3 INTRODUCING LIONS PRIDE By now we hope you have received an regarding a program we at Palm Beach Currumbin Junior Australian Football Club are proud to introduce, the new Lions Pride Initiative. The Lions Pride Initiative is a new club program developed in partnership with Tugun Community Bank Branch Bendigo Bank. The Lions Pride Initiative will kick off at this season s awards and presentation evenings. The primary focus of the program is our young athletes and their sense of belonging in our club. It is about defining the principles that we value as a club. It is about defining those values internally and rewarding those players who display the best qualities of our club. It is also about expressing the values of PBCJAFC externally by declaring what it means to be a Palmy Junior Lion. The initiative is designed to ensure our players show commitment, support each other and foster a great sense of team and belonging. It is about defining and encouraging a proud culture in our young athletes. Tugun Community Bank Branch is proud to be associated with such an important initiative which encourages respect, teamwork and an active lifestyle in the younger members of our community. To show the importance of this initiative, the club will reward those players who display the qualities and values expected of them as Lions. LIONS PRIDE CRITERIA Teamwork Leadership Friendliness Training Commitment Sportsmanship Effort Manners Values Language The Lions Pride Award will be presented for the first time this year at our Presentation and Awards nights to the players, as judged by our coaches and managers against a set criteria. 3

U12 LIONS STAR FOR QLD 5 Well done to our PBCJAFC representatives in the QLD Years team who are playing in the School Sport Australia AFL National Championships! Junior Lions Harry Bestt, Jed Walter, and Will Graham are playing some great games for our State in Darwin. 6 LIONESSES STAR IN X-COUNTRY 6 Two of our girls competed in the National Cross Country for Queensland last weekend in Tasmania and they did extremely well. Kyah Anderson from our PBCJAFC U11s Girls came first in the U/10s National Cross Country Championships. Ruby Hughes from our PBCJAFC U13s Girls team came 2nd in the U/11 girls National Cross Country Championships. 6

GOOD FOR SPORTS We have had some great games played at our PBCJAFC home at Salk Oval this season, conducted in fairness and with a friendly spirit that exemplifies what junior AFL is all about. Among those were our U10 PBC Lions who shared a photo here with Ormeau U10s, umpire Blake Wickens, and club coaches at the end of their second last game of the season. 7 Here s another of our U10 PBC Lions teams who played Broadbeach in their second last game of footy for the season. 7

8 SUNS ARE COMING TO PBCJAFC The Gold Coast Suns will be at PBCJAFC training on Tuesday August 22 from 4:30pm. Be sure to have a chat with some of the AFL players who will be on the ground during training and be available after for Q&A. We are delighted the Gold Coast Suns can share their time with our players to talk about their careers, talent pathways, and tips for making it in the AFL. 8

GAME DAY WRAP U16 (1) 9 Team Name U16 Division 1 Date Saturday, August 12 Southport Southport Score Southport def PBC Best Players Riley Budek, Coby Williams, Aiden McCabe, Lachy Jolly, Bronson Howard Coach s Comments This week we travelled up the highway for a 2pm clash against arch rival Southport. Although we had beaten them twice this year they were close encounters which were fiercely contested and this game shaped as a preview to the finals. Things didn t start well before the game when we lost Fletcher Low to the Flu and Callan Vandendriest injured his ankle before the game and couldn t take part in the game. The first quarter started in disaster for us. Southport turned up to play and our lads were shell shocked at how hard they went in for the ball. At quarter time the scores were to To our credit we fought hard for the remaining 3 quarters kicking 6.3 to Southports 7.8 but at the end of the day our intensity and willingness to pressure the opposition along with our lack of run and carry cost us the game. We must rebound quickly and put this game behind us if we are to overcome our demons and be ready for the finals. We WILL NOT let this game define our season and we WILL rise to the challenge that s before us. 9

GAME DAY WRAP U16 (2) 10 Team Name U16 Division 2 Date Saturday August 12, 2017 TWC/Labrador PBC, Salk Oval Score PBC def TWC/Labrador Goal Scorers Sam Frazer 4, Brynn Evans 1, Liam Suddes 2, Konrad Schenk 1, Riley Hunter 1, Finnley Stanger 1 Best Players Liam Suddes, Jason Wyer, Konrad Schenk, James Huntley Chipper, Sam Shaw, Riley Hunter, Kohl Holland, Sam Frazer, Felix Oakley Hanes Magic Moments Riley s goal in last quarter hard running, slammed ball on boot 45 out for the 6 points. Coach s Comments Finnleys run chase end to end to pressure the opposition ball carrier. Last game for the normal rounds. A good start, high forward pressure and intensity that remained throughout the 4 quarters got the lads a great win. Our dominating rucks Felix and Kohl were a key factor in our centre clearances giving our full forward big Sam plenty of quality fwd 50 entries. The run and carry from the likes of Riley, Jason and Suddsy was exceptional. Thanks to the U14 contingency Ryan and Sean playing impressive footy. Also huge thanks Craig Frazer for stepping in to the coaching role for the day 10

