4 Greens & Grounds Now that Spring has sprung, I am very excited about the 2018 golf season for many reasons. The first is I have a great assistant in Jeffrey Swanson. Jeff does an amazing job with all the tasks he is given and running the crew on a daily basis. Secondly, I have a great crew, led by our foreman Jose Rivera. Jose has been with Great River since construction back in The third reason is I have a great mechanic in Phil Pasmeg. Phil has been with us since 2008 and is responsible for our fleet of mowers and utility vehicles. Finally, we have had a very productive winter. From tree trimming to building new walls on #15 tees to installing new gardens, the G&G team has set us up for a great spring. I could not be prouder of all the work that has been done. As you play your first few rounds of the season, I hope you see all the improvements that have been made. 5 Greens & Grounds The Greens Committee recently concluded its meeting and one of the big topics of discussion was bunkers. Even though we are still in the planning stages of a full renovation there is still some work that can be done. One project that was recommended by Tom Fazio II was the removal of #10 s front right bunker. This bunker would be filled in and finished to look very similar to the fairway bunkers on #1. This would in no way make for an easy shot, but it would maintain the intended balance by leaving both bunkers front left and back right. The work will be completed in-house by the G&G staff sometime this spring. 6 Monty s River Grille Dear Members, On behalf of our entire F&B Team, we are all excited about having you back at Great River and Monty s Restaurant and Grille. The Spring season will be an exhilarating one with the opening of the Golf Season and several initiatives in F&B. We will be promoting our Mexican Cinco de Mayo Celebration on Saturday, May 5th. It will be an authentic three course meal for $24.95 along with margarita and tequila specials. We are also offering our Mother s Day Brunch on Sunday, May 13th. 13 The Shop Corner Dear Members, The entire Golf Shop Staff is extremely excited for the golf season ahead and I am sure you are as well. We are confident that once the weather breaks we will be in for an incredible year of golf. The shop is fully stocked with all the latest products for We have everything you need to look your best, play your best and feel your best on the course. Golf should be an enjoyable escape. The game can be hard enough, do whatever you can to make it easier and more enjoyable. You walk a lot of steps in your golf shoes, you spend a lot of time in your golf apparel and you make a lot of swings with your golf glove. If your shoes are worn out, your shirts have seen better days and your glove has a hole in it or has lost that soft, supple feel, now is the time to replace them. Stop by the shop and check out all the new offerings from FootJoy, johnnie-o, Travis Mathew, Under Armour and Vineyard Vines. Everyone tees off, and then the best shot is picked. Everyone plays their own ball into the hole. The best score gross and net is recorded. Pro Shop does pairings based on Handicap Index. Prizes: 1st Gross and 1st Net Team Sign-Up Deadline: Field is Full Food and Beverage: Breakfast and Lunch at the Member s Grill Room. 15 Tom Rosati s Tips Save Your Back This Year The secret to preventing back injuries is to have less bend and side bend during the swing. I ve done a comparison of Tiger Woods and Ernie Els from In figure 3 Ernie has much less side bend just past impact than Woods. And in figure 4 Tiger has much more backwards bend in the follow through position than Ernie. These two positions that Woods gets into puts a lot of pressure on Figure 1 Figure 2 the spine, especially L4 and L5. I should know because this a move that has plagued me for years and now I m paying for it with a herniated disc! Ernie has repeated his swing for years without much injury and he looks the same now as he did 20 years ago. To start training a back-saving swing, you must first load on your right side in the backswing as in figure 1. In this position Ernie works behind the ball so the spine is tilted away from the ball, not towards the ball which creates the wrong side bend and pressure on the back. This is commonly known as the dreaded reverse pivot (see figure 2). From Figure 3 the proper position you can push off your right side and rotate around your left side so that you finish with less side bend and backward bend like Ernie in figures 3 and 4. One of the keys is to finish your swing with the right shoulder over your left foot. This eliminates any backward bend like Ernie in figure 4. So, before you start the season come see me and we ll identify these flaws, save your back and at the same time help you hit it a lot more solid. Play well! Tom Figure 4 THE RIVER - PAGE 15

16 Social Media Corner As the weather gets warmer, activity is going to pick up at the club. We are excited to have all of you back and begin hosting our Spring events. We have a lot of outings and special events and have recently jumped right into wedding season! We had the pleasure of hosting one of our member s daughter s weddings on-site as the first wedding of the year and what a beautiful day it was! It was the perfect way to kick off this Spring season. Now that the golf season has begun, we want you all to make sure you check our social media sites and Clubster for the Daily Activity Sheet. 17 Event Hosting Great River s official wedding season is off to a great start! We welcomed Spring with the marriage celebration of Ashley & Doug we couldn t be happier for them! April will be filled with many special events: showers, weddings and corporate meetings. We look forward to welcoming brides & grooms and their families, babies tobe and corporate clients.
