1 The Eagle September 2010 Lodge Dues A Scout is Thrifty Home of the S4 Section Chief Marty Shermetaro The Official Publication of Timuquan Lodge 340 As 2010 comes to an end, it s time to pay your Lodge dues. The collection of these dues is vital as we are financially independent from the council. The dues for 2011 is $15.00 and covers the national fees plus the lodge s administrative costs such as the production and mailing of six publications. The deadline to pay your dues is January 9, Any Arrowman who has not paid their dues by January 9, 2011 will have to pay a late registration fee of $ If a former Arrowman wishes to have their status reinstated, they must pay a reinstatement/late registration fee of $ You must maintain a BSA registration to be an OA member. Lodge Officer Contacts Phone Numbers and Ian Ronshausen, Lodge Chief Eric Frankovitch, Administrative Vice Chief Jakob Fritz, Inductions Vice Chief Jack Vann, Arpeika Chapter Chief Do I need to pay OA dues? The answer is YES. If you were inducted into the OA prior to the September 2010 weekend, your dues will expire and needs to be renewed with payment. A year pass is only $95.00 and covers all four lodge weekends assuring the member of a weekend patch. Section events and functions held away from the weekends will carry their own fee. National Jamboree trip By Taylor Briggs, Troop 2025 SPL At Jamboree we had 36 Scouts attend, and what a blast it was. We had four amazing adults to help us get there. The first 3 days we lived in a hotel called Hotel Harrington. It was a cool hotel because you could fit eight people in one room. We had so much fun playing tricks and what not with each other. The next couple of days we toured Washington, DC. We saw the Vietnam Memorial, the World War II Memorial, the Lincoln Monument, and even got to see the White House. Afterwards, we settled in some cabins near our white water rafting outpost. These cabins were no rinky dink cabins, these were 2-story, air conditioned cabins, we had a lot of fun there, too. After we settled in there, we went white water rafting. The troop had so much fun and (continue on page 5) Kevin Ronayne, Hiyaraba Chapter Chief Matt Durst, Yayi Yaha Chapter Chief Louis McBride, Outina Chapter Chief Brian Martin, Lodge Secretary Andrew Case, Lodge Treasurer Michael Coser, Lodge Historian What s Inside: Chief s Bonnet Adviser s Corner Section Contacts Committee Reports Robert Crown Cleanup Summer Conclave photos Fall Conclave Registration Centennial Flap Future Events Mr. Eric Renker, Lodge Adviser (352) lodgeadviser@timuquanlodge.org Mr. John Baringer, Staff Adviser (727) jbaringe@bsamail.org

2 The Eagle The Official Publication of Timuquan Lodge 340 Page 2 Lodge Chief s Bonnet Brothers, I hope everyone has had an exciting summer. It has been a busy one. Let us be reminded that our next working weekend is right around the corner. Please see the work projects and registration form located further in the back of this newsletter. Remember, those who chose you, need you. So make plans now to be there. WWW, Ian Ronshausen Lodge Chief Timuquan Lodge 340 Lodge Adviser s Corner My Brothers! As we come to the end of another busy and wonderful summer of Service, we enter the active phase for Timuquan Lodge in West Central Florida Council for this year. Please keep your eyes on our mission of Service and be ready to support the many facets of Scouting and our community that we will be tasked to do. First, some "thank yous" for work this summer. Thank you to all of Timuquan Lodge who made Sand Hill Summer Camp the successful and rewarding experience it was for the Scouts who camped with us. Great job! Thanks for all who gave Cheerful Service to the Ocala National Forest through FourCorps and the Timuquan Leadership that made that happen. Well done! Thanks to all who served in the many capacities of Service during the 100th Anniversary Boy Scout Jamboree in Ft AP Hill (our last there). Outstanding! Our September weekend, where we'll welcome new members into our Brotherhood, is scheduled for 10 through 12 September at Sand Hill Scout Reservation. Quickly on its heels will be our One Day of Service to our community scheduled for 16 October. Be prepared to support this effort! That day, too, is the University of Scouting, and we'll need some motivated representatives of the Lodge to serve there. In November, we have two important activities. First, in Service to the Section, Timuquan Lodge is hosting the Section Seminars at Sand Hill Scout Reservation from the 5th through the 7th, and, the next weekend, we will be on staff at the Gulf Ridge Council/West Central Florida Council combined Centennial Camporee at MOSI in Tampa. Some busy times, and we will need your support and dedication to Cheerful Service to pull it all off! Coming up next summer it only gets better! First, the Order of the Arrow will resume its Indian Summer gatherings from 1-6 August at the Ridgecrest Conference Center in Ridgecrest, NC. More than 1,000 Arrowmen from all across the country are expected to join in American Indian activities and induction and Lodge operations training. Second, "SummitCorps - The New River Experience will provide Arrowmen an opportunity of service at the New River Gorge National River in West Virginia. Cheerful service projects will include upgrading the trail bed of the Garden Grand Hike and Bike Trail to invasive species removal. The Garden Grand Hike and Bike Trail connects the New River Gorge National River and will run adjacent to the Boy Scout's new high adventure base and home of the Jamboree - The Summit: The Bechtel Family National Reserve. Lodge contingents have a choice of four sessions to attend - 1) July 3-9, 2) July 10-16, 3) July 17-23, and 4) July Similar to ArrowCorps5 and our High Adventure programs, the week will consist of service and recreation opportunities." I need to share a word about integrity with you. We operate under a number of rules, starting with the National standards, going to Section guidelines, and, finally, our own Lodge By-Laws. The purpose of these rules is two-fold. First, they set standards of behavior and process that are consistent from situation to situation, from Scout to Scout. By using these rules, we set the bar for our membership and keep it the same to provide that level of honor and honesty that makes us worthy of the title "Brother." Second, they provide a framework for decisions that include considerations of our traditions, our integrity, and the best interests of the youth we serve. While the circumstances that bring these comments will remain vague, please understand that decisions made by your Lodge leadership are not made without consideration of their historical basis and thoughtful reflection on their impact within and without the Lodge. Thank you all for your support of Scouting, your tireless dedication to the Lodge, and your friendship in our Brotherhood of Cheerful Service! Yours in Service, Eric Renker, Lodge Adviser

