1 THE Volume 33 Issue 7 July 2018
2 Dear Doublegate Member, I am excited that summer has arrived as our activity levels remain robust in all areas. Our families are taking advantage of summer camps, tennis camps, golf clinics and of course the swimming pool. The Club is doing well financially year to date as we are ahead of budget and ahead of last year in both revenue and profitability. The membership totals remain consistent with the last two years but with more member participation. The department heads and entire staff did an outstanding job with our Annual Men s Member Guest event on Memorial Day weekend. I have received numerous letters, phone calls, s and one on one conversations from members and guests all positive stating how much they enjoyed the week s events. It is rewarding to hear how much the event really means to our membership. A special thanks to Heath Fountain and Tommy Clark from Planters First Bank for their generous support. I would like to thank one of our passionate, dedicated members who generously paid for the new carpet in the Sports Lounge and hallway to the locker rooms. WOW! This individual will remain anonymous as requested. My sincere gratitude to you. Thank You! Our focus will remain on building our current membership levels and retaining our current members with membership satisfaction. The Club is always looking for ways to improve. If you have a thought, idea or constructive criticism my office is always open and my phone is always on so please do not hesitate to call I look forward to seeing you at the Club soon, Thank you, Danny Souza General Manager Congratulations to our 2018 Member-Guest winners! Robert Lyons & Dr. Ken Durham. We would like to thank PFB for being our title sponsor for our Annual Member-Guest Invitational. Heath Fountain, CEO and Tommy Clark, Albany Market President. 4 Shots of the Month: Virgina Burkhart, JW Willis, John Holman and Larry Comer all shot their age! Member Guest Results: The 2018 Member Guest event was won by the team of Dr. Ken Durham and his guest Robert Lyons. After dodging the weather for 2 ½ days the 16 flight winners, the 16 second place flight winners, the team with the most points not otherwise in, the team with the most points for rounds 2 & 4 not otherwise in and the team with the most points for Sundays round not otherwise in all qualified for the shootout. This year s shoot-out was modified to ensure completion before more weather set in. We eliminated 5 teams on the first of 5 starting locations then eliminated 1 team on the next hole. The 5 final teams of Dr. Ken Durham & Robert Lyons, John Kirbo & Will Kilpatrick, David Blitch & Denver Davis, Chandler Lee & Brian Ivey and Brian Miller & Todd Kegler all made the shoot-out and finished in order. congratulations Dr. Ken Durham & Robet Lyons The summer is in full swing and the course is thriving as we have done a ton of work! Cultural practices are a necessity for long term health of the course. No one likes when we aerify the greens except me. The benefits are numerous; drainage & ventilation is the name of the game in relation to the greens. We have the greens grown back in from aerification. The fairways, tees, and collars have been aerified as well. This relieves compaction and helps with drainage. The holes let us put amendments directly into the soil as well. There is a gas exchange that occurs when pulling the plugs out, carbon dioxide is released and oxygen is allowed into the root zone. The weather has been pretty good to us; the humidity and temps have been just in the right zone for the Bermuda to really grow well. The weak areas we have broken up and tried to encourage growth. The greens need verticutting and sand more often during the growing period. I love this because we can be more aggressive to the turf and reap the benefits in the future. We are working on some trees and spraying for Pine Beatles. I will add some lighting protection to some of the important trees this month. The crew will continue to hone the course to be in the best shape consistently and I am encouraged by the dedication this crew has shown through the hot long hours this year. Best Regards, Matthew Ayer, Golf Course Superintendent Upcoming Golf Events Golf Attire at the Club: Proper golf attire must be worn at all times while playing golf and while on the driving range. 6 Dear Doublegate Members, This past June was a memorable Summer month at Doublegate. The tennis and swim camp were busy for our young children. They enjoyed tennis related arts and crafts, swimming, and lots of tennis fun. Top juniors also enjoyed traveling to Rome, Macon, and Columbus for some of Georgia s biggest tournaments of the year. Lastly, Tuesday night quads has proven to be a popular time for our ladies who enjoy playing. July always marks the time for the Junior Team Tennis State Championships. This year Doublegate will attend with more teams than in any past years. 4 teams total and over 35 of our players will make the trip to compete in Macon GA. The kids always have a great time playing tennis, hanging out with their teams, and spending a weekend playing tennis. We will be a few days from leaving by the time you read this. Good luck to all our juniors! We hope to see you out on the courts this Summer. We have plenty of time left if you are looking to play a little. Programming is in place for early mornings and late evenings. Join us for some Summer fun on the courts!
