1 SG MESSENGER: Friday 18th January 2019, No PREP 4 MATHS ASSEMBLY At the end of a week focusing on times tables, the theme for Prep 4D s assembly was how Maths is everywhere in our lives. From working out the ratios needed to mix the correct hair colour, to the dollar/pound exchange rate, to numbers of Olympic medals and maths in rhythm and music Prep 4D showed us just how important it is to understand basic mathematical concepts. So CON-CEN-TRATE and keep working hard in your maths lessons! The next Bag2School collection is Thursday 14 February see the PTA page for more information. ARTIST OF THE WEEK Our mathematical theme is continued in this week s Artist of the Week Osten F-P s (Prep 4D) colourful geometrical picture.
2 PREP 3 & 5 FOREST SCHOOL As we work with Mr Curtis to create a healthier, warmer, tastier and more sustainable Forest School menu, we have a requirement for reusable cutlery of all types. If you have any old cutlery that you no longer need, please bring it in to Mr Curnow. Thank you. This week Prep 3 and 5 had an exciting start to the Forest School year on another beautiful day to be in the woods. There was a friction fire lighting demo (more practice needed Mr C!), a Roman siphon experiment, knives and axes used and bee hotels and bird boxes created and decorated with natural pigments. Most exciting was the new trial of Mr Curtis's new healthier (and warm) Forest School lunch menu... finished off with Mr Curnow's less healthy campfire doughnuts! FRIDAY INSPIRATION During Friday assembly Mr Jones told us about ultrarunner Jasmin Paris, who recently won the 268-mile Montane Spine Race in record time. The race starts in Edale in the Peak District of Derbyshire and follows the Pennine Way to finish in Kirk Yetholm in Scotland. With more than 13,000 m (43,000ft) of climbing it is a brutal challenge. Jasmin completed the course in 83 hours, 12 minutes and 23 seconds, knocking more than 12 hours off the previous record and becoming the first woman to win the race in its history. What s more, Jasmin expressed milk at rest stops along the way for her baby daughter. She said: I raced hard and gave it the best I could. Truly an inspiration to us all!

5 SPORT U11 Rugby v Lorenden and Ashford A Team Match Reporter Edward C-S This week, the U11 A team played our first rugby matches of the season. Unfortunately, Mr Smith was unwell, so Mr Jones swapped his suit for his shorts and refereed both matches. The first match was against Lorenden. We won the toss and the game began with quick advantage to SG and we nearly scored in the corner. Great play by Josh and Hector with support from William Durham and we were 0-1 up. Lorenden fought back but were offside and we scored again. Will L made a terrific pass to Dennis out on the wing. Lorenden found space and made good use of the ball to score. Their second try was an excellent team effort but we matched it with another try from Hector and the final score was 5-2. Mrs Desmet watched and summed up our victory as Space to improve but a good first match. Man of the match was Hector. Our second match was against Ashford - who we always like to beat. Could we do it today? The rain set in for the second match but it didn't stop our drive to win. We started well and scored after sustained pressure. We knew the danger lay with their quick runners and we were determined to stop them. Unfortunately, we let them through once in the 1st half but later, Josh was able to stop them from scoring. We lost the ball by piling in from the side but Oliver and I stopped another try by pushing Ashford into touch. Alexander tackled strongly. Mr Jones penalised us for handing off Ashford and piling in from the side - you see he wasn't a biased referee! Despite our mistakes, our defence was solid and our attack was potent and we eventually won 4-1, Mrs Hulme thought it was a hard hitting battle to the try line by SG. We were happy it was another win. Everyone played their part well. Man of the match was Alexander S for his hefty charges and a brilliant tackle on their excellent runner. B Team Match Reporter - Reuben D The first game was against Lorenden and we started well but unfortunately the final score was 7-8 to them. Our second game was against Ashford and went a lot better. Svamin made some really good tackles and Cameron got the ball a lot and passed to me. I ran as fast as I could and scored a few tries. The final score was 6-5 to us. Men of the match were Cameron and me. It was very rainy and cold so we really enjoyed our match tea of hot giant sausage rolls! Thank you to the cooks for making it and to Mr Curnow for coaching us. U9 Rugby v Lorenden Match Reporter - Rafael B The game started and we failed to tackle Lorenden and let a silly try away. After a while we got the hang of it and scored 2 tries, both by Dexter. At half time Mr Curnow said don t drive much (at all!), poor Thomas E! In the second half, we put a lot of efforts in. The final score. drum roll please Mr Hermann should be here doing the drumming 9-7 to Spring Grove. Men of the Match Alfie and Thomas E. Thank you to Mr Curnow and Mr Hutchings for taking us. Thank you to Lorenden for the lovely match tea. U8 Rugby v Lorenden Match Reporter - Toby D The opposition was strong, with some experienced players and a number of Year 4 boys. We got really chilly waiting for the U9 team to finish but when the whistle blew we were ready to play. It was a hard first match but we got into it and showed a great improvement in the second half. Freddie, Osten and I scored tries but the final score was 3-10 to Lorenden. There was great support from our parents, despite the cold, and a good team talk from Mr Curnow. Thank you Mr Curnow for organising and to Mr Hutchings for keeping us warm and active. Man of the Match was Freddie. Better luck next time SG!
