1 CVAC NEWSLETTER November 2016 Notes From Ron Holiday Trunk Show & Wine Tasting Friday, November 18 The CVAC Holiday Trunk Show has become a great pre-holiday get-together for our members and one of the most popular wine tasting events. Taste delicious food by our very own Chef Moises, sip holiday wines and liquors to get you in the spirit and enjoy shopping our local vendor s wares. World Team Tennis Turkey Tournament Saturday, November 19 For a fun and social tennis gathering with lots of member spirit and country pride you don t need to look any further then CVAC. I always like to see the various teams coming out to really represent their respective countries from highlighting their flags to chants to dressing in their country s colors. I can t wait what this year will bring. CVAC 3rd Annual Turkey Trot Thursday, November 24 There is no better way to get the whole family up early on a holiday then our Turkey Trot. We offer something for everyone, from the serious runners to families with strollers and pets. All proceeds are going to a great cause--the Monterey County Food Bank! You ll also get your very own Turkey Trot shirt. They are becoming a collector s item and it is always great to see them worn around CVAC. Prime & Wine Friday, November 11 Come out for a special evening with fellow members and enjoy Chef Moises s Prime & Wine Night. Chef will serve a choice of Soup or Salad; 10oz cut Prime Rib with seasonal vegetables and mashed potatoes, dessert and a glass of wine for only $ Please see the CVAC Concierge to reserve your spot. Seating is limited. November marks the beginning of the Holiday Season and the time to reflect on everything we are most grateful for. With our busy lives and the crazy and stressful holiday season, it is very important to stop and take a moment to reflect on what is really important in life. Last year, I asked everyone to create a Thankful List, which included a minimum of 20 things you are thankful for. If you are planning to have a dinner with family and/or friends on Thanksgiving, try having them do this little exercise too and maybe even share one or two things on the Thankful List out loud at the dinner table. It will be interesting and eye opening for everyone. I am also a firm believer in how little things mean a lot and this is a great example of one of those moments. Please try this and share with me how it went. Speaking about being thankful, I am pleased and excited to report that Carmel Valley Athletic Club was selected by the readers of the Carmel Pine Cone for the 2016 Golden Pine Cone Award as Best Health & Fitness Club and Donna Ferguson who works at Refuge was voted Best Massage Therapist. Thank you to everyone who voted and thank you for making CVAC the special place that it is. Please congratulate Donna the next time you see her or ask for her when you schedule your next Refuge massage. Did you know that Refuge is celebrating its 5th Anniversary this month? It opened on 11/11/11. We d like to send a shout out to all our members for their support over the years. If you have not heard or taken advantage of our All- Inclusive membership which gets you monthly free access to Refuge, please feel free to come in to talk to me and get more information. November is also the month of change besides the leaves changing color, temperature dropping and the rain coming, November marks a change in our clocks as well. On November 6th we fall back, which means it ll get darker quicker. This also means that our front tennis courts will be higher in demand as our Junior Tennis Academy utilizes the lighted courts till 6pm. Our Café will also close earlier. Please plan accordingly by reserving your tennis courts and placing your order with Chef Moises before 3pm. During the winter months the cafe will be closed on Sundays. October was another month with some outstanding weather and so much going on around the club with our Party in Pink, Teeth Whitening, Self Defense session, Monster Mash Zumba Bash, Mummy s Night Out, and Pumpkin Carving Contest. October brought something for everyone and there is no exception for the month of November. Check out this newsletter to read about what wonderful events all of our Directors have planned and programmed for you this month and check out the sidebar for a quick overview of our upcoming events.

