1 Prep Patter is available online at Follow us on and facebook at Durban Prep Parent Community DPHS NEWS AND RESULTS BULLETIN 06: WEDNESDAY 17 FEBRUARY 2016 The Headmaster : hpike@dphs.co.za Admissions : denise@dphs.co.za Media Centre : mmuthusamy@dphs.co.z Marketing : cmccarthy@dphs.co.za a Finance : michellew@dphs.co.za Sports Office : michaeldick@dphs.co.za TELEPHONE: FAX: FROM THE HEADMASTER The first Prep Pal meetings met the expectations of the many who had eagerly anticipated their first encounter with the members of their 2016 Prep Pal family. Each Grade 7 Leader was able to set the tone for the year with their respective group, duly assisted by house teachers as a guide on the side. This initiative contributes much to the camaraderie in the school and we look forward to the further promotion of this sense of oneness amongst the boys of Prep through the year. Of matters DPHS Family and School Governance: Notice of the School Governing Body By Election Meeting of 18h30 Thursday 18 February 2016 was sent a month ago. The Notice is also available in Resources (under General ) on the school s d6 Communicator. We are expecting a good turn by DPHS parents to exercise their right to vote at this important meeting. Manners maketh the man. As the boys will often hear in assembly, our People of Prep ; boys, staff and parents; are our very best advertisements. The school is happy to receive many a letter, recording and commenting on the good impression left on folk coming into contact with representatives of the school. I close this week by sharing with you excerpts from a letter (name supplied) received last week: Good Morning,

2 I have had the most awful experiences while visiting various schools and watching the behaviour of the scholars and have been completely appalled! I was beginning to wonder if this was now the way of the world Yesterday I attended the... and while sitting on the benches observed a young man, between the ages of 6 8 playing by a tree. (After a while) he dusted himself off, neatened his shirt and came skipping past me. When he reached me he stopped and greeted me: Good afternoon, Ma am and continued on his way. I was completely blown over! I noticed his badge on his shirt and thought that, even though he was not at his school or with a parent, he instinctively knew to greet and this behaviour for him was completely normal something I have not seen in many years. this little boy has restored my faith in the young adults they will become. I thought I would let you know ab this incident as I am sure your teachers would like to know that what they are teaching these children, ab manners and respect and how they portray themselves of the school premises, is indeed working! They should be very proud of themselves. Thank you to all who guide and assist the boys to continue to contribute to Prep s honoured name. Challenges are what make life interesting and overcoming them is what makes life meaningful. (Joshua J Marine) CONGRATULATIONS The following boys were chosen as Swimming Captains of their respective swim teams: A Team: Chad Uys B Team: Taine Roothman C Team: Riley Hardwick D Team: Samuel Spooner DPHS staff member Ross Bedford participated in the Midmar Mile swim on the weekend. He received a Pope Ellis Biathlon medal for completing both the Comrades Marathon and the Midmar Mile. The school is very proud of our swimming coach, Heather Campbell. For the fifth year in succession, Coach Campbell swam all 8 Midmar Mile weekend programme events, raising money for the Pink Drive Fund (breast and prostate cancer) fund. We have been informed the following boys successfully completed the Midmar Mile on Sunday 14th February 2016: Matthew Hayes, Yusuf Dhai, Mark Maree, Seth Hopkins and Jack Hampson Benjamin Ribbink was awarded 3 gold, 4 silver, 1 bronze and U11 boys Competitor of the Championship pennants at the 2016 Lifesaving KZN Nipper Championships. Both teams won a category each and received R400 in vouchers. Yahshiv Moodley answered 2 individual questions and won R20 and Joshua Maskell answered 1 individual question and won R10.

A big thank you must also be extended to the Blue Group parents for providing the delicious eats. On Thursday, Puppet World will be presenting a show to the boys on Homes and Habitats. Please remember that Eye Screening will be taking place during school on Monday 22nd and Tuesday 23rd February. JUNIOR PRIMARY NEWS Last Friday was a particularly important day at Prep. The boys arrived at school dressed in their House Kit and started the day with their first Prep Pal meeting of the year. The focus was on meeting each member of their new family under the care of their appointed Grade 7 leader. Activities involved games and discussion which gave the boys opportunities to introduce themselves and to get to know something important ab each other. The Grade 7 leaders always take particular care of the JP boys in their family and are looking forward to supporting them in their various endeavours during the year. Three U9 cricket teams had the exciting experience of travelling to Pietermaritzburg to play their fixtures against and did themselves proud. The results of these matches can be found in the results tables below. Prep has a proud swimming tradition and there are many JP boys who have recently made some fine achievements in this area. A number of U9 boys have been selected to swim in the DPHS U10 teams. They participated in galas last week and will also be competing in the Durban and Districts Galas next week. An U8 and U9 team will be participating in the Friendly Relay Gala at Glenwood Prep on Thursday afternoon. One of the Grade One boys, Seth Hopkins,

The more moments of brilliance a team or individual achieves, the greater their chance of success. Supporters or spectators of DPHS sport know how hard DPHS teams and boys work to take their skill and team work to the highest possible level. I m not referring to A teams or 1st teams only. I have seen and been told of standing brilliance in inter school fixtures across the full range of weekly fixtures, from E to A team and 6th to 1st Team! I am referring to cricket, tennis, water polo, swimming and golf this term. The Association fielding brilliance award for this week goes to KARAN VARYANI, 3rd team cricketer, whose super clean pick up, bullet fast and pin point accurate throw from mid wicket ran the opening batsman to ensure a win for DPHS in a match that went right to the wire! Please see in this edition of the Prep Patter, Karan s excellent bowling and batting figures in the same match. DEDICATION, SACRIFICE AND HARD WORK The DPHS Association stands tall in tribute and awe of the DPHS water polo teams, coaches and parents who despite the great handicap and obvious duress of being with a DPHS water polo pool go to the extreme extent of practising on Sundays or whenever an opportunity presents itself to strive to be the best water polo primary school in KZN. You know what I m talking ab! DPHS has always known how to fight their way to the top. No school in Sh Africa that I know of has more fight per square metre than DPHS. What pride you bring to your Association, Old Boys Friends and Supporters. This afternoon the DPHS 1st Team take on the big guns when they play the Kearsney U14A team at Kearsney College.
