2 News from the Gate GENERAL MANAGER S CORNER May is here and that means summer is not far behind. We are excited about the kids ending the school year, and our p o o l s Jeff Keeler, CMAA, PGA, USPTA G r a n d General Manager O p e n i n g (5/4). We hope to see everyone enjoying the water soon. I would like to discuss two subjects: the 15% automatic gratuity and dog walking on the golf course. I know many members are confused about the 15% gratuity seen on the food & beverage tickets. The question I am most often asked is Who gets the 15%, and should I leave a tip? The answer is this: the 15% does not go the service staff, that 15% is used to offset fees associated with running a Country Club Food & Beverage Operation, including salaries, equipment, supplementing uniform costs, and overall overhead. We do pay our servers more than typical restaurants pay their staff, but that does not mean you should not add a tip. If you have a good experience I would recommend adding 5-10% to the total of the bill. That is just a recommendation, it is completely up to you. I hope this helps everyone to better understand where the 15% goes. Onto our second topic: Dog walking on the golf course. We have all seen people walking their dogs on the golf course. It is obviously a beautiful and tranquil place to take a walk with our canine friends. But what we ask is please do your best to stay on or as near as possible to the cart paths, please pick up after your dog and refrain from being on the course during normal golf times. Walking your dog during play does affect the players and we would truly hate to see anyone get hit by a golf ball. Hope to see you back at the club soon. Best Regards, Jeff EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT This month we feature Albert Jones, Clubhouse Maintenance. Mr. Albert has been with us for 7 years, helping keep our clubhouse beautiful throughout the years. Mr. Albert was born and raised here in Albany, and says his favorite hobbies are bowling, and talking on his radio. Mr. Albert is our go-to guy for any repairs needed around the club, he can do it all! You will see his handiwork at our summer pool opening, where he sought to recreate a Caribbean-style oasis, with freshly-painted pools and new seating outside for our members. If offered a fully-paid vacation anywhere in the world, Mr. Albert said he would want to visit Buffalo, New York; which is where his daughter and grandchildren currently live. Say hello to Albert when you see him around the club! Feel free to stop in the kitchen or call for any questions or concerns! Bon appetit! Jason Hedrick, Executive Chef Upcoming Events on the Court DCC vs. Stonebridge Tennis Mixer Friday, May 10 th 6:30p-8:30p Cost: $15/person (inc. pizza, beer, & wine) To register for this event, call the Tennis Shop at Keys To a Winning Forehand 1. Keep your eye on the ball: This may seem like a novice tip but how can you expect to hit what you can t see? Too many times, the ball takes a weird hop off the court and you end up with a mishit. If you want to hit a consistently good forehand you have to make sure to watch the ball. 2. Use your legs: In tennis, your forehand depends on more than one arm to create velocity. If you bend at the knees before you strike the ball, you can push up during contact to add extra power. 3. Use topspin: With the use of topspin, you can hit your forehand harder and increase your chance of getting the ball in. 4. Rotate your shoulders: The backswing in preparation of a forehand should be made by the shoulders. Get your shoulders back as soon as possible and rotate the upper body as you swing through the ball. 5. Follow through: The follow through is one of the most important parts of the modern forehand. Make sure you fully swing through the ball and end high, preferably about chin high, and to the left of the body. If you follow these tips, you should be well on your way to a better, stronger forehand. See you at the courts!! Hope to see everyone at the tennis courts! 4 News from the Turf Preparing the #15 fairway the rainy morning of the GSGA 4-Ball Tournament. Preparing the #15 fairway the rainy morning of the GSGA 4-Ball Tournament. Golf Course Maintenance The busy season has arrived for the golf course maintenance staff. Hopefully the spring temperatures do not turn into summer temperatures too quickly, although it seems to be coming sooner than we all want. We have begun lowering our mowing heights on the greens, and will continue to do so through member guest. We will also be double cutting and rolling the greens a few days a week to improve the playing surface. I would like to thank the Men s Golf Association for providing some of the funds needed to purchase 2 new greens rollers. The maintenance staff has not had suitable rollers for our greens in the recent past. But now with these new rollers, we will be able to provide smoother, firmer, and faster putting surfaces. The staff is also starting to mow all other areas of the golf course on more of a routine basis. The tees, fairways, and rough are growing and will become more consistent in height and density in the coming weeks. A bulk fertilizer application will be completed early this month on the entire golf course and clubhouse grounds. We are applying herbicides throughout the golf course and grounds to control many different types of weeds. With the wet winter and spring, not only do the trees and turf enjoy the extra water, but weed seeds laying in the soil do as well. We continue pruning trees along #3 #4, #5, to allow more sunlight to reach the turf. We will be planting sod on the mounds on #13 this month, and will also be landscaping the mounds next to #9 tee. Twenty long leaf pine trees will be planted in strategic areas along the golf course. We have received some donations for the purchase of these trees, and they are greatly appreciated. If there are any other members that would like to help with the purchase of pine trees, please talk to Ed in the pro shop. Thanks for the support! See you on the course, Mark Mitchell Superintendent of Grounds Your Help in Beautification! Richard Rhodes 7 years on golf course maintenance staff. Born and raised in Albany, GA. Before Doublegate, Richard was a superintendent in Atlanta and in Blufton, SC. He also worked on courses in Tucker, Woodstock, and Acworth. Richard has an Associate s Degree from Darton College in Political Science. In his free time, Richard enjoys golf, college football, and church. Golfers, say hello to Richard when you see him working out on the golf course. Everyone is asked to assist to make the course more beautiful by filling divots, repairing ball makes, and picking up tees and cigarette butts. By rounds played, the alphabet has been divided and assigned two holes to keep in tip-top shape. Please continue to repair and pick-up your own doing but take special pride in the holes assigned to you. 5 News from the Green MGA Birdies & Beer Winners! 1st David Blitch & Clark Stallings 2nd Davis King & Steve Mathews This was the first of several monthly events of the year. Please mark your calendar for our next event on 5/16 at 5:30pm. Blue Hole Winner! A long journey beginning in October 2012 concluded this April Ben Benford won the Blue Hole Match Play Championship. Each player has been successful in their 5 previous matches Clay Kile fired up to take his 1st Doublegate golf title. Ben was on his game using past experience of winning in the Doublegate Club Championships, and the Albany City Championship to prevail over Clay 3 and 2. Congratulations to Mr. Ben Benford! Doublegate Golf Etiquette 1. No mulligans on #1 or #10 if a group is waiting 2. Summer Rules (No improving lie) 3. Fivesome must all ride 4. Fill all divots 5. Repair your ball mark plus one more 6. Rake the bunker as you leave 7. If a group is waiting, and your group has a full open in front, please step aside and wave the group through. A group with fewer players than your group generally will play faster if you allow them to play through. MEMBER-GUEST Schedule of Events Two New Signs On #1 tee are two new signs: No Mulligans Summer Rules The USGA does not recognize handicaps when mulligans are used and you improve your lie. First, improvement will be the condition of the 1st tee with only half the number of shots hit. Second, your ball striking ability will greatly improve thus lowering your score by playing the ball as you find it. Play will also speed up. P. 5
