string of playing eight of the first nine games at home over the month of February. The only road tilt is a Feb. 22 meeting at Louisiana-Monroe. Can t Tell These Guys Without a Scorecard: Southern Miss will feature many new faces in the lineup in 2012 as they look to replace five position-player starters, its weekend rotation and closer spot heading into the new year. Only 15 of the Golden Eagles on this year s 34-man roster saw any action last season. The roster sports 22 underclassmen, including six sophomores and 16 freshman (either true or redshirt). Garnering a Part of the 2011 Regular Season Title: With its 7-3 decision over Rice on the final day of the regular season, Southern Miss captured a share of the 2011 Conference USA regular-season title. It was their second C-USA regular-season championship and first since Finishing Over 80 Again: For the third straight season, Southern Miss reached the 80-plateau in double plays finishing the 2011 campaign with 81. The Golden Eagles have led the country in double plays in each of the last three years, after compiling a nation s best 83 in 2009 and then again with a school-record 84 in The Golden Eagles turned three or more double plays in 11 contests last season, including a season-best four against East Carolina on April 30. Year Two Complete: The program finished its second season under coach Scott Berry, who has led the Golden Eagles to a record over his two seasons as well as leading them to their ninth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. Berry has led the Golden Eagles to two C-USA Championships - a share of the regular-season crown in 2011 and the 2010 C-USA Tournament crown, beating Rice 7-4 in the championship game. Berry ascended to the top spot in the program after serving as an assistant coach. He was the top assistant during the team s run to the 2009 College World Series. He reached the 50-win plateau (77 games) quicker than any previous Southern Miss baseball coach in history with its 4-3, 15-inning victory over Rhode Island on March 19. He is the only second-year Golden Eagle baseball coach to win a league championship, which earned him C-USA Coach of the Year honors. Highly-Touted Recruiting Class: The 2012 Southern Miss recruiting class got high marks earned a No. 3 ranking by Baseball America and a No. 13 by Collegiate Baseball, which includes freshmen Connor Barron (Third Round/Florida Marlins/102nd pick), Bradley Roney (18th Round/Baltimore Orioles/545th pick), Taylor Nunez (19th Round/Pittsburgh Pirates/572nd pick) and Mason Robbins (20th Round/New York Mets/ 612th pick). Baseball America Chooses Two for Top 50 Freshmen: In the Baseball America college preseason edition, both Connor Barron and Mason Robbins were chosen among the Top 50 freshmen in the country. Barron was tabbed No. 2, while Robbins earned a No. 17 selection. Barron and Robbins, along with Bradley Roney and Taylor Nunez also were picked at four of the Top 10 newcomers in Conference USA in Winning Games: The Southern Miss program has captured at least 36 victories since dating back to the 2002 campaign, including 40 or more wins four times, including a school-record 47 in 2003 which was also the only year the school hosted an NCAA Baseball Regional. NCAA Tournament History: The Golden Eagles made their 12th NCAA Tournament appearance, including their ninth in a row when they traveled to Atlanta, Ga., and Russ Chandler Stadium. The Golden Eagles now are (.390) in NCAA Tournament play. They have won one regional, one super regional and have appeared in the College World Series once. All three of those events came during the 2009 campaign.
