5 Bendigo Community Bank AFL Vic Country I am a Healthy Choices Coach Gone are the days when coaching was restricted to the football field. Nowadays, coaches of all levels provide just as much guidance and leadership off the field, as they would do on game day. With 60% of adults and 25% of children and adolescents in Australia classed as overweight or obese, it has never been more important to make football clubs part of the solution. To help assist with the process, AFL Victoria and VicHealth have joined forces to provide education programs for community junior football coaches to recognise and encourage healthy food and drink choices for long term health both on and off the field. Sport, physical activity and nutrition go hand in hand, so community football clubs play a vital role in helping people lead healthy and active lives. Recognised as leaders and influencers within the team environment in a community football club, coaches are asked to join the I am a Healthy Choices Coach campaign to encourage healthy alternatives to their players. Since Caulfield Bears Under 10 Polars coach, Rowan Brittain attended the AFL Level 1 Junior course where the Nutrition and Hydration module was delivered, his team has made a change to their post-match snack. Rather than sharing a bag of snakes with the kids, the players have a piece of fruit and are continuing to do so regularly after their games for the remainder of the year. This is one coach s effort to educate his players and parents both on and off the field on the importance of healthy living and looking after yourself. Make the switch and choose healthier alternatives today and share a photo of yourself with your team on social media using the hashtag #iamahealthychoicescoach. Whether you are a coach, parent or on the committee of your club, AFL Victoria has a number of fact sheets for you to use to drive the Healthy Choices message. 7 Bendigo Community Bank Footy Preview Take-off for Bombers By Toe Punt Minor Premiers Frankston Bombers begin their assault on the 2016 Nepean League premiership when they host Rosebud at RJ Rowley Reserve on Saturday. The Bombers finished a game clear at the top of the ladder, their only three losses for the season coming at the hands of Somerville (52 points in Rnd 2), Hastings (18 points in Rnd 3) and Sorrento (44 points in Round 10). The Bombers have won their past six matches, including a convincing to victory against Rosebud at Greg Beck Oval back in Round Nine. Both of these teams will shape up a bit differently when they meet in today s second Semi-Final. In that Round Nine match, Frankston went in without Luke James, who has booted 12 goals in five games, Brian O Carroll, who has given them versatility through the middle and half back, Ryan Kitchen, one of the better ruckmen in the competition, Scott Foster, a hit-up player across half forward and Allan Williams, who can play on smalls and talls in defence. Rosebud go into today s game with four premiership players who didn t play the last time the sides met. Rhys Bancroft is an elite midfielder, Chris Zurek an uncompromising defender, Glenn Peterson, a lively forward, Matt Baker, the side s strongest defender and Anthony Pegg, who hasn t put a foot wrong in his eight games this season. Barring any injuries at training throughout the week, Frankston will go in with its strongest possible side. Unfortunately, a hamstring injury to Rosebud star Greg Bentley in the last quarter against Devon Meadows two weeks ago (one could ask what he was still doing on the ground in the last quarter when his side was 80 points up!) will probably see the competition s Rolls Royce sidelined for another week. Regardless of not having Bentley last week against Somerville in the Qualifying Final, the Buds were still able to get the job done. This should be a fascinating contest the Bombers deserve to be favourite, given their final ladder position and the fact they have already beaten Rosebud this season. The Bombers are also the new kids on the block and there is a weight of expectation that they will win the flag both internally and externally. How do the Bombers cope with that pressure, that excitement, that inexperience in finals matches? Personally, I believe the Bombers have weapons everywhere. Dale and Brett Sutton in the middle, along with Sam Fox, make a solid starting four with Ryan Kitchen in the ruck. Kitch does come-up against the best ruckman in the game today in Ben Dwyer. In attack, Zac Longham, the underrated Michael Maiorinio, Scott Foster and Luke James make-up both a potent and dangerous forward half and in defence, Ryan Marks-Logan, Muston, Jarryd Amalfi, Jay Page, Williams and O Carroll make-up an elite back six. Jason Kingsbury is one of the best stoppers in the game, Josh Francis and Tim Chapman go unnoticed but can be damaging and Corey Micari, who dominated in the ruck the last time the sides played, is comfortable at either end of the ground or in the ruck. They also have the best stats man in the caper in Ryan Chua Murdoch! It looks impressive for the Bombers. They do come-up against a hardened finals contender and the