I guess Oklahoma weather has a mind of her own. Hopefully the last few freezes of the year are behind us and our fair weather riding can begin. February may be the shortest month of the year, but Chapter M packed it full of activity. We started the month off by visiting Chapter E in Tulsa. We always have a good time when we go to their gathering. The next week it was our turn for our chapter gathering. We celebrated birthdays and an anniversary, and welcomed some our friends from Chapter E. Wayne and Brenda Thomas from Cookson, OK, a couple of newbies to the gathering, attended our gathering also. Wayne provided the group with a presentation on Aspen Trailers. They are the coolest little camping trailers that can be pulled behind a motorcycle. By the time the gathering was over we had gained a new sponsor! I m hoping that we can persuade them into becoming a part of the Chapter M family. On February 12 th we had a Sweetheart Ride to Charlie s Chicken in Fort Gibson. They really do have one of the best buffets around. The next night it was off to Hamlin s for a U.S. Law Seminar. Whew, starting to get a little tired but we aren t finished yet. On February 25 th we jetted off to Cushing America for a little Chapter X Anniversary. We had hotdogs and burgers, games and prizes, and lots of time with good friends! A great way to end a month. So now it s March and also time for another monthly gathering on the 9 th. I hope to see you all there. We are heading out to attend Chapter E s Anniversary on March 5 th in Jenks. This is Harry s first anniversary as CD and it promised to be a fun time. Chapter M will be hosting our annual anniversary the next Saturday, March 11 th, at Indian Capital Tech Center in beautiful Muskogee starting at 2 pm. So drag on those bell bottom jeans and dust off the tie dyed shirt and join us for a swing hippie party. If you attended last year you know we have a great time. March 2017 OK Chapter M P a g e 2

Let s get together and take advantage of some of the scenic routes that he has planned, and of course he ll take us to some good dining establishments. I hope to see you this month. 5 Well spring is only a few weeks off and the weather is beginning to warm up a lot. So much that there has already been a couple of rides. March is our anniversary month and that happens on the 11th, I hope to see all of our members there for a real good time. Also in March there are some rides on the calendar that will be some fun trips with new scenery to explore and new and different places to see. I'm hoping that a lot of our members along with our friends from other Chapters will make that extra effort to go on these rides. That would be great and also be a good opportunity to blow out some of the cobwebs and circulate the oil in the crankcase, but most of all it will be a chance to have some fun with friends. Having fun safely with friends, new and old, is what it s all about, but hard to do if you re not there. So check out your bikes and make no other plans except to come and ride with your friends. 7 Well you re stuck with us for one more year. I personally think this is a good idea. The first year you don t really know what is expected of you and it takes a while to get your feet under you. Yeah, it s cool to be recognized at the meetings and having special treatment, but there is so much more to it. This is an entry position to the inner workings of the GWRRA. Chapter, District, National all have their places and I m glad there are people that consider the higher levels a challenge and want to participate at that level. Karen and I are Chapter wonks. We were honored to be in the running for District, but we are both kind of relieved that we weren t selected. That may sound a little weird to be happy that you didn t win, but we realized that if we were the district level it would make us divide our time between Chapter level and District. Chapter events, Oklahoma Wind Drill Team performances, and grandchildren, along with Run for the Wall, will fill up our calendar and tax the budget. Also I m still working on the house and working as a mechanic at the Stilwell Hardware. That pretty much fills up our schedule. 9 Spring is here in Oklahoma! The days are getting longer.the weather is getting warmer and Motorcycles are getting their blankets pulled off and prepared to ride for another season, or ARE they? Are you checking the things you should or just kicking the tires and lighting the fire? Just as important are your riding skills. Haven t been on the bike for a while and skills deteriorate rather quickly. Your brain still thinks you rode yesterday, but the muscle memory and processing information and awareness are sorely below optimum. Handle that! Take a course. Do your due diligence at the parking lot. If you can t ride confidently at slow speed, you re kidding yourself to think you should be riding fast. You re just kidding yourself if you think the gyroscopic effect that helps keep the motorcycle up at speed will overcome poor technique. 11 CHANGES TO LEVELS PROGRAM A recent indicated to the Chapter Educators that there were a number of courses that would NOT be allowed for recertification of the Levels Program. I believe that most of us were already aware that the GWRRA Advanced Rider Course Renewal was already one of those courses. Other courses on the list included the Oklahoma Highway Patrol s Street Riding (OHPSR) course that many of us have attended in the past as well as the Motorcycle Safety Foundation s (MSF) Basic Rider Course 2 (BRC2). The thought process behind this decision is that a rider should have a refresher classroom in addition to practicing rider skills at least every 6 years. I certainly agree with that thought process, however there are some concerns that I am still addressing with the Rider Program leadership. The MSF actually has two separate BRC2 courses. The Basic Rider Course (or BRC) is a two-day program that is conducted for beginner riders on small, course-provided motorcycles, typically 125 or 250cc motorcycles. While this is actually a VERY good course, the first several exercises are based around someone who has NEVER thrown a leg over a motorcycle. These exercises deal with this is the clutch, this is the brake, this is the light switch, this is your turn signal, this is your engine cut-off switch, etc. The second-day classroom exercises are more street strategies and more advanced riding skills. The BRC2 is typically done on the student s bike and is based wholly on the premise that a rider is somewhat experienced before ever entering the class. The BRC2 has a licensing waiver course and another that is BRC2 Skill Practice course. These two courses are the basis around which the GWRRA s Advanced Rider Course (ARC) and the Advanced Rider Course-Renewal (ARC-R) are based on. Currently, the GWRRA Levels Program will NOT accept back-to-back OHPSR s or BRC2 courses for purposes of remaining current in the Levels Program. Within Chapter M alone, this decision affects 9 of our members. If you took the OHPSR last time, you MUST take an ARC with GWRRA or a BRC with the MSF. The BRC is currently available through several sources. Each of these sources have different pricing schedules, but all are comparable. Brown s Driving School offers the BRC for $290 in Tulsa. Heart of Oklahoma Motorcycle Training is starting in Muskogee and they offer the same course for $300 for each rider. As you can see, the best price is with GWRRA s ARC course which will be offered at Wing Ding in Grapevine, Texas over the Labor Day week so once again GWRRA is giving you the most bang for your buck. I also noticed that 6 of our members enrolled in the Levels Program need a Co-Rider Seminar this year to remain current in the Levels Program or move up from Level I to Level II. Your chapter team has been discussing additional training this year and we will certainly make that course available to you as one of our offerings so please don t miss it. On 19 February, I completed the new Instructor Certification Training Program and am now certified to present the additional 30 training modules that GWRRA offers so look for some of those classes in the near future as well. The weather is up and down like a yoyo and there are PLENTY of great riding days, so let s get them out and blow the dust off of them. As always, ride safe and keep the shiny side up!
