2 ABOUT BIKE MS: RIDE THE RIVERSIDE Bike MS is the oldest charity ride in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. In its 31st year, Bike MS: Ride the Riverside 2013 is epected to host more than 1,200 cyclists and 300 volunteers for a weekend-long celebration. Bike MS: Ride the Riverside will take place at National Harbor, just outside D.C., and will raise $1 million towards a world free of multiple sclerosis. Cyclists have a variety of route options ranging from 30 to 150 miles, one day or two. The fully supported ride offers stocked rest stops, bicycle mechanics, rider assistance whenever necessary, great food, beverages, massages, enthusiastic volunteers, live music, and more. SATURDAY, JUNE 8, 2013 Route options: 30, 60 or 100 miles SUNDAY, JUNE 9, 2013 Route option: 50 miles ABOUT BIKE MS NATIONWIDE Established in 1980, the National MS Society s Bike MS is the premier fundraising cycling series in the nation. In 2008, a handful of partners and employees formed a team to participate in the MS ride. Just four years later, our team has grown to over 60 participants, including family and friends. One of KPMG s core values is giving back to our communities. Bike MS comes in a variety of formats including one-day rides, two-day rides, and cross-state happenings. More than just a fundraising event, Bike MS is a challenge. The sense of accomplishment that cyclists feel as they cross the finish line can only be matched by the difference they are making in the lives of more than 400,000 Americans with MS and their loved ones who live with this unpredictable disease. Over 100,000 people ride each year, from corporate leaders to friends and neighbors. These cyclists secure pledges from more than two million contributors. Last year, cyclists raised nearly $85 million to support MS research and programs delivered by the Society s 50-state network of chapters. Since the series began as one ride in Minnesota in 1980, cyclists have raised over $1 billion to support MS. 10 WHAT IS MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS? Multiple sclerosis (MS) interrupts the flow of information from the brain to the body and stops people from moving. Every hour in the United States, someone is newly diagnosed with MS, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity, and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with more than twice as many women as men contracting the disease. MS affects more than 400,000 people in the United States, and 2.5 million worldwide. MS is the #1 disabling disease among young adults in the United States. Multiple sclerosis stops people from moving. We eist to make sure it doesn t. The National MS Society believes that moving is not just something you can or can t do, but rather is who you are. This is why we host events like Bike MS to raise funds for research, as well as comprehensive programs and services for people with MS moving closer to a world free of MS.
