2 THE WESTER ELCHIES FISHINGS, RIVER SPEY, MORAYSHIRE A share in one of the most attractive and famous beats on the River Spey 2.4 miles of single bank fishing. 3 weeks syndicated ownership of the Wester Elchies Fishings are available for 3 rods comprising week 3, week 12 and week 21. Situation The Wester Elchies Fishings are one of the most scenic and productive beats on the river and comprise 2.42 miles of the north bank of the River Spey extending upstream from the Victoria Suspension Bridge in Aberlour as far as Laggan House. The fishings are bounded downstream by the Lower Wester Elchies beat and upstream by the Carron and Laggan beats. On the opposite bank are the Delagyle (4 rod) and Kinermony (3 rod) beats. The River Spey is one of the best known salmon rivers in the United Kingdom which has traditionally provided excellent spring and summer salmon fishing. The Wester Elchies beat, only 20 miles from the sea, had originally been fished on a 7 rod basis and has 14 named pools. Since the syndicated ownership the fishings now operate on a 6 rod basis. Facilities for fishermen in the area are second to none. Aberlour provides everyday amenities including a supermarket, post office, chemist, doctor s surgery, butcher and a range of shops and cafes. The recently refurbished Craigellachie Hotel and the smaller Archiestown Hotel have always been popular with fishermen. There is also a good range of self-catering and bed & breakfast accommodation in the area. Access to the area is good with a range of national and some international flights from Aberdeen and Inverness, both just over an hour s drive from Aberlour. Wester Elchies is in the heart of Speyside which is renowned for its beautiful scenery and there are numerous facilities within the beautiful countryside including long distance footpaths, mountain bike trails, shooting, stalking and the famous malt whisky trail as well as numerous golf courses in the area. Historical Note The Wester Elchies Fishings were owned for about 40 years up until 1993 by the late Sir John Moores. The fishings are well renowned and referred to by John Ashley Cooper in the Great Salmon Rivers of Scotland as being amongst the beats described as the cream of the Spey a wonderful river, here cradled in an unsurpassable setting. If one was asked to single out any one beat as being of surpassing attraction above all others, this would indeed be a difficult task. If pressed one might cite Ballindalloch or Wester Elchies as being second to none Wester Elchies has perhaps the finest pools of all. Such pools as Dailuaine, Pol Ma Cree, Delagyle and The Rhynd, make an unforgettable impression and can nowhere be surpassed. General Information Local Information The fishing season on the River Spey opens on 11 February and closes on 30 September. Unlike many other Scottish salmon rivers the Spey has an unusually long and productive season and enjoys reasonable water levels throughout the summer as a result of snow melt from the massive catchment area of the Cairngorms. River Bed and Bank The river bed approximately to the medium filum and the bank are owned and are included in the sale of the fishing rights. Also owned and included in the sale are the boathouse (occupied by the ghillie) and the fishing huts. Catch Record The Wester Elchies Fishing is for 6 rods of single bank fishing. An arrangement is in place that the rods swap over at lunchtime so that all 6 rods fish the whole beat. The catch returns listed below are for the 6 rods and should therefore be halved for the 3 rods that are available for sale as described in these particulars. 5 Year Average Catch Week 3 Week 12 Week Total Average Year Average Full details of the catch records are available on the Wester Elchies website The catch return is for grilse and salmon. No records are available for sea trout although a reasonable number are caught each year. Method of Fishing Anglers are expected to follow the Spey Board s Conservation Policy as a minimum and anglers should expect to fish by fly only. The water is divided into two beats, the upper beat known as The Delene beat and the lower as The Shuan

3 beat. 3 rods fish each beat and will rotate on a morning/ afternoon basis. The Pools The pools are: The Delene beat Dalbrek, Pool-o-Brock, Horse Hole, Clarnick, Delene, Pol-Ma-Cree, Delagyle. The Shuan beat Geantree, Little Turn, Rhynd, Hendry s Cast, Pool Shuan, Upper Craig, Boat Pool. Note 1: There is an informal arrangement with Kinermony opposite whereby Kinermony alone fishes the Dykie Pool and Wester Elchie alone fishes Hendry s Cast. Note 2: Both Delagyle and Kinermony beats on the opposite banks are held in private ownership and let on a traditional weekly basis. The Ghillie The Wester Elchies beat is ghillied by Sam Bremner who occupies the boathouse opposite the Aberlour Suspension Bridge. Fishing Huts There are two fishing huts at Delagyle Pool and a number of shelters elsewhere. Both have cooking and toilet facilities. Access There is a good vehicular access on hard tracks to all but the two top pools at the west end of the beat. These pools are only a short walk from the track. Spey Fishery Board The Board have responsibility under the Salmon and Freshwater Fisheries (Consolidation) (Scotland) Act 2003 to protect, enhance and conserve the Atlantic salmon and sea trout stocks in the Spey catchment. They have an ongoing research programme and carry out regular survey work on the river. Further details can be obtained from their website Ownership The fishing rights are owned by pro indiviso owners with each week being divided into two separate shares of 3 rods each. The pro indiviso owners are bound by a Deed of Conditions which have been drawn up and are recorded. Further details can be obtained from the selling agents. Annual Management Charge Each pro indiviso syndicate member is required to pay an annual management charge towards the upkeep of the fishings. The charge is banded over four periods to reflect the quality of the fishing. The charge includes the ghillie s wage, Fishery Board assessment, bank, access and other repairs etc. The management charges are as follows: Week in 2014 for 3 rods. Week Week 21-1,380. The above are plus VAT. Riverbank The bank and bed of the river to the medium filum along the entire length are owned which confirms the riparian owner with trout fishing rights. In addition a wooded area extending to approximately 5 acres surrounding the two fishing huts is owned. After about 1.5 miles turn left just after the Macallan distillery signed to Nether Ringorm. Continue straight along this road. Do not turn left signposted to Lower West Elchies.
