Director of Sport Term 3 Week 5 12 August Football 2015 Herald Sun Shield Grand Final St Patrick s College (72) d Essendon Keilor College 6.7 (43) Goal Kickers: Jackson Carrick 2, Jacob Wheelahan 2, Jacob Hopper 1, Hamish Coulton 1, Daniel Rioli 1, Leigh Spiteri 1, Tanner Blackney-Noter 1, Bailey Veale Best Players: Joel Cowan, Ben Hurley, Jacob Hopper, Ben Simpson, Ben Lusby, Hasker Dawborn, Joe Dodd, Jake McQueen St Patrick s College has completed the six-peat after beating Essendon Keilor College by 29 points in the Herald Sun Shield Grand Final at Port Melbourne on Saturday afternoon. The underdogs started strongly and controlled the game early, with Essendon Keilor captain Jayden Ranno getting the ball rolling for his side. However SPC was able to get some reward for effort late in the first quarter by kicking three late goals to take a handy lead into the first change. With Jacob Hopper being heavily tagged by two, and at times even three players at times, it released players like Joel Cowan and Ben Lusby to have a significant impact on the game. The game was played in a congested manner, and both teams struggled to find space through the middle in the first half. Despite the tight contest around the ground, the Paddy Boys took a 20-point lead into the main break. Essendon Keilor came out after half time all guns blazing but was unable to capitalise on the scoreboard.with the pressure building on the favourites, a brain fade followed from Yestin Eades who conceded a 50-metre penalty following a marking incident. This provided EKC with a shot on goal 15 metres out to cut the margin back to 11 points. A big emphasis was placed by St Pat s coach Mr Howard Clark at the three quarter time huddle on the team s 2015 call to arms: Honour the Tradition, Commitment to the Team. The players responded, piling on four goals in the last quarter in an emphatic display of schoolboy football. The back six for SPC stood up all day with Hasker Dawborn and Ben Hurley willing themselves to every contest possible while Joe Dodd, Jake McQueen and Ben Simpson were crucial across half back. Down forward it was Jackson Carrick who provided spectators with potentially a moment to remember as he nearly touched the stars with an incredible attempt at a mark. He kicked two goals and, alongside Jacob Wheelahan who was playing his first game of football after several weeks due to injury, was among the most productive forwards on the ground. The feel-good story of the day goes to Bailey Veale. Veale, who was an emergency in last year s premiership side, was in terrific form over the first five rounds of the year before a hamstring injury interrupted his season. Veale came on late in the last quarter and kicked the sealer for his beloved teammates. Joel Cowan was awarded the Kevin Sheehan Medal for best on ground for the winning side culminating in three best on ground performances in the last three games of the year. The premiership caps off a generation of wins for St Patrick s College, as those in Year 12 have experienced the glory in every one of their years at the College. The SPC Football Program, headed by Mr Howard Clark, has placed an exclamation mark on the title as The best schoolboy side in the country!
Rugby Mr Leigh McKee St Patrick's College 1stXV vs. St Kevin's College 1st XV - Division 1 Grand Final - August 8, 2015 Fulltime 64-5 (HT 33-0) Tries Nicholas Donghi 1 Conversions Cam Tranter 0/1 I would like to commence this final match report with a review of the game itself and not the significance of the occasion. Can I congratulate St Kevin s on a well-deserved victory. No-one will dispute the quality of this St Kevin s side nor the comprehensive nature of their success. This is a side that has gone unbeaten through the season and done so in impressive fashion. History books will recall a record breaking victory for St Kevin s, their fourth consecutive VSRU 1stXV Division I Grand Final triumph, in their 21st consecutive final appearance. In the build-up to the game I said that it was mission difficult, not mission impossible. The early exchanges were going to be crucial, we would need to build scoreboard pressure and play at our very best. Take nothing away from our brave young men, who have risen and conquered almost all challenges that have been presented but, we were not at our best. Early territory and possession belonged to SPC but we were not able to convert this into points. If we lacked a cutting edge in attack we were well off our defensive best poor tackle technique, static defence and ill-discipline invited pressure from St Kevin s, which ultimately led to a number of scores in the first term. It would be unfair to say heads dropped but simply this was the case on the cusp of halftime in a period that decided the outcome of this contest. Having finally conceded after concerted opposition pressure we needed to see out the last moments of the first half however from the resulting restart St Kevin s launched a length of the field score and then repeated this feat to score 14points and blow out the margin to 33-0 at the interval. We had spoken of accountability during the week and this was again the key message at halftime along with the finer nuances identified from play. The second half was severely interrupted by a serious injury to St Patrick's College winger, Jack Harrison, that resulted in an ambulance being called. Fortunately this was more precautionary and early prognosis from the hospital is positive. After the game resumed play became more open as both sides tired. Changes from the bench were made by both coaches but this would ultimately highlight the strength in depth of St Kevin s who continued their scoreboard dominance. On a pleasing note our boys crossed the whitewash for our first score of both the game and this season in games against St Kevin s in a moment of entertaining backline play, culminating in a score for fullback Nicholas Donghi who looked the most dangerous threat all afternoon for the boys from Ballarat. The resulting conversion was the final act of the game and so the kick was given to one of our departing Year12s but was unfortunately missed. The whistle blew St Kevin s had won. We are beaten but not knocked out. There was disappointment but I was quick to bring our whole rugby community together to once more highlight the unparalleled success that they had created. It was a special moment, captured on camera, that will live long in my personal memory as I am sure it will for many others. Ranked ninth upon the conclusion of the 2014 season, we finish this season ranked second. State-wide. Only one side were able to beat us all season. We were unbeaten at home. Fortress Ballarat. The plaudits, accolades could continue and will.
