1 Gure Club eko Berriak Next Basque Club Meeting Date: Friday, June 1 Time: June 2018 Club Website: Twitter & 7:00 pm Living Traditions Festival For the thirty-third time, the Basque Club of Utah participated in the 33 rd annual Living Traditions Festival in downtown Salt Lake City. Place: Topics: Mary & Jean s home 449 Shamrock Drive Murray, Utah Report on the Mus Tournament and the Living Traditions Festival. We will be planning for the rest of the year. Bring your favorite snack and plan to attend! Thank you to all who helped make churro dough and Croquetas, who loaded and unloaded the truck, worked at the booth and cleaned all the equipment. Here is a note from Catherine: Thank you to everyone who participated in any way to make our Living Traditions booth a great success! The weather was beautiful and the festival was a lot of fun! The Basque Club of Utah dancers, Utah ko Triskalariak, gave another outstanding performance. Thanks to Cirbie Sangroniz and all of the dancers and musicians for your hard work and dedication. It really showed in your performance. Come to the meeting on June 1 to find out how much money we made. Thanks again to everyone who made the event a success. Mass will be at noon. There will be Basque Food for purchase or you can bring your own food. There will also be kids games and a horse shoe tournament. The Utah ko Triskalariak will be performing. 2 Club Member Wins Nomination Basque Club of Utah member, James Singer won the Democratic Party nomination for the third congressional district. He was able to avoid a primary and won the nomination at the state convention. Mus News The club recently held their annual mus tournament. Congratulations to Monique Flesher and Lisa Carricaburu who won the club mus tournament. You may read about his candidacy here: Gaztemundu 2018 The Counsel of the Basque Government approved the 2018 Gaztemundu Program. This year s edition is scheduled for September 1 16 and is dedicated to Basque dance. Javier Guerricabeitia and Javier Zamora came in second. Gaztemundu is a training program that is open to individuals between the ages of 18 and 35 who are members of recognized Basque clubs all over the world. Over the two weeks, they will also travel, and learn more about the country of their ancestors. You must apply by June 18. Club Participates in Cultural Fair The Basque Club of Utah had a table at the Kearns- Saint Ann Catholic School fourth annual cultural fair on May 11. Zach Cendagorta and Anthony Aguerre came in last place. We sold chorizos, gateau Basque and rice pudding. Jean and Jean Jules Flesher played music for the attendees. All proceeds were donated to the school. Monique and Lisa will be going to Homedale, ID to play in the NABO tournament which will be held on June 2nd. Thank you to John and Jo-Michele Cendagorta for hosting the tournament at their home. 2

3 NEWS Congratulations to: Anna Shum, daughter of Stacey Larrinaga, who graduated from Judge Memorial High School as Valedictorian. She will be attending Dartmouth College in the fall. Sophie Barajas, who graduated from Judge Memorial High School. She will be attending the University of San Francisco in the fall. Brittany and Mike Johnson, who are expecting twin boys. Monique Flesher and Lisa Carricaburu, who won the club mus tournament. Get Well to: Jean Gaztambide, who is recovering from a terrible fall. Extra Thanks to: Everyone who helped at the Living Traditions Festival. The Utah ko Triskalariak for their performance at the Living Traditions Festival. Everyone loved the performance. Condolences to: Trudy Guerricabeitia and family, on the passing of her step father. Basque Film Series Continues The Basque Film series is going strong. We have had a good turnout. The movie nights have been a lot of fun. Join your club members for the next one! We will be showing two films in the next couple of months. Handia on June 21 and Aupa Etxebeste on July 12. Handia - Handia is a film directed by Aitor Arregi and Jon Garaño.The film is based on the life of Miguel Joaquín Eleizegui Arteaga ( ) who suffered from gigantism and was known as the Giant from Altzo. At the 32nd Goya Awards (Spain s Oscars), the film won ten awards, including Best Original Screenplay, Best New Actor (Eneko Sagardoy), and Best Original Score (Pascal Gaigne). Summary: In 1843, crippled Martin returns from war to his Basque hometown and finds his brother has grown into a giant, which they turn into a circus act. Aupa Etxebeste Directed by Asier Altuna and Telmo Esnal. Summary: Patricio Etxebeste owns a beret-making factory. An important local figure, he is standing for mayor in the upcoming elections. What nobody knows is that he is completely ruined and can t even pay for his yearly holiday. The films will be the 2nd Thursday of each month. The dates and times are posted on Facebook and we would like for people to RSVP. 3