2 CVAC NEWSLETTER November 2016 Notes From Ron Refuge is celebrating 5 Years! It is hard to believe that Refuge is 5 years old already. What is most rewarding for us is seeing our members, locals and tourists leaving Refuge so relaxed and appreciative. Who would have ever known that people would seek out a place to disconnect from electronics and find a sanctuary in silence? Scott McKay was a man who understood this. He was a visionary when he thought of his brainchild Refuge a decade ago before internet and technology took hold of our lives. He felt Americans were ready to immerse themselves in the culture, relaxation, and health benefits of Asian and European hydrothermal techniques, which have been done for hundreds of years. And wow, how right he was! Thank you to everyone for all your support over the last 5 years. We hope to continue the story of health and wellness for the mind, body and soul for decades to come. As a thank you to all our members we are offering 5 days of a 2 for 1 Admissions. On each Wednesday in November--members will be able to bring in a guest for free. This is a great opportunity to introduce someone to experience the wonderful world of Refuge. Also if you have not signed up to take advantage of our All-Inclusive CVAC membership which gives you monthly access to Refuge, please give me a call. CVAC Member Survey I am sorry for the delay of getting our member survey out to you last month. Please be on the lookout for it this month. Our survey is a simple survey where we ask all our members to share their thoughts in the various areas of our club. Your feedback will help us to continue to strive to improve our service and facilities. Flu Season and Flu Prevention I know we have many doctors at CVAC, who I hope will agree with me when I say that we can all help to keep the spread of the flu to a minimum by just following a few simple steps. If you have the flu-- please stay home so you don t expose your fellow members. Frequently washing your hands, wiping down fitness equipment after usage, and covering your mouth/nose when coughing or sneezing -- are all simple steps that can help keep the flu at bay. Please help us to keep CVAC a healthy environment. CVAC Account Payment Recently our world has been overrun by credit card fraud and hackings that have jeopardized our sensitive information. You may have received new credit cards from your bank/credit card company in response to this. Please make sure you update your new credit card information with us when you receive a new card. Contact Audrey Brown, Accounting Director at or at Audrey@CVAConline.com to get your membership account updated. The same goes for updating your credit card s expiration date. Unsupervised Kids at the Club Over the last few months, we have experienced an increasing number of kids left unsupervised at the pool. I want to stress that having your 14 year old child watch your 10 year old child while you work out in the fitness center, unfortunately does not work. We are continuously striving to be a kid and family friendly club, but having young children left unsupervised at the pool is both unsafe and illegal. As you know, the California State law for water safety requires all children 13 years or younger to be under adult supervision at all times. Please help us because it is not the responsibility of other members or our staff to watch for your kids. Thank you for your understanding and support. CVAC Towels With the rainy season upon us I would like to ask our members not to use our regular towels to wipe down wet benches, wet floors or spills. Please see the CVAC Concierge for a Utility Towels (which are old stained towels). In the Mind and Body Center you ll find these utility towels on the bottom rack. This will help keep the towels we use for the pool and showers cleaner for longer. The team works very hard to continue to provide a clean product to all. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions please contact me as Ron@CVAConline.com or call me at (831) See you at the club, with healthy wishes, Ron Haas General Manager Ron@CVAConline.com (831)

6 CVAC NEWSLETTER November 2016 Notes From Pilates Alan Herdman teaching the Arrow, a back strengthening exercise, at Pilates Anytime. Physical fitness can neither be achieved by wishful thinking nor outright purchase. - Joseph Pilates Holiday Hours No Group Classes on November 24th & 25th for Thanksgiving and Black Friday. Many newcomers to Pilates believe that Equipment based Pilates is more difficult than Mat Pilates. In fact, it is the other way around! Pilates on the Equipment is what Joseph taught in his studio in New York, and Mat exercises were given to clients as homework. Pilates Equipment has moveable pieces to better support the correct alignment of the body, and an even more fascinating element is that it gives the client feedback through resistive straps, springs and bars; this allows clients to gain better control of their body in a safe and supportive state. November During the month of November we will be running Pilates Demos for anyone who is new to Equipment based Pilates. These 30-minute, $5.00 sessions can be scheduled through front desk sign-ups. We would like to welcome Tyler Nicole Grimshaw to our full time teaching staff. She has both classical and contemporary teaching styles and will be booking new clients this month. Please contact me to schedule your session with Tyler. 11 CVAC NEWSLETTER November 2016 Member Spotlight MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Roman Tagliola Roman (left) by the pool with James Ferguson (right). Roman is wearing James Ferguson s Bronze medal for Water Polo won in the 1972 Olympic Games. What s special about the 1972 Summer Olympic medals is that the Germans elected to use metal chains instead of ribbons. He has become a familiar face at the CVAC pool, training 6 days a week, 2x a day for 1.5 to 2 hours. With his dad Michael by his side supporting and coaching him along the way, meet CVAC s talented resident rising swimmer Roman Tagliola. Don t let his young age (10.5 to be exact), friendly personality, sunny smile, and positive energy fool you into underestimating just what an amazingly talented and skillful competitor Roman is. I was able to interview Roman in between his interval training and here s what he had to say: How long have you been swimming? For almost 4 years now. What do you love about it? I just love the water. Do you have a favorite stroke? No, I love all of them. Is there anything that you like to do just before a race? My dad and I do a flying chest bump and I like to play card games. Who are your role models? I like Michael Phelps and my parents (Michael and Erin Tagliola)! What do you like about CVAC? I like the pool and the surroundings are really nice. The hot tub is my favorite thing about CVAC and all the nice members too. What is your dream? I want to win a gold medal for the 50M Free at the Olympics. And with the races he is winning and the times he is posting, Roman is on his way to do just that! Although Roman spends some of his time training in Boulder, CO, you will see more of him at CVAC as he starts some of his dry land training with Antonio, one of our very own personal trainers. Wish him well when you see him. Roman is currently ranked the #1 ten-year old in California and has won 43 races in a row and counting. Even more impressive is his national ranking. He holds the #2 spot in the 50Yd Breast, #3 in the 100Yd. Breast, #5 in the 50 and the 100Yd. Fly, #7 in the 100 IM (Individual Medley), and #11 in the 200 IM. And it doesn t stop there, Roman ranks within the top 25 for his freestyle and backstroke too. And he is only 10! Congrats on your rankings and good luck in your future competitions Roman! Your CVAC family is proud of you and is cheering for you!
