MEETING NOTES The meeting was called to order by President Mike Maddox and Molly Gilmore led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Happy Birthday, led by Cliff and Pete was sung for all of those celebrating August birthdays. Charley Blatchford gave us the thought for the day: Page 2

Recognition Minute: Mike announced the Recognition Minute a chance for any member to tell the rest of the club something positive about another member that we might not know. Trish Barnes praised the ever humble Charley Blatchford by telling us how much help he has given to a destitute, struggling man over the years Page 4

I guarantee you that you'll learn at least a FEW new things about members!! Here's ONE TRIVIAL FACT about a prominent member that will NOT be included in Monday night's trivia contest: This member states that she/he gets their kicks by watching chess being played on YouTube! And...the best way to make him/her happy, is to have this member drink a cup of coffee... Coffee = Happiness! (who knew!??)...(i know that, so does Pete Schroeder! Ed.) 6 CLUB ANNOUNCEMENTS: Our President announced his 3 goals for August after a busy, productive July: 1. Fix the Village Clock 2. Change the labels on the badge box 3. Decide (not do) if the club will paint the cemetery fence feel free to weigh in. Rotary Foundation board meeting is this Saturday, 8/10, at the Vogel s home 9 a.m. Bill Wagner reminds us to get our $100 for the year in to him so that each of us will be a sustaining member. $50 in addition is requested for the Club Foundation. He has only received $ from 19 of our 59 members to date. Bill also invites anyone who would like to learn more about the Foundation or what he does, there is a district seminar on 8/17. If you are interested, give Bill a call. DAVE CLAUGUS HAS RETURNED TO THE VALLEY after his 225 MILE trek on the John Muir trail to the top of Mt.Whitney. All done for POLIO PLUS. If you did not get a chance to pledge bucks to help Dave End Polio Now, don t dismay!! He is still accepting money. Make checks out to The Rotary Foundation or drop Dave some cash. Dave celebrated his 60 th birthday on the trail! Nita Castro is collecting gently used or new pillow cases from which dresses for African little girls will be fashioned. She brought some cute examples. If you have some pillow cases to donate, please get them to Nita and a great big Way to Go to her! Pres Mike asks us to LIKE the club Facebook Page. Little Genius, the honorable Fred Rowe, later gave us all an additional incentive to hit that LIKE button. IMPORTANT DATES: August 23 rd, 24 th - Club Campout. Maggie has a great weekend planned games, singing, etc. She says there are two cabins left (quite small) and some campsites. Please let Maggie know if you have decided to go as Friday night is a potluck and everyone needs to bring some grub. September 7 - Amador Wine Cellars trip - parking lot party at 2, bus leaves at 3. You need to let Maggie know by the 16 th if you are going or the seats go to the Orangevale club! September 16 Club Photo Day. Take a shower, do your hair (there are exceptions the Petes and Dan, etc), wear your favorite shirt and come prepared to SMILE! Page 6

7 September 18 Senior Luau being held from 11:30 1:30. Anne Browning will be asking for volunteers to help out that day. If any club members know of any seniors who might like to attend, please encourage them to come and arrange for them to get a ticket - $10. The event is catered by Hannibal s restaurant. There is entertainment and raffle prizes. (Hopefully, none of them are supplied by our President. Just saying. Ed.) September 21 CHICKEN FESTIVAL - All hands on deck!! October 18 Fair Oaks Uncorked - let Pete Schroeder know if you can be of help at the new St. Mel s fellowship hall. Drawings: Free Dinner went to Bob Walters, Again! Ace of Spades: John Brothers drew the King of Clubs. (Yay! Ed.) Mike s special treats: Tom Raines was gifted a stunning pair of white sunglasses (He looks like he s pronouncing the name on the Rotary flag behind him. Or is he saying Hot cha cha?) Joe Horyza wins a jump rope, to the great amusement of our guest speaker Page 7

8 Don Hicks walked away with a bottle of Dollar Tree red (red food coloring is a buck extra) Don contemplates his bottle of One Buck Upchuck LITTLE GENIUS Little Genius is Fred Rowe! (He s very severe with people who lose their keys!) Fred reminds us to wear our Rotary pins ESPECIALLY WHEN NOT AT ROTARY!! You can count on a fine if you attend August meetings without your pin! Do you know who your Buddy is????? If not, get acquainted! Fred then led each table in a round of questions about basketball to prep us for the night s speaker. We did not turn out to be a bunch of basketball gurus but great fun! (Especially for Fred, who Googled the Kings, and garnered arcane facts to stump the membership.) Page 8

9 SPEAKER: Ken Friedman of Upward Sports By Karen Romines Papa Ken, as the kids like to call him, shared with us his program Upward Sports. Upward Sports was founded in Spartanburg, S.C., 27 years ago. It now has 2400 participating churches, with 550,000 kids playing basketball, flag football, soccer and cheerleading. Baseball is in the future. The South Africans play cricket. The program emphasizes fun and sportsmanship. Ken has just returned from a Mission trip to Baja and leaves soon to share this program for his second time in Romania. His sponsoring church is Fair Oaks Presbyterian where he had 360 kids, kindergarten through sixth grade, participating in basketball and cheerleading. 40 basketball teams and 6 cheerleading teams practiced and played at Fair Oaks Pres this year. Outside events include a Night at the Kings and a trip to see a game at William Jessup University. There is a registration fee to participate; however Ken says he has never turned a child away. This is possible due to scholarships and volunteers who provide transportation for those in need. Life Lessons are incorporated into the program. This year Honesty, Patience and Kindness are the lessons to be learned. Parents are encouraged to come to practices so that these lessons can be carried on into the home. What can we do to help? Ken says that many provide support through prayer. Help is needed with transportation and financial help is always welcome. Anyone who would like to coach or provide other help is welcome to contact Ken. (I wish to give a heart-felt thank you to Karen Romines, who took great notes and made this Acorn possible. Ed.)