GAME DAY WRAP U14 (1) 11 Team Name Under 14 Division 1 Date Saturday August 12, 2017 Broadbeach PBC, Salk Oval Score PBC def Broadbeach

GAME DAY WRAP U14 (2) 12 Team Name U14 Division 2 Date Saturday August 12, 2017 Carrara Black PBC, Salk Oval Score Carrara def PBC Best Players Will G, Ethan H, Mitch, Max, Jordan, Gannas, Blake, Josh, Haydos Magic Moments We are still equal 2nd on the ladder despite this week s loss to Carrara. Coach Adam is a whiz in play strategy, player positioning and how to get the upper hand in a game but unfortunately even his legendness was no match for the dreaded virus which took over our team this week. The team was depleted from the start with Ethan K and Harry out succumbing to the virus and Jarrah out through injury. We also played well despite Haydos and Nat being unwell from the virus, Kai dizzy from a head clash and Luke looking sicker the more the game went on. The team was captained by Will G this week and he had his best game of the season. Speaking of another best game of the season, Ethan H was on fire. He had a cracker! Harry was to receive his 50 Match game honour this week but due to illness it will be the next home game Harry. Special mention to Liam who was our tackling sensation in this game and to Blake who was a master this week in doing sensational to and fro moves to get away from the opposition. Special mention also to our four goal scorers: Boggy, Haydos, Jo and Max. Despite our loss it was a fantastic team effort. Until round 16 where we will meet 5th placed Southport. 12

GAME DAY WRAP U12 (1) 13 Team Name Under 12 Division 1 Date Saturday August 12, 2017 Southport Southport Score Southport def PBC Best Players Harper Stanger, Coby Collins, Ethan Read, Luke Rana-Smith, Austin Schenk, Jack Stringer, Jack Fox, Finn Hay, Herb Winter. Coach s Comments Tough week again with troops away and only 1 reserve and playing the top side for the third time at their ground and none at ours? Having said that the boys played their hearts out and were just beaten by the better side on that particular day. It was actually a great learning game and the boys know the effort and intensity that they need to all put in to beat any side anywhere! The teamwork on display was amazing and it will stand us in good stead for the finals and the boys future footy experiences. With one game to go we are playing for second position and the double finals chance this weekend so please let us know if you cannot play. We have had lowish numbers at training (with legitimate excuses so all good) but it does make it hard to run drills with players in positions that they will be playing finals footy so please make the effort to get to all training sessions for the rest of the year so that you don t miss out to a teammate who knows what is required in that role. As always, if you cannot make training please just send a text! Our players are jumping out of their skins for finals so let s also step up the cheering for our boys during games! Go Lions!! 13

GAME DAY WRAP U12 (2) 14 Team Name Under 12 Division 2 Date Saturday August 12, 2017 Coomera Coomera Score PBC def Coomera Best Players Whole team. Coach s Comments Special mention Sam Fog- rucked all day by himself in a position he does not normally play. Set the tone for the team with an excellent game and competing on every level- good one Sam. Well, we finally had a clash with the 1 s and with a number of players already unavailable we ended up with only 5 regular players and looking at a forfeit. So a great thanks to Tub and Gavin and all the Under 11 boys who kindly agreed to fill in. Some of the boys played 3 games on the weekend, Wow great stuff boys. An excellent example of how to help the club out in a time of need. I was confident going in we would give a good account of ourselves however, I was unsure if we could pull off a win. Pre-Game focus We kept things simple with a focus of wining the ball and get it going our way. Well did we cause a boil over!! Everyone in the team stepped up and were excellent in every aspect of the game. After a close first half of quarter one, the boys essentially just ground down then opposition with a relentless attack on the ball. On the back of us wining the football and keeping it in our forward half we were then able to defensively set up the wall and kept the opposition form scoring- well done. It was a determined effort from our undersized side and all the parents and coaches on hand could not have been more proud of the effort and skills on display by the team. Soo Awesome!! Only one more game before finals so let s get everyone to training in prep for our finals run. Cheers Brooksy. 14