reigning premier. We saw last week that the Buds stepup to the plate when the business needs to be done. The Buds work for one-another, support one another, always do the team thing and make good decisions. Bancroft, along with Payne, Spooner and Dwyer, are superb in the pivot. Nick Boswell provides the run and drive from defence, although the Bombers got under his skin the last time they played, while Keegan Downie and Ben Shultz get the job done in attack. The thing that concerns me with Rosebud is the fact they dominated for three and half quarters last week against Somerville and almost lost the match. Had the Eagles been accurate in the last quarter, Rosebud would be playing in a First Semi today. The smaller Rye ground will suit Rosebud more than Bombers. They like it in close, like contested footy, stoppages and won t want the Bombers to get it on the outside. Regardless, the Bombers will get it on the outside enough to kick a winning score. 8 Footy Preview First Semi Final Somerville needs to lick its wounds and bounce back against Hastings at Devon Meadows on Sunday. These sides have met twice this season and both times the Eagles have been able to get the chocolates. The first time was an embarrassment for the Blues at home while the return clash less than a month ago at Somy was a great game of local footy. Hastings is highly likely to go into the game without star forward Colin McVeigh (reported for striking in the last quarter against Red Hill last week) and one of the comps premier ruckman, Josh Mulheron, who was helped from the field early in the third quarter last week and didn t return with what appeared to be an ankle or knee injury. Somerville on the other hand will get back underrated tough defender Kane McKenzie from a groin injury he is rarely beaten and usually is the obvious match-up for McVeigh. The Eagles can take a positive out of last week that some of their stars were well held and as a team they were dominated for more than three quarters, however, they got within a point in the last quarter and had they kicked straight, could have won it. Hastings was superb last week against Red Hill. They were disciplined, defended well, pressed extremely well and moved the ball in an exciting fashion and into attack. The Blues will fancy their chances. They had their opportunities against the Eagles last time but failed to capitalise. On paper, Somerville has more weapons and we saw what they can do in 15 minutes when they get a sniff I think they win, just! 11 Bendigo Community Bank Somerville Eagles Today we find ourselves at the last salon.we win, we march on to a preliminary final. Lose and the season is over! Last week the U19s proved how good they can be with a 27 point win over the Bombers. The boys took the foot off the pedal in the last quarter and failed to score but when they had 8 goal lead at 3/4 time, playing short and with 2 boys required for the reserves it was an excellent result. The boys now play Rosebud and with the previous clash called off because of Jake Haskett s injury it promises to be close affair. They will leave nothing to chance! The seniors last week were rolled again by their nemesis in Rosebud for the 9th time in a row. This time we came rattling home from 5 goals down to almost steal the game. We had 10 scoring shots to 2 in the last quarter and for a few minutes we were only 1 point down in the close finish. We shouldn t have been in this position as once again a slow start and some terrible skill errors and decisions cost us goals. It is never easy swallowing a result when you have more scoring shots than the opposition. We fight for another day, and we now must knock off Hastings to progress further! The reserves were wonderfully brave last Sunday and unfortunately their season is over. They had 2 players over 25 of age needed 2 players from the U19s to double up, they were up against an older, bigger bodied and had up to 7 recently played senior players. The boys were up over run in the last. Great effort boys! - Go Eagles Rosebud Buds Last week demonstrated finals footy is a different game! Teams don t drop their heads & fight to the bitter end, needing 6 goals to win in the last Qtr Sommy got within 1 point. But in big moments you need a Big Time player, someone to run the length of the ground, mark inside 50 & kick the goal to seal the deal! Big Time was again dominant all day along with Spoons in & under, Stevo wherever the ball was, Seb & Dan down back & Keegan in every forward contest. The U19s maintained the pressure on Red Hill all day & were never out of it a Grand Final appearance is not out of the question - but the home ground advantage & big open spaces made it tough for the visitors. Fletch was a threat all day, Jaycob, Lockie & Adam were a strong defence, Bronson & Joel were tireless in the mids. At Rye today the Development Squad can put their stamp on the finals against Red Hill, Luke has them primed, selection has been tough so we should see a winning effort first up on the paddock. The seniors will also be keen to show how far we ve come since our Round 9 clash with Frankston and to lock their