1 22 February 2018 Calling #we vegotthespirit! College Principal The first term is always a frenetic one in the School, with the boys and staff involved in a large number of activities. The upcoming free weekend is well timed for all to recharge their batteries for the second half of the term. The new boys in the College have settled down well and have become fully involved in the life of the school. It is very pleasing to see the enthusiasm and commitment shown thus far; from early morning practices and runs on a Friday, to evening rehearsals for the school production My name is Legion by PG du Plessis. Some parents might think that at times Academic matters have taken a back seat, but this is not true. This coming weekend we have the regional IEB National User Group Conferences in Durban. These alternate between subject conferences at a national and regional level. At these conferences the latest developments per subject and assessment guidelines are discussed. The examination panels from the previous year s Matric papers also provide valuable feedback on the performances and expectations. Furthermore, teachers have direct contact with the examiners and can pose questions directly to the panel.
2 These conferences are therefore very important and beneficial to the matric teachers at Clifton enabling them to prepare the boys well for their final examinations at the end of the year. On behalf of the school I would like to thank the parents who have hosted the visitors to our school recently: the Grade 11 parents who looked after the girls and boys from Dominion High School, from Washington DC in the United States. This is really appreciated and is an important part of the life of the school and is one way in which we can reciprocate for those tours where we are hosted. The friendships which develop from these can last for a lifetime and they enrich the experiences that our boys are exposed to. We will build a guidance and life-skills programme to support students social and emotional health. (COMMUNITY) On the sporting front we look forward to a number of cricket and water polo tours over the 1st weekend in March. Our First XI will be participating in the annual Independent Schools Cricket Festivals, which will be hosted by St Albans. In water polo the 1st Team and u15 s will be going on a tour to Johannesburg to participate in the KES and Parktown Festivals respectively. The support of these tours is greatly appreciated and gives the boys opportunities to see and experience the best sporting traditions and play against some of the top schools in the country. A reminder to prospective parents and boys: our Scholarship Examinations will be written on Thursday 1 March. The College will be closing early on this day at 13h00. These examinations comprise English and Mathematics papers. Looking through some old notes I found a speech given by Dr Stephen Johnson, Head of the Preparatory School at Upper Canada College at a Founders Dinner; which is relevant in Clifton s context as a boys school. The speech is entitled Hearts and Minds: Ten Reasons for a Boys School. As we had the College Open Evening two weeks ago, I thought these points would complement what we do at Clifton as a boys school. In order to develop real learning and develop skills he said that the schools should do four things: (these tie in with our four pillars) We will offer a challenging academic programme that excites both our teachers and our learners. (SCHOLARSHIP) We will provide a broad-based arts programme that encourages students to be creative and take risks. (LEADERSHIP) We will offer a strong physical and athletics programme. (SPORTSMANSHIP) And then his top ten reasons for Boys education: 1. Boys learn at their own pace in elementary school 2. Boys mature later than girls, physically and socially 3. Boys have boundless physical energy 4. Boys are essentially disorganized 5. Boys are creative 6. Boys are good leaders 7. Boys are risk takers 8. Boys make great friends 9. Boys are funny 10. Boys need male role models I hope that we as the teachers and the community of Clifton create an environment for these boys to experience and learn from the above as they grow into Good young men. In conclusion we are pleased to announce the appointment of Mrs Nontando Gumede, as the new isizulu teacher, in the College. She will be joining Clifton at the beginning of the second Term and joins us from Curro Embury College. Enjoy the half term with your sons! GERRY GOEDEKE COLLEGE PRINCIPAL

8 Cameo s Number Sense Clifton is very proud to be part of the Number Sense programme. This is a learner-centred, constructivist way to learn Mathematics, which focuses on skills development and building their number sense, rather than rote learning. The programme is developed by Aarnout Brombacher & Associates and we are very fortunate to have Aarnout visiting us a few times, throughout the year, to share his knowledge and expertise with our teachers. He visited us on Tuesday 13 and Wednesday 14 February, where he did demonstration lessons for the Foundation Phase and Senior Phase, focusing on his new Companion Books which are geared towards Geometry and Data Handling. We look forward to seeing Aarnout later in the year, when he will be back to extend our Mathematics programme even further. Mr Brombacher also met with Mr Knowles to discuss the programme, and Mathematics education in the high school. Interestingly, Messrs Knowles and Brombacher attended the same high school, and have known each other for some years. Mr Knowles last saw Mr Brombacher when he was still a teacher at Westerford High School, in the early 2000s. Art Workshop Over 20 Primary School Art Teachers attended an Art Workshop at Clifton this week. The workshop was held up in the Prep School Art Room.
