We may be small but we truly follow the Lions motto We Serve. Last month we had the honor of having our two scholarship winners and their families join us for a small celebration. This is what we are all about, giving them a financial start toward helping them achieve their future goals. In case you missed the presentation, their Bios are on page 4. We have our annual Awards Luncheon and Installation of Officers on Sunday, June 24 th, 2 PM, at The Green Turtle, hope all can attend. We will have our annual budget board meeting sometime in July. I am working on a date for that meeting. Our next event will be the Peach Festival which should be August 18 th, so mark your calendars. Hopefully, we will all have a nice safe summer. Meeting Eyeglass Collection 250 pairs of eye glasses (199 reg., 38 sunglasses, 12 children's glasses & 1 eyeglass frame) have been collected in May from various Recycle for Sight collection box locations in Middletown. Lion, Chair Milford Car Raffle Tickets Something to remember when selling your packet of car raffle tickets. If you haven't received your packet Lion Ginny will be in touch shortly. White 2018 Jeep Cherokee Latitude 4 X 4 The 1 st place winner has a choice of the car or $18,000. There will also be 4 second place prizes of $500 each. A couple of other reminders in regard to ticket sales: if the ticket purchaser is a Delaware resident, please be sure to have them write or print clearly at least the following on the ticket stub: Name City Phone # If the ticket purchaser is a non-delaware resident please be sure to have them write or print clearly all the information on the ticket: Name, Street Address, City, State, Zip, Phone # Banner Transfer Mark your calendar if you plan to attend the July 18th Banner Transfer. The Modern Maturity Center always serves a delicious meal. Details follow July 18, 2018 Modern Maturity Center Social 5:30 pm - Dinner 6:15 pm $20 per person Lion Becky filled in as acting-secretary at the May meeting in Lion Carolyn's absence. Minutes will be read at the June meeting. Sight Days I would like to shout out a big thank you to Lion for volunteering his time to assist me with Sight Days on June 2nd at Willey Farms. Lion Aimee DeBenedictis Awards Luncheon This year our Awards Luncheon it will be held at The Green Turtle (across from Grotto's) Sunday, June 24th from 2-4 PM. If you haven't already paid, please remember to bring a $25 check made out to MLC to cover the cost of your meal plus gratuities. As always, we welcome spouses and guests to join us. The more attendees the merrier! U.S. Flag Program On Wed., June 27th, 2 PM, we will be visiting the Boys & Girls Club on Broad Street. Tagging along will be our Lion mascot to delight the children and of course, to assist whenever possible. If you would like to assist in some flag trivia (all written down if you need help) we can certainly use your help for this half-hour presentation to the children. Please let Lion Carolyn know if you are interested. We are at an all-time membership record high, but still 40 thousand less than our 35-year target: 1.5 Million members. 4 pg. 4 Middletown Lions ROARS Corina Flynn is an Appoquinimink High School graduating senior. This fall, Corina will be attending Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. She intends to focus her studies around neuroscience and fine art. She hopes her future career can bring her passions for science and art together. Corina has been active in the community throughout her four years in high school. After being a patient for two years at Premier Physical Therapy in Middletown, she began volunteering as an assistant to give back to her local communal family. Corina has also volunteered as a co-coach for academy soccer teams at Kirkwood Soccer Club. She s a member of the Appoquinimink Varsity Women's soccer team, and a passionate art student. Her senior year included raising money for the Appoquinimink High School art department. She sold her paintings, drawings and tattoo designs that raised $ for next years art classes to support the future art students of Appoquinimink High School. Corina is also a member of the National Honors Society, where she spends a lot of her time volunteering for businesses and charities such as the Boys and Girls Club and the Salvation Army. Corina is a current employee at Willey Farms in Townsend. In addition, starting in 2016, Corina started her own business managing the social media presence for online entrepreneurs and influencers on Facebook. Sabryn Davis-Cannon is a Middletown High School graduating senior and in the fall plans to attend Ohio State University studying Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. One of the activities that she participated in during High School was being a volleyball team member from 9th through 12th grade. She was also a cheer team member from 9th through 11th grade and during her senior year became captain of her cheer team. Sabryn is also a National Honor Society Member and a member of HOSA which stands for Health Occupations Students of America. The community service activities that she was involved in were making pillowcase dresses for young girls in Africa, MLK Day of Service, a Girl Scout mentor, tree planting, volunteering at Ronald McDonald House, park clean up, and Food Bank of America. At the Ronald McDonald House, she served food. During MLK Day of Service, she participated in cleaning up trash in the streets and sidewalks of Wilmington. Sabryn made care packages for the men and women who have served our country, the care packages consisted of towels, food, and hand sanitizer. Sabryn works at the Department of Health and Social Services. The activities that she enjoys most are reading books and making pillowcase dresses for girls in Africa.
5 pg. 5 Middletown Lions ROARS TIDBITS FROM REGION 1, ZONE 2 Glasgow Lions Club Our annual $1000 scholarships were awarded to Michael Just, a senior at Glasgow High School and to Jaquan Harley, a senior at Hodgson Vo Tech. Michael plans to attend Drexel to major in a Music Technology program. He has been very active in Glasgow s music program and math league. He also has been involved in the community with DFRC, DNREC coastal cleanup and tree planting for an organization. Jaquan plans to attend Albright College to prepare for a medical career. He has been involved in school with HOBY, student council, National Honor Society among others. He has volunteered at the Food Bank and Educators Rising events. A hardy four Glasgow Lions roamed our Adopta-Highway section of Rt 896 collecting 25 bags of trash and an assortment of other items. We basically cleaned a very dirty section north of Rt. 40 as the other section was not in bad condition. Newark Lions Club Although attendance was down at our Pancake Breakfast held the end of April we still did very well. The winner of the 50/50 graciously donated her portion back to the club. Our first meeting in June has been changed to Mon. the 4th. We will be meeting with the Brookside Lions Club and our speaker will be Lion Barbara Spence who will speak on the Delaware Special Olympics and will be bringing an Olympian with her. We are losing one of our members, Lion Jean Williams, as she is moving to South Carolina to be closer to her family. Lion Jean has been a Lion for over 10 years. During that time she has been in charge of our eyeglass sorting and our Pancake Breakfast. We will miss her!!! Greetings from District Governor Charles Taylor Hello Lions, Lioness and Leo's: On Friday April 21 and 22, 2018 Lion Kathy and myself attended District 22-C Social, the last Social for On April 28 the District held an Orientation at Wilmington Manor Lions. The Orientation is to learn about how Lions was formed. There was information on Club Officers and about leaders for our District. Thank You to PDG and GLT Cheryl and PDG Bob Jones for their time and effort. The Delaware Lions Foundation held their walk on April 29, 2018 at Dewey Beach great turnout and lots of food. Thanks to all on the committee for the hard work they put into it. May arrived and The Multiple 22 Convention was held at The Princess Royal in Ocean City, Maryland. Attendance increased this year but attendance should be better. You get to meet Lions that come from other parts of the Multiple. District 22-D won the Trophy with largest attendance. Elections were held and our District Governor Elect John Burris will be installed at the Convention in Las Vegas. Lion Kenny Vincent will be our First Vice President for the year I would like to say congratulations to both. Leadership training will be held on June 2, The Training will be held at Delaware State University. Please come if you are going to be leaders for you District or for your Club. Even if you arer not going to be a leader still come and join us, it might change your mind. Any questions contact GLT Cheryl Jones.