place for the big one. The Unders take on Somerville at Devon on Sunday - a chance for them to rebound into a prelim final. Well done to our U17 netballers progressed to the GF after a convincing win over Dromana. Thanks to all our volunteers for putting on a great event for all competing clubs at Olympic Park on Sunday. Tickets on sale now for Presentation Night on 24 Italian Club. Go Buds! Club Notes Hastings Blues Today we play off in another cut throat final against our local Westernport rival in the Somerville Fnc, our club absolutely looks forward to testing ourselves against last year s runners up. Last Saturday in the Elimination final our club played a wonderful brand of contested football in fairly ordinary conditions that the boys revelled in to come away with a fabulous victory in front of a wellattended Hastings Crowd, the way the boys approach the contest was just first class. Today our boys will be approaching today s first semi-final with the same desire and intensity that is required for a cut throat final, our coaches have got the boys playing a terrific brand of team orientated football. We look forward to the opening bounce of today s game, we know it will be fierce contest for which every Hastings supporter will be there to cheer you on, if you play with the same passion & pride the result will take care of itself. Good luck today boys. Just quickly the club would like to thank all the players who didn t get a game last week step up and run water it was great to see. Upcoming Events: Presentation Night 22nd October at The Hastings Club Cost $50 Single Please book thru the club on Sponsors of the week The Hastings Club, Building Academy, Anytime Fitness Hastings, Roberts & Green Real Estate, Terry White Chemist Hastings, Secure Construct, Westernport Tractors, Hastings Mowers. #getonboardthebluestrain Sorrento Sharks While we obviously would have preferred to be entering this finals series with all three teams firing, the whole club is now behind our young-gun Under 19s who have been the shining light for the club throughout this season and are the only team left flying the Mighty Sharks flag. Our boys have played some fantastic football this year and have proven that they have the ability to go all the way this year. With that said, they come up against another brilliant bunch of young guns this week as they take on Red Hill. We have been battling against the Hillmen for the top spot the entire season and this week s match may well be a Grand Final preview. The Hillmen got the better of us in our first encounter this season, but our boys fought back well in the last round to beat Red Hill and take top spot on the ladder. That win was one of the best performances our boys have put in this year and should give them great confidence going into this week s match. The winner of this match gets a direct ticket to the big dance and with so much at stake it is sure to be a cracker! Let s hope our boys put their best foot forward this week and take the chocolates! Go Sharks!!! 11

13 Bendigo Community Bank Frankston Bombers Last Saturday saw the counting of Bombers Best & Fairest votes and what a night it turned out to be with a tie in both the firsts & seconds, you would have got great value odds on that at Ladbrokes! Congratulations to both Dale Sutton, sponsored by Karingal Optical & Sam Fox and their great seasons were recognized with being named joint B&F winners in the seniors. Evergreen Dan Myers & Cam O Neill could not be separated in the Reserves and we say well done to both of them on a great season of footy. The O Neill family are in a rich vein of form with Jamie recently bestowed the honor of Life Membership at Frankston Rovers for his outstanding work over many years with our junior football partner. Koby Villis was voted the thirds best & fairest and we congratulate Koby on an outstanding 2016 season. Sadly our under 19 s bowed out of the finals race last week and hopefully after the disappointment clears Brett, his assistants Dean & Al and all the young men who represented our club this year are proud of their finals achievement. For those eligible for the unders next year there will be a fresh injection of talent coming to join you and this will help you go one better in Others will be welcomed into our senior program and you will not get a better football education that with Beau and his assistants next year. The reserves got a wake up call last weekend, thankfully all the good work during the season earned a double chance and so let s make use of that chance this weekend. Our firsts proved themselves to be the top team in the home & away and now the time starts to show that we can do the same in the finals. Good luck to both of our Bomber teams and let s see two great wins! Don t forget the presentation night on Saturday 16/9 when we send the year off in style, see Batty for your tickets. Go Bombers Red Hill Hillmen It was a bitter sweet weekend of football for Red Hill last week. A hugely successful Saturday saw the U/19 s and Reserves progress one step further while a disappointing day on Sunday saw Hastings defeat the Senior