By: Cody Smith Counselor News If you would like to discuss anything with me, you are welcome to come to my office at any time. Thank you, Jennifer Mynarcik Quote of the Week! If you want what you have never had, you have to do what you have never done. By: Todd Doughty Baseball The yellowjackets season has started off pretty good. Even though they lost a key player and friend Will Speer due to a dirt bike accident. He is currently doing well and is coming out to every game supporting his team and friends. The jackets, however are doing well. They are- 4-2 in post-season right now and 0-1 in district losing a hard fought game to Moody. The game started off rocky with a couple errors letting them get 2 runs fast in the first inning. But like Coach says you have to play hard every play no slacking and you have to come together and help each other out to win the game and it will be all okay. By: Cody Smith

19 Jacket Gazette Page 3 March 11, 2011 ATTENTION SR. AND JR.!! Seniors, there are scholarship deadlines coming up so make sure you go apply for them NOW! There is a lot of money out there for college waiting for YOU! You just have to keep searching for them. One website you can go to is Also, seniors, you should already have a general idea on what college you are planning to attend, but you need to know registration dates, financial aid deadlines, and your living situation. There is only three months left in your high school journey then it s off to college. So make your first step and start applying for scholarships!!! As for the juniors, some may just think about is, I can t wait till summer comes. That s not all to worry about, in three months you all will be seniors and start looking for colleges. So why not start now!! Start taking your ACT & SAT in the summer and later in your senior year because you may improve your score. Right now start thinking about what university or jr. college you would like to attend. Research that college to see what you need, such as what scores you need to make on your ACT or SAT to get in that particular college. During the summer, visit the colleges you would be interest in to see if you like campus and the teachers, as well as the students. At the beginning of your senior year start applying for scholarships there s plenty of money out for you!!! SAY NO TO BULLYING!! Bullying is a big problem. It can make kids feel hurt, scared, sick, lonely, embarrassed and sad. Bullies may hurt young children such as calling them names, and pushing them around. Some bullies come from families where everyone is fighting and shouting all the time. They may think that being angry, calling names, and pushing people around is a normal way to act. Some bullies have been bullied themselves. Bullies often pick on someone they think they can have power over. They might pick on kids who get upset easily or who have trouble sticking up for themselves. Getting a big reaction out of someone can make bullies feel like they have the power they want. Sometimes bullies pick on someone who is smarter than they are or different from them in some way. Sometimes bullies just pick on a kid for no reason at all. They feel really insecure about themselves and feel if they pick on others they get self esteem to put others down. There are many teens and children commiting suicide because they are being bullied at school so much. Preventing bullying helps children realize that they have someone who cares about them. Stand tall and be brave, feel good about yourself. There is also help for kids being bullied. If you are one of them, go to the counselor and talk to her about it. 23 Jacket Gazette Page 7 March 11, 2011 Peer Pressure How would you define Peer Pressure? Something people do when they are too scared to try something on their own so they pressure someone else into doing it. -Ashlee When you are greatly influenced by someone to do something you aren't choosing to do yourself. -Sydney What's your opinion on Peer Pressure? Every teen goes through it sooner or later. Being pressured is a hard situation to be in, but always stand strong in what you believe in. -Jelly I don't agree with peer pressure, because I think everyone should have the right to do and think whatever they prefer. -Lindsey Have you ever been pressured to do something you didn't want to do and how did you handle it? Yes, I have been pressured to do something I know I shouldn t do and I just simply said no. I was called names because I didn t do it, but I didn t care because I knew it was wrong and I stood up for what I believed in. No, I normally don't like to listen to people and do what they tell me. Page By:Jonesboro Keep Our School Clean The responsibility of keeping our school clean belongs to all of us not just the custodial staff. Students are requested to use the several garbage bins that are placed by the doors to deposit their papers or uneaten food items. This helps keep our grounds in the same high standard of cleanliness as the remainder of the community. Students who find broken glass or other strange and dangerous looking objects should not touch them but report these to a teacher. To help maintain the quality of life and education at School, we ask everyone to accept responsibility for the care and maintenance of school property. Academic UIL The MHS academic team has not been resting on the weekends over the past month. With four invitational meets over a 5 week period, competitors have gained experience. Drinking and Driving Prom is April 30, very soon so everybody needs to start thinking about the consequences of making the wrong decisions. Every twenty two minutes, someone dies in an alcohol related motor vehicle accident. Drinking and driving is an extremely severe issue in today's society, especially amongst teenagers, yet many people do not realize how damaging the decision of driving a motor vehicle after a night of drinking actually is. The numbers go even lower in age in some cases such as, one in every ten 12 to 13 year old uses alcohol at least once a month. Teenagers are inexperienced drivers to begin with, and when alcohol is added to the mix, it produces statistics such as, of all the fatalities involving teenage drivers, sixty percent of them were alcohol related. One of the most shocking numbers by far is five hundred and twenty two adolescence, who were either the age of 14 or younger, were arrested for drinking and driving in one year, and one hundred and thirteen of them were under the age of ten. The consequences are getting a DWI, or causing yourself or somebody a serious injury or death. By: Edgar Vergara

28 Jacket Gazette Page 12 March 11, 2011 Poetry by Nikki Valentine Tennis "Curse the Bell" The dreaded sound of a school bell Rings in my ears forevermore. As I walk into this seven hour well, I look back in prayer at the exit door. I drag my feet to the breakfast table. I nearly crawl to see my first teacher. To stay awake, I'm barely able. At least this one's not a preacher. Finally the next bell rings. I sit up and wipe my drool. In a rush, I grab my things. It's so hard to stay in school. Seven periods go by. Then I run to catch my bus. By now I'm sure that I could cry. I sleep so that I cannot cuss. Maybe if they made it snappy, School days wouldn't be so crappy. To keep calm, it's complicated. Because teachers think they're sophisticated. After all these years, we have forgotten Why our brains are so rotten. When the final bell rings and school is done We sit and stare up at the sun. We beg for a pencil in our eye So we can go see the school nurse Pray that we might even die To avoid the school bell's ringing curse.
