For Cross Country riding (over fences 0.8m high and above) including Eventing, Tetrathlon, Hunter Trials and Pony Racing, whether it be tests, rallies or training, a jockey skull cap with no fixed peak must be worn. It is also strongly recommended that a jockey skull cap is worn for cross country riding even over lower fences. And please don t forget that all those new skull caps will also need to be checked and tagged by either Mary Bere or Sue Marshall. SUBSCRIPTIONS - due January 1 st. 5 TAUNTON VALE HARRIERS PONY CLUB OCTOBER 2009 NEWSLETTER Dear All, The Pony Club has enjoyed an action-packed summer with children competing at all levels and enjoying fun rides and rallies. Over 100 children and ponies attended the junior and senior camps. Your ponies were probably glad of the rest when you went back to school! This programme has lots to offer and we hope to see you all at the Parents Evening on Wednesday 28 th October when we shall look back over the year and present awards and badges. New Members We would like to welcome our new members to the club; Mollie Vellacott, Ellie Flay, Thea Fraser-Taliente, Pip Williams, Tom and Sam Morrison, George Clist and Jack Tomlinson. A very warm welcome to you all and we look forward to meeting you and your ponies. Mini Camp Hooray, said Bee, the sun shone at mini camp this year, which made everything so much easier. The venue was fabulous and a big, big thank you to The Minchin family for all their hard work and great hospitality. A wonderful army of parents and younger helpers supported Camp and helped to make it such a special event. And all 52 children were kind to their ponies, even when the ponies misbehaved, and kept smiling even when they fell off for the third time that day! ( and thank you Bee..) Senior Camp Senior Camp was held at Pontispool this summer and 53 children had a great time whatever the weather. Show jumper Tom Dunn, (ex PC and very handsome thought the girls!) amazed us with his display, jumping over some of the pony club children! The children were marked every day for their stables, turnout and the state of their portakabins not a high scoring round for the boys! AREA EVENTS, - Eventing, Show Jumping and Dressage Eventing From Sue Marshall, our Chief Instructor Walking the cross country course the night before the Area Horse Trials led to some very thoughtful competitors and very quiet parents! The course was more technical than previous years and would demand a great deal of concentration from riders in planning their lines and keeping the horses/ponies balanced. The Harriers entered 5 teams, four in the Novice section and one in the Intermediate. Everyone had worked really hard during our regular training sessions and they should all be proud of themselves for what they achieved. The teams were as follows - The green team of Saskia Simonson, Kitty Bromovsky, Hatty Harrison and Lauren Criddle who missed qualifying by only one point - the yellow team of Taggy Forester Bennett, Clare Benn and Pippa Maunder and Tom Knott - the blue team of George Alsop, Sophie Walker, Lucy Moore and India Knott and the red team of Tarn McIntosh, Leea Dodd, Millie Moore and Harriet Frith. Later in the day, the Intermediate team of Lottie and Maddie Simonson and Steph Bere competed in very heavy rain and I m not even sure how they managed to see where they were going and the cross country course became very slippery. You did really well girls and came 5 th. Special congratulations to Kitty and Taggy who were first and second in their sections and qualified for the Championships, a very exciting event! They were faced with an extremely challenging track, which they both rode really well and Kitty came 10 th in her section and Taggy was 3 rd. Well done! Show Jumping. Once again the club was very well represented with four Novice teams and Steph Bere on her own in the Intermediate. The first team of Leea Dodd, Lauren Criddle, Kitty Bromovsky and Taggy Forester Bennett rode brilliantly to come second and qualify. The second

6 team of George Alsop, Lucy Moore, Millie Moore and Tom Knott rode very well to come 3 rd and Lucy qualified 2 nd individually. The third team of Rosie Maunder, Hatty Harrison, Kate Stephens and Saskia Simonson came 8 th and a well deserved 2 nd in the Tack and Turnout competition. The fourth team was made up of India Knott, Sophie Walker and Harriet Frith. At the Championships the team came 10 th overall, which was a fantastic result as the ground was not only on a slope but very rough, and Lucy Moore rode a brilliant round to come 9 th overall. Dressage The first team of Saskia Simonson, Lauren Criddle, Kitty Bromovsky and Hatty Harrison came 2 nd and qualified for the Championships, and Lauren came a brilliant 1 st and Saskia 3 rd. The second team of Pippa Maunder, Harriet Frith, India Knott and Araminta Oldham all performed well and Harriet came 5 th and India 6 th. Pippa Loarridge rode as an individual and did a lovely test. In the Intermediate, Maddie Simonson did so well to come 5 th individually. At the Championships the team of Kitty, Lauren, Harriet and India rode some excellent tests but, ( in the opinion of our DC) were marked really hard and with another judge may have won! What a fantastic set of results for the club! Well done to everyone and a special thank you to Sue Marshall and Heather Davies for organising all the trainings and teams. We would also like to thank all the parents and supporters who drove miles up the M5 and beyond to attend the Championships, enduring a four-hour delay on the motorway but it was all good fun. Rallies and Tetrathlon Rallies have been held all over the area and hopefully there was a rally to suit everyone. We are very grateful to those members who held rallies at home, which greatly reduces costs and creates a more family atmosphere. Special thanks to Serena Lambert, Wendy Sheppard, Sue Frith and Caroline Benn and to Jenny Parsons for her popular evening rallies. A Mini Tet Day for newcomers was held at Kentisbeare and the children had a fabulous day riding, shooting and swimming. Grateful thanks to hosts Nick and Sarah Allan and Serena for organising. If you have an arena where we could hold a rally please do let us know. There would be help in organising the rally promise!! And finally ( please do let us know any of your news ) Beth Wojcik,19, is now training for her BHSAI at Pippin Equestrian Centre in Gillingham. Pippin is a busy riding school and livery yard and a PC centre. We wish her well. Pearce has been chosen to attend Horse of the Year Show for a Master Class with Stephen Hadley and to compete in the Mini Major competition on December 17 th..passports please remember that it is now illegal to travel without an equine passport wherever you are going, so suggest you perhaps keep the passport in the car and keep a copy at home. Last month two ex-members of the PC were married ( aah!), - Andrew Parsons, Jenny s very handsome son married the lovely Caroline Chadwick, Sue Marshall s daughter and they drove away from the church in a very big tractor, with Caroline in the driving seat!