Hillmen in an elimination final. The first final of 2016 was hotly contested in the U/19 s and Rosebud brought their A Game. Marchesani and Westle were sensational around the ground while up forward, MudFlap Magee and Jimmy G both kicked 2 to help the Hillmen to a 31pt win. Back to Back Hillmen finals saw the Reserves take on Frankston and we don t know how, but The Rabble did it again. It wasn t anything pretty and it certainly wasn t anything fancy but with Painy s Selley s Sealer, the boys moved one sloppy step closer. It was winner takes all last Sunday in a replay from last years elimination final, only this time Hastings were the better side. Disappointing to have such an abrupt finish to what was a great year for the senior boys but we certainly couldn t fault their endeavor on the day. The attention now turns to the U/19 s and Reserve hoping they can continue to climb the ladder! Club Notes Rye Demons Great win by the reserves last week against Somerville, at the 8 minute mark of the last qrt, 16 points down, it looked like we were heading back the club the drown our sorrows. Enter Daniel Schwind, Hagan Rice and Beau Gaudion who in the next 15 minutes dominated play and continually drove the ball forward where the Ryan Hawkins show begun. 4 goals in 10 minutes from Hawko, a couple form Wheels and Trav Doolan kicked the sealer, 27 point winners. Today though boys, 1 or 2 good quarters, won t get it done, we need 4 great quarters to keep the dream alive. Best wishes to our Under 17 Junior side, who are playing their Grand Final today at against Crib Point. Lets all head over the Hasting, after today s reserves game to support Mick and the boys and cheer home a win. We had 4 of the U/17 boys play senior football this year, which is a credit to Josh and Mick, hopefully the senior experience gained will help today. Presentation Nights, get your ticket booked with Beelie, (all tickets must be pre paid) Senior Football and Netball, Saturday September the 17th Portsea Hotel $65.00 per head. Under 19 Football Vote Count and Presentation Night Friday September the 9th at the club, $10 per head. A big thank you to all our fantastic volunteers at our great club, without your continued hard work off the ground, we could not have such a well run club, well done on another great year off the field. Lets go demons, continue the charge to the Grand Final. 13

21 I Can Feel It In My Fingers I feel it in my fingers I feel it in my toes oh oh oh yeah Finals are all around us And so the feeling grows And just like that the grass all of a sudden looks greener. The sun seems to have an added glow about it. And any sign of cloud coverage, let alone torrential rain, has disappeared in the blink of an eye. Somehow, someway it always happens like that. No matter how extreme the winter is (this year they even predicted snow in beautiful beachside Frankston) everything comes together the minute that finals feeling rolls around. You gave your promise to me, and I gave mine to you I need someone beside me in everything I do oh yes I do But with that comes the beauty of the football itself. There s nothing quite like finals footy. That thing you spend all year working so hard towards. And for some it s not just the past year. Sometimes it s the culmination of many years of hard slog at the lower end of the pecking order. You know I love you I always will My mind s made up by the way that I feel There s no beginning There ll be no end cause on my love you can depend... The Future Is Here The future can look like many things depending on which way it s assessed. The future can be nerving, exciting, undefined and downright scary all at the same time. That s a serious emotional wave there. Regularly we consider the future to be exactly there in the future. Something that we think about but never really consider approaching. Yet the future isn t just where we think it to be. It s actually here. Right here, right now. The next word of this article that you read is actually in the future from the word you re reading now. All of a sudden those nerving, exciting, scary feelings that the future causes are on top of you. That s right the future is here the future is now. And that s exactly what presents the SUA and the whole footballing community on the Peninsula this weekend. The young stars of the future will strut their stuff this weekend in an exciting finale of games down at Hastings on Sunday. This season has been an absolute blast in the juniors with many new and enthusiastic faces taking up the challenge of learning and developing their whistle blowing and decision making in MPJFL footy. And credit must go to their application as many have also made the step into the senior ranks. With the changing of the guard in the senior ranks the sniffs of opportunity were too hard to ignore. However, the enthusiasm surrounding the SUA junior program would not be possible with the unwavering commitment from first year Junior Coordinator Scott Gathercole and the Rye Football Club. Scott came in with experience in coaching Auskick down the Peninsula and his ability to get the best out of our young future