I would like to finish by thanking the many people who assisted in this remarkable season. Our Director of Rugby, Mr Leigh McKee, our two assistants, Ben Shove and Duncan Ritchie. Our conditioning coaches, Matt Morrison and Tom Swan. Our U16 coach, Mr Mick Porter. Our team manager, strapper, first aider, Ms Tam Westwood. Our ground staff, maintenance team. Our Headmaster, Mr John Crowley. The many parents and/or guardians and all families. Amongst these I would like to make special mention of Chris Stevens for his fabulous photography. I hope I haven t forgotten anyone but if I have, you know who you are, and thank you. Last, but absolutely not least, our players. To our Year12s, who pulled on the jersey for the last time today, we thank you for your hard work and unwavering commitment to our program you have paved the way for so much success to follow. I now challenge all those in Year11 and below to be inspired by the accomplishments of our 1stXV and endeavour to strive for this same level you all have it in you. Best: 5 Sean Howard 4 Marcus Kaponga, 3 Nicholas Donghi, 2 Joshua Coward, 1 Brendan Bell
BAS Basketball Ms Tamara Westwood Year SPC White 54 defeated BCC 46 SPC vs Ballarat Clarendon College was a very tightly played game With the lead changing three or four times after St Pats began strongly. College gave us a good game and we actually lost the lead near the end but managed three quick goals to get up and win. The boys played very well and as a team are very strong SPC Blue 47 defeated DC 30 We were down to three available players this week, therefore I'd like to thank Hudson Wilde who came across from SPC White to make up the numbers. With four players, we trekked over to Damascus College. I was a bit worried about the game given that we were down on numbers, however we came out firing. Aiden Wijbenga was our top shooter with 10 points in the first half alone. We scored 16-6 at the half time break - which could have been much more if our shooting was a little more accurate. The second half saw one of the DC players on fire and he was hard to stop given that he was about two foot taller than the SPC boys. Luckily for SPC Blue, we outscored them in the second half The scoring tallies for the team were Aiden Wijbenga 18 points, Hudson Wilde 16 points (you can come play for us anytime!), Sam Fisher 7 points and Lachlan Sultana 6 points. Well done boys. Hopefully we will have a full team next week! SPC Green 38 defeated BG Blue 18 SPC White 46 defeated MCC 11 SPC Mount Clear College was a game played with great sportsmanship on display. SPC White played well as a team considering we had only five players with Hudson assisting SPC Blue. All members communicated well and ensured all were able to score with Jai and Charles scoring 14 each, Joseph 10, Cooper 6 and Macarthur 2. Year SPC Green 28 drew with BG 28 SPC White 54 defeated BCC Black 21 Again, SPC White were dominant against a larger College side. Will Hynes led the way, ably assisted by Jack Conroy and Dechlan Bailey. It was pleasing to see Matt Wilken contribute with many creative passes, setting up shots at the basket. SPC Blue 66 defeated DC 20 SPC White 68 defeated MCC 6 Intermediate SPC Blue (Yr 9) 37 lost to BHS 50 SPC Green (Yr 9) 63 defeated SPC (Yr 9) 36 SPC Blue (Yr 10) 24 lost to BHS 72 SPC Green (Yr 10) 72 defeated MCC 21 SPC (Yr 9) 38 lost to SPC Blue (Yr 9) 45 Senior SPC Blue 48 defeated BG 34 Round 3 of the schedule and a fixture against Ballarat Grammar. The core group of players were available to us, but there were also first games of this season for Jarrod Illig and Tim Liston. Grammar were noticeably physically dominant but the work rate, led by James Halloran, was exceptional and, although some of the work under the offensive basket was
sloppy in parts, the constant pressure created numerous scoring opportunities and this resulted in a strong win against a side that will win more than they lose this season. The focus for next week will be on composure in the key and defensive communication. Two from two the boarders side is gaining momentum. Mr Silcock. SPC Green 41 defeated BCC Red 24 SPC Green 37 defeated BCC Black 33 First V SPC won on forfeit by BHS SPC 70 defeated MCC 42 Still missing Captain Sam Short, the SPC First V team battled it out against the taller team from MCC. The first half was a wonderful display of talent with both teams fighting it out around the basket. SPC s Tanna Blackney-Noter was dominate through the key, piling on 12 half time points, with the scores only 3points apart at the half, SPC 26 to MCC 23. All SPC players hit their strides in the second half, applying defensive pressure with a full court press. Sam McMaster found his range with Max Edwards hitting some timely 3 point shots. MCC could not match the talent of SPC, with the final score reading SPC 70 defeating MCC 42. Leading Scorers for SPC: Tanna Blackney-Noter 21, Jack Walter 12 and Sam McMaster 11. BAS Senior Hockey. Mr Nathan Geaghan SPC 1 defeated BHS 0 SPC 2 drew with BCC 2
