2 Executive Headmaster Dear Clifton Family First of all, Happy Valentine's Day! I trust that your day yesterday was marked with love and appreciation by loved ones, and perhaps even by those unknown to you! Our boys and even some staff enjoyed the chance to come to school in civvies whilst supporting a worthy charitable cause in the process. The staff room was decked out with Valentine's goodies, thanks to our "Mums who Pray" group, and red was certainly the colour of the day amongst the staff. At the same time the senior boys enjoyed receiving (and hopefully sending out) the traditional roses. Last week the College hosted the Open Evening, about which Barry Mezher wrote in last week's Clifton Calling. As it was my first Open Evening, I was certainly impressed by the commitment and passion for Clifton School displayed by boys and staff alike. We hosted over 200 families which was most pleasing, and our grade 11 Clifton Ambassadors did a great job engaging with our visitors and taking them on a circular route around the campus, stopping at various places for talks or demonstrations. They finished off in the Ken Mackenzie Hall where the displays showed some of what the College has to offer. I was proud to be part of the evening, and would like to thank the staff and boys involved for their commitment and hard work. A special thanks to our Marketing Department, Barry Mezher and Carol De Matteis, as well as to Shaun McCabe who trained the ambassadors, planned the tour routes and was responsible for the design and layout of the display cubicles. The Open Day for the Prep School takes place on Saturday 3 March. A reminder to all families and friends with boys entering Grades R-7 next year, to please attend and to spread the word. I have enjoyed watching some excellent sports matches over the last two weeks as the College played against DHS and Northwood Boys High, as well as at the Westville Gala. In particular, some of the Cricket matches and Basketball games against Northwood were incredibly exciting, going down to the wire. Our First XI Cricket team showed great character to win by five runs, and the First Basketball won after two sessions of extra time. The First XI Cricket side won the coastal section of the T20 competition, beating Kearsney and Westville in the knock out matches, but unfortunately lost to Hilton College yesterday in the regional final at the Oval in Pietermaritzburg. Nonetheless they have played some really good cricket this season. What has pleased me in all the matches I have seen, is the grit and determination to keep trying hard, as well as the level of sportsmanship. Whilst a number of teams have displayed these qualities, either on the fields, or in the pool, or on the courts, I mention the U15A Cricket side in particular. Likewise, it was a joy to watch some of the Prep sport, especially the First team Waterpolo match against St Stithains Prep. Congratulations to our First Cricket side on winning the prestigious Proctor/ Richards match against Highbury. This last week we played over 20 Cricket matches, a logistical challenge if ever there was one! Well done to the Prep sports staff, and Messrs Price and Ravenscroft in particular, for ensuring that all our boys have opportunities to play. Please follow our FaceBook, Twitter and Instagram pages to keep up with results, including tour results - and if you have photos to submit, please do so. Finally, on this sporting note, well done to those boys and their families, who took part in the Midmar Mile. With the dam at 92% full, the participants would have covered a little more than a mile, but the weather held and a good day was enjoyed.

3 Of course, Clifton Culture is up and running as well, and it is a pleasure to walk past the Sutcliffe Theatre when the choirs are practicing. I look forward to their upcoming performances. With half term approaching, I wish the Clifton Family an enjoyable weekend of family time and of relaxation - as well as some academic catch up time for the senior boys. A number of our teams will be traveling to competitions around the country, and I wish them safe travels and good fortunes. The term does seem to be rushing past, which is what happens in a busy school like ours. Yours faithfully DAVID KNOWLES EXECUTIVE HEADMASTER Meander Messrs Mezher and White will be in Cape Town with the Prep 1st XI for the Interprep Cricket Festival hosted by Western Province Preparatory School. On Friday Mrs Achmad will be at the U9 cricket match being played on the Whitehead Oval. On Saturday Messrs Knowles, Goedeke and Bresler will be at the College cricket matches being played against Sunfoil. Mrs Achmad will be at the Grades R-1 Dads and Lads session on the Whitehead Oval and Mr Boniaszczuk will be at Durban North College for the Grade 2 cricket matches for selected cricketers. Mr Ravenscroft will be with his team for their cricket match against Glenwood Prep. Results All results are for Clifton against the equivalent age groups or teams unless otherwise stated.