stars has been evident. The relationship developed with the Rye Football Club has enabled the SUA to set up a junior base at Rye to further expand our demographic. And while we regularly get caught up in the competitive wave of footy it is always nice to step back and see the lighter more sentimental side. 25 Bendigo Community Bank Netball Preview Netball Preview Preliminary Finals Week 2 of finals action in the Nepean FNL Netball. A fantastic first week was held down at Rosebud, with great contests in all grades made it exciting to watch. We have had 4 teams progress on to the Grand Finals next week at Tyabb, so well done to Crib Point, Devon Meadows and Rosebud on making the biggest game of the year. This week brings about another opportunity to make the Grand Final. Let s look across the four grades for the games being contested today. A Grade Tyabb v Somerville Last time they met: R13 - Tyabb 41 Def Somerville 20 The Yabbies would have gone into last week s game against Crib Point very confident. Unfortunately it just wasn t meant to be with Tyabb going down by 4 points. On the flip side Somerville had a 4 point win over Devon Meadows in a tough game. The Eagles certainly did well to hold off the Panthers. This week will be an interesting game as last time they met in round 13 Tyabb had a 21 point win. No doubt with a spot in the Grand Final on the line anything can happen. C Grade Crib Point v Somerville Last time they met: R16 Crib Point 22 Drew Somerville 22 Could you ask for a better match up! These sides only played each other 2 weeks ago, for the game to end in a draw. What a game to have before the Grand Final. Their won t be too much separating either side and the victor will be the side who wants it more on the day, so the girl better turn up to play! U17 Grade Dromana v Sorrento Last time they met: R12 Dromana 23 Def Sorrento 14 Dromana will be coming out all guns blazing this week against Sorrento. The Tigers weren t at their best last week when they went down to Rosebud by 15 points. Sorrento continued their good form and defeated Red Hill by 16 points, and will give themselves a real shot of taking W. It will be a big test for the Sharks and they will need to be at their best to knock off the Tigers, coming off a big loss. B Grade Somerville v Frankston Last time they met: R2 Somerville 49 Def Frankston 32 What a game between Somerville and Devon Meadows last week. Both side brought their A games and it was a delight to watch. If this were to be the Grand Final match it will be a cracking game. Frankston were just too strong for Crib Point last week and sent a reminder to their Eagles and Panther friends that they are not to be forgotten. A brilliant display of netball from the Bombshells will see them have that chance of playing on Grand Final day. Last time these two sides met it was way back in round 2, so hard to judge on who will take this one out. BAYSIDE 126 Dandenong Road, Frankston Ph:

26 Netball Notes Dromana Tigers Today sees us up against Sorrento, after a dissapointing loss last weekend (Sunday not Saturday) against Rosebud the girls will be eager to redemm themselves. With the girls been put through their paces at training with no other distractions this week the girls should come out on top. This team has worked hard all year to finish minor premiers and deserve to make the Grand Final next week. It hasn t been without injuries though with both strong Defenders out due to serious injury...we wish both Matilda and Caitlin a speedy recovery. GO TIGERS! Frankston Bombshells When the oppositions mascot is laying lifeless roadside on the way to your game you have a feeling it may be a good omen. Never meaning to wish ill to any animal a little smirk creeps across our faces. When not one ball is dropped in the warm up, our resident nurse manages to get out of work and we win the toss for the first time in weeks it feels like things are coming up Milhouse. When you take a 12-3 lead into ¼ time you think this may our day. Perhaps we put the cue back in the rack a bit early; only managing to build a 16 goal half time lead into 17 goals at full time but I think we ll take that. At the risk of gushing to the point of nauseam it was a phenomenal team effort. A cohesive all court defensive effort that was stronger than any prescription pain killer. Cath had a vice-like grip on that netball and only when it fell through that net was she happy coincidently it happened 36 times, so she was very happy indeed. Polly, Blair and Sezzy were feeding our goalers like they were starving with so much ball coming fast into that third the defenders didn t have time to think. And again strong defence down the whole court meant Bev gobbled up so many intercepts we lost count. So next time Black Eyed Peas ask where is the love? I think you ll find it at Bombshells, with the help from an amazing supporter base and an exceptional coach this team may even go a step further. Who knows maybe we ll see an unfortunate Eagle on the highway to Rye. #why not #cant hurt Bendigo Community Bank Somerville Eagles It was an exciting day of netball last weekend down at Rosebud. A