GAME DAY U11 (MAROON) 15 Team Name Under 11 MAROON Date Sunday August, 2017 Pacific Pines PBC, Salk Oval Score PBC def Pacific Pines (Mercy rule) Magic Moment Maroon team enjoyed playing at home against Pac Pines leading from the start. The boys were very strong in the centres and forwards. Thanks to the Gold players who helped out due to sickness and boys away. The boys were using their skills handballing and kicking to each other. The backs were strong in defence and were very quick to get the ball back to the other end. Everyone enjoyed the friendly game GAME DAY WRAP U11 (GOLD) Team Name Under 11 GOLD Date Saturday, August 12, 2017 Coomera Coomera Score PBC def (mercy rule) Magic Moment The Golds were bolstered by some Maroons players when they took on Coomera on Saturday. Our Lions dominated from the outset with coach Tub rotating players through all sections of the field. The boys revelled in the opportunity to play in different positions. The mid-field trio of Nelson, Zeb and Sage were on fire, and Zac, who played big as usual, was a real livewire. 15

GAME DAY U10 (GOLD) 16 Team Name Under 10 GOLD Date Sunday August 13, 2017 Broadbeach Blue PBC, Salk Oval Captain Lachlan Coach s Comments One more game to go boys, last week we were outplayed by a bigger opposition. This week we play our last game and I'm sure we all want to finish on a high. Just want to say thanks to all the mums and dads that have helped us throughout the season. Well done to Tully and Callum for receiving the match awards. 16

GAME DAY U10 (MAROON) Team Name Under 10 MAROON Date Sunday August 13, 2017 Ormeau Red PBC, Salk Oval Captain Magic Moment GAME DAY U10 (BLUE) 17 Team Name Under 10 BLUE Date Sunday August 13, 2017 Broadbeach White PBC, Salk Oval Captain Max Pastor Magic Moment The Palmy boys started quite hot on the field in more ways than one. It was an 11am game so the sun was quite hot and the boys were on fire. They played so well as a team using all their skills they have learnt over the season. Lots of hand balling between players, kicking straight to their mates and attacking the ball. Great game boys, well done!! 17

GAME DAY U9 (MAROON) 18 Team Name Under 9 MAROON Date Sunday August 13, 2017 Broadbeach White PBC, Salk Oval Captain Coach s Comments GAME DAY U9 (GOLD) Team Name Under 9 GOLD Date Sunday August 13, 2017 Captain Coach s Comments Broadbeach Yellow PBC, Salk Oval GAME DAY U9 (MAROON) Team Name Under 9 MAROON Date Sunday August 13, 2017 Ormeau Blue PBC, Salk Oval Captain Coach s Comments 18

GAME DAY WRAP U15 (GIRLS) 19 Team Name Under 15 Girls Date Sunday August 13, 2017 Tweed/Coolangatta TWC Score PBC def TWC Goal Scorers Maddison, Mia, Zarli W, Lily and Matisse Best Players Zali C, Lily, Charlotte, Maddison, Khloe, Lexie, Charlie and Macka Magic Moment Our Lionesses encouragement towards each other. Coach s Comments It was an early start for our Lionesses on Sunday, unfortunately Cooly didn t have a full team so we had 7 on the bench and to the girls credit they worked out their rotations and knew when to switch as we had a lot of girls to rotate. The encouragement from all the girls towards each other was pleasing to see and we are finally getting in and congratulating each other after goals and looking after their fellow Lionesses on the field. We came away with the win and are looking forward to our last game against Labrador this week. 19

DAY WRAP U13 (GIRLS) 20 Team Name U13 Girls Date Saturday August 12, 2017 Pacific Pines Pacific Pines Score PBC def Pac Pines Goal Scorers Bella, Piper, Ash, Zarli and Lily W Best Players Lily W, Piper, Ash, Zarli and Eleanor Magic Moment Lily W Kicking 3 goals!! Coach s Comments Our Lionesses played at Pacific Pines Saturday morning coming out with a roar and had a great lead at quarter time. The girls played some fantastic footy and dominated the second quarter as well. Unfortunately, after half time not having a bench showed with Pac Pines kicking some quick goals and got within 10 points but the girls dug deep and came away with the win. The girls kicked some great goals especially Lily W who was on fire. This week s quote was: Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference between football success and football failure. 20

GAME DAY WRAP U11 (GIRLS) Team Name Under 11 Girls Date Friday August 11, 2017 Tweed Coolangatta Magic Moment Coach s Comments TWC Danika taking some awesome marks Our Girls played Coolangatta in a late game on Friday night and it was a tough game with Coolangatta dominating, but our girls never gave up and played their absolute best until the end. 21 Our Lionesses took some great marks and put on some big tackles. Unfortunately, they weren t always rewarded. We are now looking forward to our last game against Surfers Paradise. Congratulations to Danika for receiving the award this week. 21
