The families that hosted the exchange boys from Shrewsbury House over the past two weeks. Everyone who came along to support at the Pentangular Gala at RBPS on Tuesday evening. The families who enjoyed the Grade N Picnic on Wednesday and the Grade 1 Parent Social on Thursday. POSITIVE PARENTING YOU CAN DO THIS! Being a parent is difficult. So is being a good teacher or coach. The unexpected abounds in childhood, and no-one has all the answers. JF Kennedy had a plaque on his desk that read, O Lord, the sea is so great and my boat is so small. What parent hasn t Dress: felt that? Often? All boys All are the required decisions to we wear need full to make, winter and uniform the moments including when blazers we want to say just the right words, can serve to remind us over and over again, how small our boat truly is. We need to remember that ~ we re not in this alone ~ we can draw on each other s strengths and support ~ we can only do our best! ~ If we clothe all our parental efforts and energies in love, unqualified love, our children will grow up to be fine adults of whom we will be most proud. 2 SPORT 67 Chaplain s Corner What is the Sport 67 initiative? Inspired by the legacy of Madiba, Sport 67 is a pilot collaborative project with Western Province Prep, Bishops, SACS, and Wynberg. Collectively, we are aiming to assemble complete cricket bags (helmet, gloves, pads, thigh pads and a bat) and donate them to under-resourced schools or clubs. We would like to do the same with hockey sticks and rugby/soccer boots. So, how can you get involved? If your children have outgrown any sports attire or decided they no longer enjoy a particular sport, you may have sports equipment that can still offer years of enjoyment. Many children do not have access to sports equipment. Donating your old sports equipment can put a smile on a child s face while decluttering your home. Ask your sons to clean the boots, pads etc. and we as a collective, would love to hand them to a needy school/club in a respectable condition. When? Members of Grade 5H will collect the equipment from your son s classroom during the first two weeks of March. 3 Pre-Primary Outreach SPCA Grassy Park THE CAFE We are looking for bakers and makers across all grades to assist with supplying home bakes (savoury and sweet) and deli type items for the always popular Café! If you are able to assist, your contribution will be greatly appreciated. Please contact Cally Mundy on or TOMBOLA The teachers run the very popular Tombola Stall at Fun Night. If you have any unwanted gifts or unnecessary purchases, please send them in to the school, clearly marked Tombola. Remember, one man s junk is another man s treasure! THE RHOMBUS Please deposit your good quality SECOND-HAND BOOKS (no magazines please), DVDs, CDs, electronic games (Wi, Xbox, PSP etc) and educational toys and games in the boxes in the Security Office at Gate 2 Newlands Road or outside the Eden Road Office. CAR STICKERS Your son should have been given two easy peel stickers which can be stuck on the back of your cars. Please help us bring in the crowds by assisting us with our advertising! The Pre-Primary has been associated with the SPCA since This ties in well with our nickname Wetpups, and is an organisation/cause to which young children can easily relate. Our initial support was in the form of a once-a-year Pet Food Pyramid. This also came to include all types of pet requirements such as old blankets, bowls etc. In 2006, we expanded our support to include Brown Money Fridays. The boys are encouraged to bring a few brown coins each week for the collection tins in the classrooms. On average we collect 45 kgs of coins each year, which amounts to about R800. In 2008, we stopped the food collection and developed the concept of Chores for Paws. This was prompted by the fact that we wanted our young boys to take a more active, but ageappropriate, role in our chosen outreach programme. For one month, in the first term, boys are encouraged to participate in chores around the home. Each chore earns R2 for the SPCA and a sticker for the boy s chart (25 blocks). The wonderful spinoff from this is that many boys continue with their chores, and develop a sense of responsibility and self-worth within the family unit! We have raised approximately R to date. The money is presented to the SPCA when they visit us for tea. Each boy is presented with an ANI-PAL badge to thank him for his efforts. We also make ourselves available for any unexpected needs the SPCA may have during the year; for example, when the Gordon s Bay SPCA suffered a mudslide one winter, we did a Blanket Blitz, and co-ordinated it through the SPCA Grassy Park. As one of their outings, the Grade R boys visit the SPCA, where they enjoy an educational puppet show and take a tour of the facilities. 4 Eden Road Notes REPORT BACKS The rosters for Report Backs with teachers are on the classroom doors for you to select a slot. EYE SCREENING Eye screening week starts on Monday. Forms were handed out to Grade N boys and any others new to WPPS since this time last year. If you wish your son to be tested, please collect a form from Mandy. It was a great week out on the fields with victories for the U13D, U12B and U11B. More noteworthy, for two weeks running, the entire U10 age group achieved another clean sweep of victories. Special mention must also go the 1st XI for a superb tour to the Prep Schools Cricket Festival in Johannesburg. This week s fixtures were against Bishops and SACS. Results will be published next week. Tennis The tennis department enjoyed a good week. Despite missing a few boys owing to illness, we still put up a strong challenge in our matches. Our U13Bs deserve a special mention for their convincing win over Rondebosch Boys Prep. Water Polo Water polo had a tough set of fixtures against Rondebosch this week. Good performances again came from the junior sections with special mention going to the U10As for another tight victory. The 1st team played midweek and pulled off a strong defensive performance in the first two chukkas, only to come unstuck for a brief moment in the game. Their improvement generally is to be commended. Pentangular Gala Swimming We have had a busy week in the pool. On Thursday our A-league team participated in the Trophy Gala at SACS. Although there were a number of swimmers missing due to illness, the boys did exceptionally well. The team was placed third behind SACS and Rondebosch. We are proud of our U11 freestyle relay team which broke the record. The team was made up of Alec Rippon, Christopher Pittaway, James Griffiths and Jonathan Roche. Well done! On Tuesday evening, we swam in the annual Pentangular Gala at Rondebosch. This is a team made up from our own annual Championship and Inter-House Gala. Our boys swam their hearts out and put on an exceptionally good show, especially in the relays. Once again the U11 freestyle relay team broke the record; this time the team being made up of Alister Bruce, Christopher Pittaway, James Griffiths and Jonathan Roche. We are exceptionally proud of them. This brings an end to the gala season, but we are looking forward to continuing the good work in the pool. Well done boys! 6 1 st Team Tour to Prep Schools Festival The 1 st XI cricket team recently took part in the annual Prep Schools' Cricket Festival, hosted by St John's Preparatory School in Johannesburg. The first fixture was against a very strong St Stithian s team. With the opposition electing to bat first, our boys put on a great performance with the ball, reducing them to 137/7 after 45 overs. Lightning warnings soon followed, and we were unfortunately not able to capitalise on our great start, as play was called off for the remainder of the day. Our Saturday fixture against the hosts, St John's proved to be a very close affair. A poor batting display on our part, saw us manage a very low score of 68. We attacked with the ball from the start, having the opposition 3/3 after the first five overs. Consistent wicket taking restricted them though they managed to reach our score with seven wickets down. This proved a huge learning curve for the boys, as they realised that more application with the bat could have led to an easy victory. The final day saw us paired up with Cordwalles from Pietermaritzburg. They are traditionally a very strong sporting school, and we were to have our work cut out for us. We bowled first and again, with some great bowling performances, we managed to restrict them to 107/7 in their allotted 35 overs. It was great to see our batsmen taking ownership of their wickets, with Daniel Kirsten (42 not out) and captain Josh Elliott (52 not out) taking us home with a nine wicket victory. Well done to all the boys for their effort shown over the four days, and for being great ambassadors for WPPS. 6 P a g e
