This is the second time I ve been so honored, as I was elected HCC President in That was a banner year for me as I also won the Member Guest Golf Tournament with my brother but most importantly married Stacey Scoggins in July on this property at our old Clubhouse. Stacey and I live here in Palm Valley and like many of you, the HCC plays an integral part in our lives. I am an Optometrist and owner of the Harlingen Eye Clinic and work full time. IN MEMORIAM Elizabeth Keeter Dr. Charles Crosthwait Back by popular request. Music and songs by Ann Larsen & Carol Fugit. In the past, I was elected to three terms as a Harlingen City Commissioner and learned how to manage my time very quickly during those eight years and have no doubt that will come in handy in Harlingen Country Club faces many of the same challenges as 2005 but I see many more opportunities for success in our future based upon the enthusiastic support of our current membership. Three of my goals for 2019 are: 1) Increase our membership by 50 net new members. This increase will provide enough dues income to put HCC in a financial position to address many capital and infrastructure needs while at the same time continue to pay down our debt. 2) I plan to establish a committee to do a feasibility study for the building of a banquet facility to house people for functions like wedding receptions, birthday parties, Quinceañeros etc. for both members as well as member sponsored events. The revenue generated from such a facility will pay for the cost of the building as well as further assist in paying down the debt owed on our clubhouse. I have asked Board member, Jeff Scoggins, who has expertise in this area, to chair this committee to study the possibility of such a structure and he has agreed to serve. 3) The year marks the 50th year that Harlingen Country Club has sat at this site. It seems only fitting that we should all celebrate this milestone. I have asked newly elected Board member, Kay Conly, to chair a 50th Anniversary Committee charged with having multiple events throughout the year celebrating our anniversary. I anticipate having a large dinner/dance party for all members at the later part of the year to cap off our Golden Anniversary celebration. I have asked for the assistance of Bobby Jones Links in providing a logo which highlights our club and 50 years at this site. They have provided one and I have paid for a flag to fly over our club during the year. Look for it on the flagpole soon. Additionally, we will have 18 pin flags to be placed on the greens of our golf course. We currently have logoed golf balls for purchase in the pro shop and other merchandise will soon be available. Additionally, HCC member Matt Gorges has agreed to provide some historical perspective regarding our Club in the Par Four Newsletter highlighting the past 50 years of the Harlingen Country Club in Palm Valley.

4 Our ery Turf Nurs Our Board had three member s term end this year and I would like to recognize them for their tremendous contribution to the well being of HCC. Sue Shields and Dan Strickland have provided leadership in many areas not the least of which is fundraising both privately and publicly and, as all good leaders do, they lead by example. Although their term has ended, I am confident that these two will continue to work to make our Club better! Craig Lonon leaves the Board after several years as the Club s leader. No one has spent more time (and a lot of money I might add) toward seeing that our Club survive through some very trying times. Craig stepped forward when our Club was without a General Manager and performed those duties as well. We are indeed very fortunate to have someone with his skill set at the helm these past few years. Craig has asked to continue as an ex-officio member of the Board and serve on the Finance Committee and assist with the renegotiation of the Club s note to the bank. I am pleased to accept his desire to continue in these Refer-a-Friend & Save! Eligible Members dues will be reduced to $297 (Full Golf ) when they refer one new Full Golf Member. Full Golf Members will begin receiving a credit in the amount of the new Member s monthly dues after referring their second new member. Junior Executive and Regular Members will receive a dues credit for each new Member referred in the amount of the new Member s monthly dues. Contact Estella in Membership for full details at estella@harlingencc.com. capacities. Please take some time to thank each of these three individuals who have done nothing but work hard in order that you may enjoy your time at the HCC. We welcome three new members to our Board of Directors. Kay Conly, Brad Shields and Marc Saldana bring a wealth of knowledge and experience and I look n Follow the 90 degree rule when driving the golf carts and avoid the brown and worn areas. This time of year, that will greatly help the condition of the course. forward to their participation in I greatly look forward to 2019 at our Club and hope that you do as well. Lets make it a year to remember! See you ON THE Dr. Jim Rowe, President THIRD FRIDAY BRIDGE RESULTS 1st Place: Peggy Reeves 2nd Place: Darlene Gill 3rd Place: Coralie Somers Bingo: Darlene Gill BRIDGE PARTY Men and women needed to play Bridge Party. No pressure, just fun times. For information, please call Peggy Reeves at GOLF NEWS FROM THE PRO n Remember to always repair your ball marks on the green and fill your divots in the fairway. n Life Begins at 40 Golf Tournament will start on February 25-March 2. Look for separate blasts and notifications about golf course availability during that week. As in previous years, I will also try and secure courtesies from other area golf courses for those members not playing in this event. GREENS! The course will be open to membership on Monday, February 25 since that is the practice round for Life Begins at 40. Liz Richardson, Head Golf Professional COURSE UPDATE December and January have not been terribly cold, but we are still playing catch up with November weather. As you will notice we are doing quite a bit of transplanting on the greens. We removed turf from our nursery off of #2 tee and then installed it in damaged areas on the course. I am hoping that by the end of February to have greens with the turf quality that you associate with HCC. I am showing you pictures of the

5 nursery where sod has been removed and actual greens where that same turf has been installed. We are also making our way around the golf course doing trim work on the trees that line fairways. By raising the canopy, we accomplish several things. A golfer finds it easier to advance his or her ball if they have some room to work with under a tree. Also, our equipment has room to maneuver while we mow, as well the irrigation system works better if the stream is allowed to make it s proper arc. Sunlight can begin to penetrate as well, creating a more favorable environment for turf. I hope you all find the conditions of the golf course to your liking and you want to come visit us often.