Brothers, we are still looking for chairmen for many different committees such as the camping promotions committee and several others. Hiyaraba Chapter Report Kevin Ronayne, Hiyaraba Chapter Chief Mr. Ken Knous, Chapter Adviser I would like to start by thanking you for electing me as your Chapter Chief. We just had our summer fun meeting at the Scout hut, and I thank all of you who came. If you missed it, that s ok because there will plenty of other chances to have fun with the chapter. For example, this year we will be hosting Section Seminars. This is a big challenge for us to take on in such short notice, but since we are one of the best lodges in the section, I know we will be able to accomplish this feat. So as a member of Hiyaraba, I m asking you all to fulfill your commitment of cheerful service by helping the lodge put on another successful event. S4 Seminars is November 6-8. Our Fall Conclave is coming up. It will be held on September at Sand Hill. The theme for the weekend will be Casino so bring your best poker face and get ready to have some fun. In other chapter news, our meetings are now held on the second Thursday of each month at Troop 26 s Scout Hut on Georgia Avenue and 11 th Street in downtown Palm Harbor. I invite you all to represent your troop by being an active member in our chapter. We are also having a sale on chapter t-shirts. Our tan long sleeve shirts are $5 and our brown ones are $10. We need to sell all of these shirts before we can design new ones. I would also like to make a list of OA Reps, so please me the name of the OA Rep for your troop. I look forward to seeing you all at the Fall Conclave and Seminars. WWW, Kevin Ronayne Chapter Chief, Hiyaraba Chapter

We have held several elections in the past few months. Starting in September, our chapter meetings will be held the first Thursday of every month at Crossroads Christian in Largo. Activities, Kevin Cormier Mrs. Jan Shermetaro, Adviser Hello Brothers, The Summer Conclave was a great success for the activities committee, and we added some new members to the committee. Our theme was Sports, and we had all sorts of fun sports games. We had cornhole, ladder golf, bowling, and ping pong. We had our sports tournament, and Hiyaraba took first place. Arpeika and Outina tied for second. We will be having a sports trivia tie breaker between the two second place chapters at the Fall Conclave. The points won during the tournament will be placed toward the quest for the silver arrow at the Spring Fellowship. The weekend tournament will count as just as many points as one game at the Fellowship. Looking into the near future, the Fall Conclave is coming up, and the activities committee has planned a Casino theme. Bring your gaming spirit, and hopefully lady luck is with you! See you there! National Jamboree trip (from front page) we even went through class 5 rapids. At the end of our rafting trip, it started raining while we were still on the rapids. That was such a cool experience because how often does it rain when you re rafting? The next day we were on our way to the 2010 National Scout Jamboree in Fort A.P Hill. What an awesome place to be, surrounded by 50,000 Scouts and each troop from a different state in the United States of America. We met people from Arizona, Washington, and Oregon. We even met troops from Columbia, Malaysia, and even Sweden. Sweden is also hosting the next World Jamboree. In conclusion the troop had a successful trip, and what an adventure. I bet most Scouts and Scouters were disappointed that the President didn't show up, but hey what can you do? He's a busy man. All I can say is, we had a great time, and it was an adventure to remember. Great job troop Adults were: George Martin Karl Bodgan Bill Jones and Brandon Thebeau Thank you, Taylor Briggs

Robert Crown Cleanup A Success By Travis Johnston, North Scout Sertoma Club President All Scouters know about Sand Hill Scout Reservation and Camp Soule, but many do not know about the 18 acre Camp Robert Crown in Pasco County. The property was acquired by the West Central Florida Council in Plans were made to turn this property into a Scout Sea Base but were cut short due to county zoning requirements. After years of the property sitting vacant, the property became a hot spot for vagrants and partiers leaving behind trash and lots of it. Since zoning requirements would keep us from ever building this property into a Scout camp, it was then decided by the council Executive board to sell the property. The property would be sold to the Pasco County Environmental Lands Department. In order for the property to be considered Environmental Property, it had to be free of all trash and debris. That s where we came in the picture. On July 17 th, sixteen members of Timuquan Lodge and the North Scout Sertoma Club showed up to lend a hand to the large scale cleanup of WCFC s Camp Robert Crown. It was a very hot July day but we still managed to get the property cleaned up. All in all 40 yards of trash were removed and over 115 hours of service were given. A special thanks goes out to Danny Echols of Better Than Dirt, who supplied the 40 yard dumpster and picked up debris all day with his large track hoe machine. The county says immediate plans for the property include fencing off the entire property and eradicating the invasive Brazilian Pepper Trees. Later on down the road plans include a shelter, and having a boardwalk going thru the property, connecting it to the Robert Crown Wilderness area.