big congratulations to all 3 teams, making the finals is a huge achievement and you should all be so proud of your efforts. The C girls were yet to beat Pearcedale so they knew that it was going to be a tough game. The girls fought hard and worked together beautifully to come away with a massive win in the elimination final! It was so great to see everything they had learnt during the season being practiced out on the court. The B girls finished top of the table and had something to prove. Unfortunately they couldn t convert and the Devon Girls were too strong on the day, ending the game with a 1-point loss. The A girls hadn t made finals in years, always finishing 5th. They had a huge win against Devon and showed everyone that they deserved to be in the finals. This round all 3 teams are playing for a spot in the Grand Final. The C girls will face Crib Point, the B girls Frankston and the A girls will fight for a spot against Tyabb. Once again, all teams should be so proud of their efforts! Good luck to our seniors football team and the under 19s who play tomorrow down at Devon Meadows. A reminder that the Eagle presentation night is on the 16th of September. Tickets are selling fast so make sure you get in quick! GO EAGLES!!!! Crib Point Magpies C grade had an amazing game and rallied all together against an undefeated side, were even in front at half time but ultimately went down by 4. Defenders and goalers took a little bit to find their rhythm but were in check for the rest of the game! Devon were very strong and experienced and just over took us. Nevertheless our girls have a second chance and take on Somerville this week in a elimination final! Lets hope our girls can rally for a spot in the Grand Final! B grade played in an elimination final for a spot in the preliminary against Frankston who were very strong last time we played them so it was a big ask for our girls. Frankston got the jump on us and we were playing catch up for the rest of the game. Last quarter was amazing though, the quarter score was a draw and our girls played their heart out! Unfortunately that is the season over for B grade but they should be proud of their efforts! The Peninsula Club Bar and Restaurant The Peninsula Club is located one street back from the Dromana foreshore on the corner of Gibson & Noel Streets in Dromana, Victoria Phone:

27 Bendigo Community Bank A grade had an amazing game against Tyabb right from the start! Tyabb got the early jump and our girls trailed all game giving their all until the last quarter with two minutes left and we ended the game in a draw! With emotions running high it was time on but our girls got the job done winning in by 4! Straight into the grand final goes our A grade and one happy coach! Major shout out to all of our supporters who came and watched! We ve never felt so proud to be apart of such a great club! Only one game this week, lets hope our C grade can join A grade in the Final! Tyabb Yabbies We all knew that last week s game against Crib Point was going to come down to the wire and it certainly did. Up by 4 goals at one stage we had every chance to take the win but allowed silly errors to creep into our game as the pressure built. The lead was pulled back to one and by the final siren scores were level. Into extra time we weren t able to keep our composure and Crib Point were, seeing them take the win by 4 goals. Today we take on Somerville and will certainly come out firing and ready to put together 4 full and solid quarters, making sure we take good form into next week s Grand Final. Best of luck to all Yabbies out on court today! NIP! NIP! Netball Notes Sorrento Sharks A FANTASTIC WIN TO OUR U17 s against a strong Red Hill 32 to 16. After loosing to RH only the week before the girls were a bit nervous however they soon put that to rest. They were committed from the first whistle and although RH kept up a content challenge all game the girls played really well to come away with a win. The Netball players would like to thank all those who have supported us this year especially the amazing group of sponsors who came aboard this year. To our wonderful coaches Vicki Zampatti, Athena Hallahan Emma Ring, Ash Gladman, Kathleen Clarke & Sue Roper (fitness) who have encouraged & guided us. To the scorers & timekeepers who keep things in order. An ENORMOUS thank you to all those people who bought raffle tickets sometimes at every home game. Without the funds raised we would not be able to play. To our management committee David & Anne-Marie Croad, Katy Watts, Jackie Voigt, Kerri Gladman and Alison Phillips - they organise the umpires, register us, liaise with the league, comply with Netball Vic & generally do what is required to keep things working. Thank you to the SFNC for all their support. Thank you our umpires Tori & Charlie. Thank you to all the parents & partners who get the players to training, games & cheer us on. Finally a BIG thank you to all the players for helping set up/pack up home games, volunteering to score & sell raffle tickets. But mostly congratulations to the wonderful young woman who have an incredible season.
